I told myself this: if I'm 38 years old and not married or have any kids, I'm joining the monastic life. I don't want to be alone; I want to be with my brother and sister in Christ, praising his glory name!

@@Regular_Pigeon every since I was little, I wanted to spend my whole life with God. I was Protestant at the time. But, I found out about the monastic life. If I don't have a family, then I shall convert my whole life to God.

I have definitely felt the allure of the monastic life. Of course, being married with children excludes me lol. I'm reminded of something a Celtic monk scribbled in the column of some ancient manuscript, "To travel to Rome is much toil and little profit. The King you seek you will not find, unless you bring Him with you." I've found that to be true. It can often seem like the greener pastures are 'over there', but no matter where you go, there you are. Not at all to say that I'm not extremely grateful for our monastics who struggle and pray for the life of the world!

Have no concern for money. Love your wife more than you love your own life. Prefer her company at home above being out. Esteem and admire her publicly, and advise her patiently. Pray together go to church and discuss the readings and prayers. If your marriage is like this, your perfection will rival the holiest of monks.
      -Saint John Chrysostom

Informative interview, thank you. I am doubtful monastic life is in my future, but it would be a beautiful way to live out the end of one's life in a state of prayer, repentance, obedience and service to God and others with a small community of Orthodox Christians.

Thank you Mother, I have been baptized Orthodox for 2 years and was inquirer/catechumen for also 2 years. I think about monasticism everyday, and despite having a mental illness, the monasteries that I have visited assured me that it will not disqualify me from pursuing monasticism. Thank you for your words, they are very similar to the words an abbess told me when I was still catechumen.

    0:16 A Deep Inner Calling.
0:43 A less deep external calling
    1:12 Something even deeper.
1:17 *If Monastic Life is seen as an Escape, It Won't Work*
1:25 *We don't escape anything coming to a Monastery*
    - If we have trouble getting along with people, we will have trouble getting along with people at a monastery.
1:54 If the person is coming for the right reasons, Mother Christophora's Suggestion is:
    *Be Orthodox for a while*
2:05 Be Orthodox for a while
    + Be IN A Parish, a good parish ☦️⛪️
+ Frequent attendant to Church Services, as much as you can
+ Offer to do a job or some tasks for the parish
2:48 Be realistic. Be a member for a couple years.
3:09 Be a member of the parish.
+ Start to get to feel the cycle rhythm.
    3:37
+ Get to know other people
+ Be near people who have Lived an Orthodox Life
3:44 "If it's written it must be true" it is written in Winnie The Pooh.
4:20 + Do some reading, but not too much.
    + A little at a time.
+ Something short, something you can do in the evening.
4:57 Remember God throughout the day.
    5:20 Routine Tasks
    + Laundry
    + Dishes
    5:27 A Little Practical Experience.
*Visit a Monastery if you can*
    5:53
6:10 Some Monasteries are committed to a particular something
    + Committed to Education
    + Committed to Publication
    + Committed to Welcoming Pilgrims
6:59 Speak with an Abbot or Abbess
+ Hear what their recommendations are
    7:11
    + You are discerning
+ So too is the Monastic Community discerning you
7:56 We can’t take everyone who asks to be a part of the monastery.
8:19 It's a process. It can be a delightful journey.

"If we have problems getting along with people ..." People, every and each person on earth will experience once in a while struggle to get along with specific people in a specific situation. So there is no one that has no problem at all, getting along with people (except for very few who are in a privileged situation to choose the interpersonal contacts). This is kind of banal.

I feel like you missed the point, Mother Cristofora isn't saying "if you have a problem with a particular person, don't become a monk", she is saying "If you're wanting to become a monk because you hate people or have some ideal of eremeticism that will keep you alone and away from everyone, then you might want to reconsider."

@@brettkennedy1588 I checked what she actually said: "If we have trouble getting along with people ..." Maybe she would like express something else, but that's what she's saying. I would like to generalise also something: monastics have problems getting along with people.
