- TLC's Sister Wives character Kody is struggling to maintain his power not only over Christine but the entire Brown family, and he is failing. From the relationship foundation of communication, to how his selection of wives lead to this inevitable conclusion
Kody is right about one thing. By leaving him, and simply declaring herself divorced from him Christine did invalidate plural marriage. She showed us all that all you have to do is to say "bye boi" A marriage is not just a relationship, it is also a legal contract, but there is NOTHING binding Christine and Kody. Hopefully miserable sister wives everywhere saw just how easy it is to leave
Last season, as things were really starting to unravel, I remember realizing that while I'd always thought about the way that the wives were vulnerable in polygamy, I hadn't thought about the way that men were vulnerable. All of their power stems from their patriarchal faith. It evaporates the instant the wife no longer recognizes the church as an authority.

Meri's a great example of this. Meri was born and raised in this cult. Her beloved mother, Bonnie, was dedicated to the cult all her life, and Meri is likely to also do the same.
They are brainwashed to live this life, with the promise of a glorious afterlife in the Celestial Kingdom.
I'm sure Christine's move has inspired other women to find their strength to leave a toxic relationship and/or a cult!
@@ShellBAtoms Oh, I'm not trying to deny any of that. Just stating my realization that men's power in this system is precarious and illusory. It still represents a very real hurdle for all the reasons you noted, and indoctrinated people may be very slow to come to the point where they can *begin* look at the situation critically. But once the process starts and a little light gets in? That collapse is going to be swift and total.

As usual, You're spot on! Years ago, Christene said she always went with whatever Kody said. It wasn't until she saw and realized Robyn had a voice. She realized Kody Valued Robyn's voice, her ideas. He never did that with her. That's when she began to voice her own opinions. That's why she's saying her communications with kody were better towards the end. Christene finally had the same volume of voice as Robyn. But Kody HATES IT!
All those years with a marriage counselor, Christene tried for a decade and a half of trying to repair her marriage. Unfortunately, she realized all those years were wasted because the only way to repair the marriage is to go backward. To be the mouse in the corner.
Kody and Robyn's beliefs on marriage? He's not married to Merri, she can go, he doesn't care. But Christene has to ask permission from a church she no longer belongs to? Kody doesn't belong to the church either, double standards much?

After Christine said the Rock Tower of Galveston was supposed to be about their individual marriage, Kody said it's about the entire family and that "If you honor the family, I will honor you." And she capitulated because she knew Kody wouldn't bend any other way. It was his way or no way. I'm so glad she took her power back and that it shocked the h*ll out of Kody when she did it. And he had the gall tti say that to her when she was the one who did all the dirty work raising all the kids & even offered to tend for Robyn but she got a nanny. Robyn, Janelle, never were helping w/her kids but Kody never threw them under the bus for it. He was using it against Christine, that she wanted to be treated like Robyn was treated. Kody refused to make anything about their relationship … using her dedication to kids as excuse when she had raised everyone . Imagine all the diapers and messes, but she did it without complaint.
I remember that show! Also the rock building, I was embarrassed for Christine, it was so obvious he was thinking of Robyn!

After I got past my anger with how Robyn behaved and what she said, I went back and listened to it again. It was interesting that Robyn refers to the family, the culture and Sister Wives as separate things. Robyn means the Sister Wives BRAND! She is not about caring for these women. It's about the MONEY to her. Kody too. He keeps referring to the happy polygamy FACADE that they were faking. Robyn and Kody are all about the TV show and keeping the revenue stream from the show running into their bank accounts. It is not about Christine, Janelle or Meri feeling happiness in the family. Their anger is about the future of the TV show. They are about the MONEY!

Of course it’s about money. She’s the only one that hasn’t had a job since joining the family. Robyn’s kids are big and her two kids by Kody have a nanny. Why doesn’t she have a job? She has 5 adults in her house, why does she need a nanny. She’s a greedy whore and she got divorced and struggled and said to herself, never again. Now she’ll do anything and say anything to keep her hooks in her cash cow. Kody is too narcissistic to be effectively good at anything. She needs those wives, and they have a work ethic. Without them, once the show is gone…then the money is gone & she knows it.

That therapy session was such a great metaphor for what was wrong with their relationship. Kody had always had an individual relationship with each of his wives except Christine. They weren't always the same level of romantic and they were all different, but they were separate from the family dynamic. He never had that with Christine. He loved Meri at some point even if he doesn't now, and he always had a more platonic thing with Janelle, but he still has a relationship with her. His relationship with Christine has ALWAYS been about how she relates to and with the other wives. Her relationship with Kody has never stood on its own the way his has with the other three. She truly was the basement wife.
It always seemed to me that Christine was viewed as more of a servant to the rest of them.

What’s so interesting about Kody trying to paint his and Christine’s marriage as not that bad, I remember the end of the episode from S16 when he finds all of his stuff in boxes in Christine’s garage. He said a lot of nasty things, but what stood out in my memory was that he said he felt “relief” from shackles/burden of a “loveless marriage.” He knew what the deal was! He is only acting brand new because Christine behaved out of character and finally stopped begging for his love and affection! During the last episode when he asks “Why would my kids want for her to leave unless she told them she was in a loveless marriage?” He himself described it that way without any prompting. I guess I’ve realized what dishonest people Kody and Robyn are. Where they will lie and gaslight to make sure they come out smelling like a rose, but fortunately most people can see that they were and are the main problem.

And you are this 1st one to talk about how Kody says he is divorced from Meri and that's okay, but when Christine says she is divorced that's not okay. When Robyn says,"You're lying." she's 100% incorrect and you're right. I honestly think though Christine was trying to make the best of a bad situation. Christine had all of her kids in the home in Vegas and she still believed in plural marriage and wanted to raise her kids with their dad. Christine's relationship could absolutely f'n suck but she was trying to repair it. That doesn't mean their relationship was good but it was Christine struggling with Kody to make it work.

Hey James, This really hits home. Well it used to be. My estranged husband is a narcissistic man. To put it nicely. I begged and begged and begged him to talk to me and I communicated with him but I couldn't talk to him so I just stopped talking. No matter how much I talked with him or tried to it was all about communication. We don't have communication we don't have a good marriage! I totally agree with him. Didn't think no I knew we didn't have a good marriage! Which I thought if we both agreed on that and this just go our separate ways be happy. But he said he couldn't be happy without me and my kids. That was just because he had to have somebody to treat the way narcissistic people treat others. Talk about gaslighting and man you the road to gaslighting And then when I told him that I didn't like him anymore I could not stand to be with him the way he is He would start crying the crocodile tears and say if I left him he would not live without me. I see where you coming with this communication thing I understand it, because he was going to be so much better anytime I talk to her about leaving. Just praising the Lord that my children and I are back together have been since 2017 they're adults now. He left to go out of state for the doctor so he could get his medicine and he just stayed in that state. I told him I didn't want him to come back. And I even found out some things that really scared me about him. And he hasn't been back since thank the good Lord he helped me. It is not and I repeat not easy to get out of that kind of a relationship! And it's not because you don't want to! Anyway may have said too much already but I sit here and I watch Kody and it brings back so much and how I understand what he's doing and I pray for Meri, Christine, and Janelle because all three of them are being gas lighted by Kody and Robyn the Sobin crocodile tears. Reality check: We're seeing what should have been three divorces (Mari, Janelle, Christine) and now Kody married to Robin. Which is how it technically is (Kody is legally married to Robin only). And when Robin doesn't give him more children, Kody will show new interest in another.

Christine is the whole reason that the show exists in the first place. Kody owes ALL his "fame" and money from that - to Christine. Given that Christine's grandfather was the actual founder of the AUB cult, she was AUB royalty, and was happy to do talks in favor of plural marriage. TLC spotted Christine on a talking tour - supporting plural marriage. It was Christine that attracted TLC, and got the show started. Kody owes all his $ and fame to Christine.
So before TLC, the Browns ran up debt, declared multiple bankruptcies - and committed welfare fraud.
Before TLC, all of the OG wives declared bankruptcy - Janelle in 1997, Meri in 2005, and Christine in 2010. Then since Kody's not on the birth certificates, they could commit welfare fraud as single mothers with tons of kids.
I'm so glad that Christine and Janelle have finally risen above all of this.
