    A flat plate airfoil is inherently stable in pitch. It does not need a vent to produce down wash. For moderate aspect rations of around 4 to 6, the CG can be 1/4 to 1/3 chord. The further forward CG will fly farther and faster. The farther aft CG will descend more slowly. For maximum duration, you want to fly at the attack angle that gives minimum sink. You can use a little dihedral. Fin is not necessary on a glider, might be needed with a prop up front.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  2 года назад +1

      I need to try one without the vent. It's a lot more efficient with the vent though.

    Hey man that's pretty cool. When I was little I loved going to the hobby shop, my parents would spoil me with airplane and glider kits to keep me occupied. It's alotta fun. Whenever I would break them I would keep all the parts and would then build a Frankenstein plane made up up of all the diff models. It always made me feel accomplished when one would fly perfect great memories, maybe ill get to relive it when I have kids one day. The duration of that flight is bonkers dude haha cool build

    Sorry to ask such an unrelated question, but what is the name of the model that wing on the top rack belongs to at 2:28?? I was recently given one to re-cover and make fly with absolutely no information on it..

    I have an ultra light weight system from a Plantranco Carbon Butterfly that has demised. Going to try to upsize this and fly outdoors. Cover with Clingwrap. Great video as usual and nice to have such a good space to fly indoors.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  2 года назад

      If you can get some veggie bags, those are lighter and conform better to the airfoil so it'll fly better. This would make a really, really nice rc slow flier. If you set it up with elevons with plenty of travel, it'll be fully aerobatic and still have excellent docile handling.

    Hi.
    Why this propeller has such large diameter? Is it for rpm regulation.?( Im newbie)

  • @aeromodeller1
    @aeromodeller1 2 года назад

    The cambered foreplane probably does not add anything to this plane. Its trailing edge is not functioning as a trailing edge. The compound airfoil is messing up the airflow. It would be interesting to see what would happen with a perfectly flat square.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  2 года назад +1

      Most planks use undercamber in the first half of the airfoil and reflex in the rear third. Works for them. Bigger is it's a full gram overweight and has a very suboptimal prop. And it's floppy so the tips are washing in badly. All stuff that can be fixed but it still wouldn't be competitive. It's fun though and that's all I care about.

    What is the wing covering made of?
    I remember reading for some planes its a film mix of cellulose that you have to make yourself. But I don't think that's what's on the square deal is it?

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  2 года назад +1

      Yeah you're thinking of microfilm...a truly challenging material to use. This plane is covered with 1.4um mylar, which isn't particularly thin but is the perfect weight for this plane.

    Another offbeat model on my bucket list. Nice easy flyer.
    Does the model turn due to prop torque or is there a rudder / stab offset?

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  Год назад +1

      In indoor models with the twisting loads on the motorstick being transmitted into the wing, it's always best to fly to the left. Torque of course pulls the plane naturally to the left, but I did add small amounts of left rudder and left thrust to get the desired turn radius.

      I could, but it would be pretty boring. It's about the simplest indoor plane you can build. Just build it to the original plans in the description and it'll fly, either with a big balsa prop or even a small plastic one.
