The biggest challenge for this kid is to not to be compared to buddy rich, he’s still finding his own sound and that’s a great thing. Massive potential.
Nobody can top buddy just because of the legend so why even bother comparing? There's 100 drummers I'd rather listen to than Buddy any day, this kid included. Love it.
With all respect and the utmost fun intentions here Mr Mike. Think about it, everyone everywhere from the beginning styled themselves after someone. I think it is an awesome thing that he has decided to develop himself to be able to handle such diverse styles that are here in 2022. Intentional or not I think is a great great thing to carry on the traditions and styles of all the spirits that were before him and us. Again with some fun in mind and tremendous respect for him, all I can say is he has some nerve having that much talent at such a young age!! Haha. Now everyone go home and practice and stop making comparisons!! ❤️🙃
And only needs a 4 piece kit, to blow most away.. So many of today’s drummers, bash loudly, double speed kick and sit behind massive kits. This kid is a real throwback, to BUDDY and GENE …Thank God for that..!
He's an up and coming drummer in the drum community that has amassed a huge following on Instagram. By age 17 he got sponsored by Pearl, Meinl, and vic firth. Dudes also gigged all over new york since high school and he's not even in his twenties yet. Definately one of the greatest drummers of my generation (25 and under crowd lmao)
Been following this lad on Instagram for a while and, while I would say the inevitable Buddy Rich comparisons are a huge compliment, he plays so much mare than just the trad jazz stuff. Natural born showman as well definitely someone to keep an eye on.
I agree. I keep seeing this comparison and the only reason I can imagine it is bc both use trad grip... because this solo doesn't sound anything like a Buddy solo
It's not what he's playing, but how. This restlessness and the stakkato phrasing is pretty buddy like. And i totally enjoy the fact that the young generation got a feeling for the tradition and reactivating this pseudo conservative zombie jazz attitude nowadays 🤗 rock n roll 🙌
I keep seeing this comparison but tbh, beyond the blazing single strokes and trad grip, I don't really see too many similarities. Minimal "Buddy-isms" in his playing...
@@kspocketngroove3973 he is very young in his musical career, it’s obvious who his biggest inspirations are and he’ll only continue to evolve. Im looking forward to hearing how he sound in five years.
this fenomenal YOUNG drummer is unique! some kind of a young mitch mitchell drumsound when playing with georgie fame and the blue flames. best sound showtime!
In 10 years from now he'll be deadly. Still has a ton of youthful frenetic energy but when he learns to slow down into something musical he'll be so special.
@@chezchezchezchez agreed but when he matures his playing will be much more musical. Right now hes just playing one riff after another based on what he's learned. But there's minimal expression musically. He'll get there though for sure.
@@JA-io8nx i’m just saying, let’s appreciate what gift /talent he has right now, without worrying about what he doesn’t have. Right now he has way more than most people will ever have.

Kid is fantastic, certainly a Buddy fan, drums, cymbals sound and tuning fit his style.....great chops , but nice ideas. Those crossovers are blinding.........
2:48 keeping the single stroke going with the left. Astounding technique. I've watched all your videos. Not only blisteringly fast but your timing is 100% on point. I believe you're going to make a name for yourself as one of the greatest.
If anybody has any “advice” or says “great potential”, my “advice” would be to upload a video of you doing better. Just enjoy pure talent and hard work and shut up.
I would have played with a similar reckless abandon at his age, just without the excellent jazz chops. He’ll hopefully refine what he does with experience and make it a little bit more musical. As all of us older drummers know, life will beat all that youthful exuberance out of him until he is too scared to play anything for fear of being cliched! Then he’ll come back out the other side, with chops, wisdom and all the ups and downs that life brings. He will be incredible. A very talented drummer though.
I used to study and practise West African hand drumming (djembe and dununs, other instruments) several years ago, and one thing I'll always remember about one of the Guinean masters (Mamady Keita, RIP) that I had a brief opportunity to learn from said to the class: "When I first came to America I would see these kids playing these things that look like djembe, but they're not. They would make noise with them but not play anything. Just noise. Then I realized I had a job to do. Teach these young people how to play djembe!" This guy definitely has talent but I think he needs to start playing with other musicians playing other instruments more often. This is like watching a drum circle!
Agreed but at the same time, the sound of the time was different as well as well as Buddy and Gene’s styles. Buddy knew full well that in any drum battle, he could have mopped the floor with Gene. The two were great friends and I believe out of respect of Gene’s heritage to drumming, age and their friendship, Buddy held back. For this, I have greater respect for Buddy.
Here in 1:00 we can clearly see Buddy Rich´s spirit throwing off the wing nut and the upper cymbal felt, and saying "Get this s**t off those cymbals, you are a f**k´n jazz drummer!"
Wicked chops, this guy has it! Purely constructive criticism offered in good spirit with no shade intended: Lacking in dynamics a little, they're there, he's trying to put it in but not quite nailing it.... that being said all drums are tuned a little too tight and high, backing it off a smidge and allowing a little more breath in the drums and I actually think his dynamic efforts would have shone though... heck it could even have been as simple as his mic arrangement... I wonder if this was an improvised last minute solo for Sweetwater, it would explain a lot.

Classically trained and bears a striking resemblance in sound and form to Buddy. Only, Buddy sweat a whole lot more..what a brilliant piece!!
