Fast Quetzal Taming Guide :: Ark : Survival Evolved Tips and Tricks

- In this taming guide, I talk about how to tame a Quetzal. They can be one of the more difficult solo tames in ark as there are very limited and specific ways to tame a quetzal alone. If you have people to help you, you can just carry a second person with a Pteranodon and have them knock it out. If you're alone, you don't have that luxury. I outline some of the easiest methods and a couple of the more difficult or unusual methods. In my opinion, you just need to tame a griffin and transfer it into the map you want to tame a Quetzal on. Not only is the Griffin the easiest to use, it gets even better because of the passenger seat on the Griffin's back. The next easiest uses either a Pteranodon and a grappling hook or the front passenger seat of a Tapejara saddle and whistle move and whistle attack commands to follow a Quetzal. This method isn't quite as easy as using a Griffin, but you don't need to transfer in any special creatures. Past that, once you have a quetzal tamed, and have a platform saddle for it, you can tame any quetzal you want easily. Just build a 3x3x3 trap with double doorframes in the center of each wall the top missing, fly from under the Quetzal you want to tame, and place the ceilings in place to trap it. As long as your Quetzal doesn't move, or you don't leave you Quetzal, it makes the tame super easy.

I couldn't find any quetzal on my map but I finally found one, followed it around for an hour because it kept going in dangerous areas and when I was finally ready to knock it out I saw a higher level and better colored one, so I shot at that and when it finally went down it almost got killed by Carnos, thylas, bugs, you name it. I barely got it and as soon as it tamed I cryopodded it and flew home

You can also drop a trail of honey while mounted on a flyer, the quetzal will then follow the honey to the ground and then u can trap it with four dino gate in a square form.. then pelt it with tranq dart.. much easier for me. Just bring lots of honey and a dino on crypod to protect you just incase. Hope this helps

Yeah I did use tapejara because it has three seats so I sit in this front sit and whistle my tape to attack the quetz while I shoot it with Trang dart

There is also another method. If you go in front of the quetzal and drop honey it will fly after the honey to the ground, where you can use Dino gates to trap it

I used this and it works good 😊 I made sure that my whole hot bar was full of honey and put the dino gates in one spot and dropped one honey at a time until it was at the ground. It took me a few tries but I tamed a tek quetzal.

Tapejara method as shown here, requires patience. Also, bring to mind the glitch, flying to 50, 50, place a wall of spikes, it’s alright even if it’s wooden spike walls. Make it large enough to encompass the whole coordinate, and brung an extra 10 or 15 on the taming day. If you don’t have access to shocking tranq darts, use a higher quality and higher damage longneck rifle. Don’t you dare use normal narcs as well, use bio toxin. The torpor drain on these guys are fast af. I already tamed one wayyyy before this video on mobile, needless to say I already prepared two or three pieces of rex kibble (I always snatched rex eggs and mercilessly killed the mother for exp) and a sh*t ton of meat. Because my quetzal fell near the mountain, I got argies and allos all around me, solving my need for prime meat to speed up taming. I also used a 10x balm (mobile only, gained from caving and tributing artifacts) as well. As I was knocking down the quetz, I always used my spyglass to check on the amount of torpor it has, and thus, calculate how much time these bastards need to wake up using dododex. When it fell unconscious, I built a spike wall around it, put 2 stacks of bio toxin in the quetz to keep it down, and the taming food. My tapejara was lvl 150+ when I tamed it, so I had no problems with weight, and it was already lvl 220+ when I started taming a quetz, so my tapejara had around 400+ weight in him to support the amount of bio toxin I need to tame along with the extras and the taming food. While it was taming, I rode my tapejara and went to a nearby tree to cling on to rest. ASAP I saw a predator wandering nearby, I sniped it with my ascendant longneck rifle, cut it up, then put the prime meat in the quetz’s inventory. Took two whole ark days to tame even with balm.

For the snow owl method, you could use a chain bola or bear trap to secure the quetzal. You could trap it afterwards which makes it really easy to keep in in the gates.

We need a quetzal tlc that makes them faster and adds a sonic boom ability that only happens when they take off on the ground which damages and stuns wild creatures,enemy tames and players
Problem is tho is that their slow to balance them, being the only flyer with a platform saddle it would be broken af if they were fast

Oh right pro tip. Make a big wall of spike walls at the 50,50 so that when the quetzal falls to that or near that place (bring extra spike walls just in case, around 10 since these guys are huge) it will be a bit secured. Use an argy or a high lvl tapejara for this (tapejara method requires patience. Too much patience) and chase and tranq the quetzal. Use a high quality longneck rifle (apprentice or ascendant, depends on you, and bring at least two, one main and the other for backup) if shocking tranq darts are still unavailable to you. Use bio toxin instead of narcs for this, as a quetzal’s torpor drains fast, rivals the Therizinosaurus or the compy in drainage.
load up the pteranodon with some heavy stuff, so he stayes at a distance to the quezal and flies slower. i have not tried it yet, but just came to that idea lol. will try it asap :D
The Pteranodon method worked for me, though I had to do intensive research and experimentation to figure out how grouping, whistling, and grappling work.

Just tame it on rag. Its almost like its programmed to always go to the snow and get stuck after a while.
Step 1: spot the one you like to tame
Step 2: get on your argy, have grapples, parachutes, tranq darts and a good simple rifle(got a 188% BP after gathering loot drops from the ice queen)
Step 3: get close to it, unmount, use parachute, and grapple on the argy, whistle the argy to attack and start shooting the quetzal, then whistle passive when it gets too close to the quetzal.
Step 4: keep shooting it, and eventually it starts getting stuck in the mountains. And you can even shoot it from the ground.
(Depending on your torpor you might lose decent health, I usually carry extra sleeping bags)
My first Quetzal was a Level 15 one. It was on a singleplayer world on Ragnarok so I used the Griffin method. Quetzal ended up landing in the area between the canyon and murder snow mountains so there were allos, carnos and sabers patrolling about. Put down a parameter of spiked walls, fed it some raw mutton and it tamed up quickly since it was a low level. Pumped some weight and stamina on to it, made a platform saddle with a trap and went on to tame a 135 one.
My advise is to just go for a low level one first, especially if you're using the grapple or tapejara, so you don't have to struggle and fight the controls for too long. Once you have one Quetzal, taming subsequent ones get infinitely easier with the trap method, since you don't have to worry about chasing it down or getting eaten by predators.
or just go for a high lvl one, go in front of it, throw honey and when it follows the honey to the ground make a trap and tame it lol

@@memerminecraft3226 I would consider the Island's legendaries to be giga, quetzal, and titanosaur. Velonasaur's stats are a little too low for that status.

Neat, I never thought of trapping it lol. I just carry around a scorpion on aggressive and wait a few seconds before flying passed again lol. Takes like 6 stabs for me for like level 175 :D

@@Te3time It can be stressful at times, you have to be the right distance next to it or just below the wings. Easier to use an Argent to carry the scorp and then fly slowly around it. Might take an hour, but it's worth it for the strategy lol

I'm on The Center. Every so often this level 174 Tek Quetzal would fly around the small island under the blue obelisk, where I have my base. This has happened many times. This time I became determined I wanted it !!!

Time to try the solo play Pteranadon method.
Wow, that was a learning experience. Didn't get the Queztal, this time! A lot of bouncing around. But I discovered that there is much less jarring when aiming if I only use the move whistle and send the Pteranadon over the Quetz's head about three times higher than the Q is long.
Next time I take about 300 tranq darts, level 174 needs less than 80 according to Dododex.

The closest thing to a quetzal I tamed is a tapajara but it was a low level but I still got it just because they are rare
The method I recommend is using an argentavis to carry a friend while they shoot the quetzal with tranqs. Make sure your argie has plenty of stamina. Trust me it's alot easier when you have a friend with you

Crystal Isles is also a great place to look for Quetzals, they're practically everywhere. And if you get really lucky, sometimes they get themselves stuck in the floating isles.
Fun fact: Griffins are now out in the island map! They can be found around the volcano

Sometimes i found a quetzal and wanted tame it cuz bro so tired of my argys weight i needed sh1t ton of metal and while it was fleeing it got too near to my base and my plant species started shooting it making it slow i recommend doing this to tame a quetzal
Interestingly enough I’m on day 70 of the island and I’ve only seen one quetzal ever and it was a tek Quetzal, it was very low level and I slaughtered it but I highly regret doing that now

My favorite ways to tame are with the front seat of a tapejara to tame a low level one and use that quetzal to tame another

In my world, i found a quetzal in herbivore island on the ground landing, but as soon as it rendered in, it immediatsly flew high in the sky.
So they land just MEGA RARE
I tamed one by shooting it from a cliff with the shock tranq dart (2 or 3 hits) and feeding a variety of different meats. It was really low level so I just leveled it up by going around attacking trees.
I used the Tapejara method and it worked! But my quetzal decided to land in the redwoods right next to the swamp so i have to get my spino to protect it from titanboas, raptors, crocs, and other aggressive things.

You can eat rare flowers and luer it into a trap on the ground.

yo guys I recommend to use ballista turret to use chain bola it and use like 700 narcotic and get like 40 meat and then use longneck with tranq darts (must be level 50 or 47) to tame one sorry if that depresses you guys.

crystal iles is loaded with griffins. go get one and quetz is insanely easy to tame. also invest in kibble. rexes work great for it. so do deinos and.breeding if you got all the stuff for it.

Nowadays you can use just use a net in a harpoon gun and either trap it or keep following the quetzal and repeat until it goes night night
Another method is using honey and then whilst the quetzal is distracted, going for the honey you can place a trap around it.
Might just be me but I think they patched Snow Owl method recently cause I just tried it today and it wouldn't let me freeze it after a certain height off the ground.

Question, can you grapple onto the Quetzal (the one you wish to tame) and tranq it while dangling from said grapple
My biggest issue is invalid hits. I can't tell you how many times I go to tame something in this game and I shoot it and will see blood hear the hit marker sound but no green numbers or torpor increase
Could you possibly just grapple to the quetzal? Go up to it with a flyer, grapple it, then parachute down when it gets knocked out?
