Almost 45 years later. a 1970s classic and a holiday release. Richard Donner and many others who are no longer with us gave so much to make this possible. After this one, Batman was the next up and it took 10 years to develop. Even if Batman became the bigger franchise, It was Superman The Movie who broke the mold for superhero films and still is held to it's golden standard.
I remember the commercial for Superman. It showed the crystal of Superman S. The voice over said, "Superman the movie! You will believe a man can fly." That was it. No clips or scenes or anything. This showed on the TV for a week before the release. I wanted to see this film so badly it was all I could think about.
Showing my age but I remember when we were on a school trip to see The Wiz there was a trailer didn’t show a lot……I kept thinking about Superman when I was home I couldn’t wait to see it
CLASSIC!!! If you watch the documentary about making this movie they had literally stop filming and figure out how to do certain shots and effects because the technology didn't exist back then so they literally had to come up with it themselves
I was 6 in '77, I do t remember the commercials...but my mom took me to see it and I was more blown away that STAR WARS, SUPERMAN was an experience you just had to be in the theater to feel...nothing like it, now we get superhero shit everyweek...but back then to the eyes of a 6yr old...I just dont know how to explain it.
I know how you feel…I remember that moment in the movie theatre it was packed and the opening credits starting with the three villains being judged and sent to the phantom zone was amazing
That film had a warm, magical quality to it. There have been tons of superhero movies some are great and some horrible but this one was was special. I loved Man of Steel, flaws and all but it doesn't have that same something like Donner's Superman.
I didn't watch this movie until after watching Man of Depression. Between 78' and reading Kingdom Come they made me love and appreciate the character more. Superman and Lois does a great job embracing the classical while modernizing too. Looking forward to what Gunn does with his Superman.
This video went off the rails the moment they mentioned Richard Pryor. I'm still waiting for them to talk about the hype surrounding Superman The Movie.
This film is still watchable. No other Superman film is as watched as this one and is loved as this one. Richard Donner created some masterpieces in the '70s with the omen and Superman and then in the 80s he came out with lethal weapon. Wow
What Martin was referring to was Brando told Richard Donner two strange things: he could either play it as a green suitcase or a bagel. When I read that I was like, wtf? Very bizarre.
The most amazing thing about Superman the movie to me is the fact that it came out at a time where absolutely zero people gave a single shit about comic books or superheroes and that despite that it's extremely faithful to what Superman was like in the comics at the time. The people making it could have just as easily been like "Krypton? What's that homo shit? Metropolis? Daily Planet? Red cape? No no, we aren't doing any that weird shit. Set it in New York and make him a cop" and then proceeded to snort a mountain of coke, but the character was so loved and iconic even back then that they just had to put everything into it and because of that it's considered one of the greatest movies of all time, and not just superhero movie but greatest movie period.
I wasn't horrified by that scene as a kid. I knew he'd make it out of there because he's Superman. Also, you have to know that Evil Superman was probably using his x-ray vision to watch Clark getting crushed inside the machine
Just like the character in the comics the film basically threw the character into the mainstream and created the intrest for superhero content outside of comics. We prob wouldnt have no x men spider man and especialy no mcu.

Richard Donner had the best handle on Superman in film. Nobody else has come close
I understand your opinion
Absolutely! Zack Snyder gave a superman I didn't recognize
@@rodmoore1577Andor gave me a star wars I didn't recognize

See now I just want them to review the first two in a retro review

Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman is what finally made me a real fan of the character. All of a sudden, I got it.
This video went off the rails the moment they mentioned Richard Pryor. I'm still waiting for them to talk about the hype surrounding Superman The Movie.
The old Superman cartoons made me a fan before Superman The Movie. Christopher Reeve was born to play Clarke Kent/Superman.
Martin laughing got me rolling😂😂🤣
5:27 LMFAOOO 😂😂😂😂 that Dad Grass kicking in

Just the soundtrack alone and the opening credits still has me hooked
What Martin was referring to was Brando told Richard Donner two strange things: he could either play it as a green suitcase or a bagel. When I read that I was like, wtf? Very bizarre.
I think Christopher Reeve was the best actor to effectively play both Superman and Clark Kent.
Superman Legacy will blow it out of the water😊

I love in Superman III when he starts flicking the peanuts in the bar.
These guys didn't talk anything surrounding the hype of Superman the Movie. They focus on Superman III.
Still remember the “you’ll believe a man can fly.”

I thought this video was about the hype surrounding the original Superman and not talking about Superman 3
Supe classic asf 😎👍🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I want a Super Grover-Super Goof-Super Duck crossover. Be epic.

Pretty much every superhero movie this year has bombed
Speaking of which, Reeves was roommates with Kevin Conroy. Hmmm....
Damn Korey, Stick to the god damn title! I hope he's goes off like before.
Just like the character in the comics the film basically threw the character into the mainstream and created the intrest for superhero content outside of comics. We prob wouldnt have no x men spider man and especialy no mcu.
I'm more of a Man Of Steel guy myself.
Good for you
Man of Steel is better
I respect your opinion and as much as I love Man of Steel, it's still not touching Superman '78.
Agreed. Man of Steel is simply NOISE. No emotion. No compelling characters. Just noise.@@krisj827
Nooooo
But music is better in new one
@@shayanlostflashyes it is
@@krisj827yes it is better than Superman the movie
