At the end when Chef makes Erin her cheeseburger, he's finally wanting to cook for someone but also...Erin is enjoying giving her services. She's a sex worker, yeah, but that also comes with paying for _experience_ and I think she genuinely wants a cheeseburger/IS hungry but there's a performative element to it too. She's giving him a roleplay kind of thing; challenging him, cutting him down, making eye contact whole doing it, too. She's being something he desperately wants because that's what SHE is good at, so there's a symbiotic back-and-forth between them which is what makes that scene so electric hahahaha; it's flirtatious, creepy, intense, and cathartic. And another element to it is her utilizing her survival skills as a sex worker, too. She knows how to deal with a dangerous, unpredictable client.
She treated the chef like a regular chef, not a celebrity.

This whole movie is amazing, but “These are tortillas” is one of the greatest movie moments of all time and you can not convince me otherwise ❤

One thing that I just noticed is that although they were all startled by Jeremy dying, they got over it pretty quickly. When Doug the investor was killed though, they got much more emotional, because he was one of them
To be fair i think part of that was because they didn't fully accept what was happening when Jermey kills himself.
This happens quite a bit in reality, people’s brains cannot handle or accept the implication and or situation so it seeks any answer it can to rationalize and justify
When Doug Verrck is slowly drowned and there is no more denying what the night is now about, or what Julian's mission is
then they are more accepting of it
Also Jermey’s suicide is quite quick and momentary, the chefs are quick to carry his body out of there, and there isn’t really time for the customers to react to what they just saw,
the moment Jermey is dead and carted off, Chef has the cooks plate the 4th course and then demands the guests eat.
You can see that most of them are shaken but not entirely sure of what was happening
which makes it a bit easier for them to blank it off as a skit or a bit, as the critic implies
When Verrick is slowly drowned, it's drawn out, it’s slow. Slowik wants to draw it out and take every second possible to enjoy the sounds of his “liberation”
so much so that the customers not only have more time to take in the situation, but when they beg and offer what they think Is valuable to stop it, only to have it rejected
they realize what Erin/Margo did, that they were going to die as well, and there was no way to buy their way out of it
hence why the one investment bro panics and tries to run after Slowik tells him he doesn't need their money.
The customers except for Margo, broke his spirit, the critic is the reason his first restaurant shut down, the tech guys go to many high end restaurants like his and are also faking transactions, the older couple have visited the restaurant and barely gave any thought to what was cooked, Tyler's a kissass and John's movie wasted his time. Some of the reasons he's torturing them are petty, but he had enough.
Being an ex chef, I’ve never not heard of a non petty chef.

I feel bad for George the movie star. Dude acted in one bad movie, prolly just to pay his bills, and he got punished for it. The equivalent would be if Chef Slowik killed Adam Sandler because he saw Pixels
I think that Tyler and the chef view cooking in completely opposite ways. The chef sees it as an artform. You have to get your hands dirty and work in a kitchen. It’s about what you do more than what you know. For Tyler, his knowledge of cooking is a dick measuring contest. He wants to feel like he’s smarter and better than everyone. But he’s never actually worked for it. The chef humiliates him because he’s just a rich kid with a lot of time on his hands who thinks he’s better than everyone.

I equate it to those people who watch those home flipping tv shows and think they can suddenly flip a house. Or even going further back and all those people who watched the original CSI and were hit in the face with the fact that criminalists don't actually solve crimes. Tyler is that guy who watches every cooking show on tv and thinks that makes him a chef.
Not only that, he also knew the real reason why everyone was there, was to die. Including himself. Dude was such a kiss ass and I did not like how he was speaking to Erin.
My exact thoughts about Tyler and This Movie Was So brilliant and Very funny especially The Chase scene 😂
John Leguizamo’s character being a part of this, I think has a slightly deeper meaning. An aging artist beginning to do his work with no passion, only coming to set for a paycheck and not doing what he loves for the love. That is what I think bothered Chef.
What’s ironic about it is that the actor does admit he had fun shooting it. Unlike Chef the actor was still able to get joy from his work even when he didn’t have passion for it.
Funnily enough, his part was originally going to go to Daniel Radcliffe but he was busy. Would have been Voldemort telling Harry Potter he hated his movie
He was also about to start his own celebrity traveling foodie reality show...which probably played a role in his selection
There is no simple honor anymore in doing a job you feel meh🤷🏻 about just for the money to support yourself and your family. You are told to find a career you basically would do for free because it's your passion (for example teachers get payed crap and when asking for more reasonable pay are told to stop thinking about the money and "do it for the kids! Do it for the love of teaching!"). It is so taboo to want compensation for your work that if you do you are perceived as entitled, or a heartless workaholic, or a sell-out, or a shill, or unambitious, or someone who's given up. One of the most instant ways to not get hired for a job is to be the one to bring up the topic of pay! So yeah I see nothing wrong with actors taking roles for the paycheck and nothing more! Now if you are utterly miserable that's a different story because that's not healthy but my point is burning passion should not need to be a prerequisite.

The giving a little bite to the last person who was caught absolutely killed me
The older couple was already in the restaurant ahead of everyone else, since they have been in the island/restaurant 11 times, as stated later in the movie. Also, Elsa said earlier in the movie when they arrived that they no longer have to participate in the tour.
And Ralph Fiennes' firts name is pronounced as "Rayf".

I mean if I was a chef and did a presentation to a room of 12 people before every dish and a customer came in 11 times and didn't remember at least the dessert I'd be a bit annoyed.
There's a deleted scene of the tour where the older couple announces their exit and heads towards the restaurant immediately

Love that you did this! I don't think Hong Chau's getting enough comments as Elsa. I loved her in Downsizing and can't wait to see The Whale, she gives her all to every role. Hope she does some more mainstream projects in the future.
Her "tortillas" delivery was a high point of the movie, for sure.
She was fantastic in The Whale and works off of Fraser exceptionally well. Rooting for her to get more accolades for her turn in that film. Definitely provided some of the more memorably creepy, darkly funny moments in The Menu.

So Leguizamo’s assistant was an asshole? Just because she didn't have student loans? wtf? That makes zero sense. And don't mention the fact that she was skimming off her boss (still not a reason to die).... the chef never brought that up. He only asked where she went to school and if she used loans. Weak movie.

So what do these facts mean when they're put together? The assistant's family was able to put her through an elite Ivy League school without financial assistance. This means her family was able to easily afford a whopping total of $355,792 in tuition fees alone. That number still doesn't account for other common college expenses like food, housing, textbooks, and extracurricular activities! And despite being already wealthy, the assistant still felt the need to steal money from her boss.
Do you get it yet? Having trouble? Let's review. Given that she came from a rich family and went to an expensive, elite college, Chef Slowik assumes the assistant and her family are exactly the same kind of rich snobby people that he's designed the night to punish.
Hopefully that explanation cleared everything up! It's a good subtle jab of a joke that can go over people's heads if they're not looking for it 😊
John Leguizamo slowly growing into his 'dies-in-every-movie' phase is something I didn't know I'd enjoy from anyone besides Sean Bean.
Absolutely loved this movie and the underlying themes. Definitely clicks more with a second viewing.
Yeah, but it feels like it's more about the themes than it is about being a film. The characters feel like they aren't even real, they're caricatures of people.

I just noticed how when chef Slowik tells Erin to get the barrel from his house, he says "there's only one more savoury course left in our menu, that means we have to prepare for dessert". The only dish served before the s'more is the cheeseburger. He knew Erin would ask for it. But for how long he knew, I'm not sure.
The savory course was the dessert as that was the last thing on the menu.
No, there's a deleted scene where while she was gone, the actor was being force-fed a dish made entirely out of peanuts by his assistant.
It was supposed to be a callback to him telling Elsa about his allergy right when he got to the island.

And the women DO get bread during Man's Folly. And it IS as delicious as promised. That's what Tyler's eating when he's confronted.
I jumped quite a few times in the theater when he would clap. Elsa was my favorite character. I don't know how any of those chefs kept straight faces because my ass would have just bust out laughing.

Which is a huge flaw in the plot because everything and everyone was meticulously chosen. If she wasn't on the list (and part of the plan) why did they even let her on the boat? Makes no sense.

Thanks for doing an entertaining reaction to The MENU!! It was easily my top ten movie of 2022, I watched it three times in my local art house theater in Seoul, South Korea. In my first watch, I wasn't the biggest fan of the end with the dessert, but after doing a second and third watch, I actually thought it was an appropriate ending to a wonderful movie. I noticed from your reaction that you guys had little knowledge about the premise of the movie which is the best way to watch this movie. I also gave it a 4.5 star rating. Plus the dark comedy in this movie was top notch. The acting from Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicolas Hoult were outstanding!! I really enjoy watching your BRIDGECO RUclips Channel...
I feel like, in the simplest of terms, this film is about why critics suck lol Not just food critics, all critics. They take the fun out of everything. They look at the experience from an analytical perspective from beginning to end, and even when they "enjoy" the experience, they aren't experiencing the experience so to speak. Even the critics who have mostly positive things to say suck. I was actually just thinking about this the other day, after reading a review of a film.
The majority of the review was positive, and in the second to last paragraph they brought up something they saw as negative about the film. The thing they brought up however, personally, I think was objectively wrong, and I say that because what they brought up was something that you would NEVER notice or think about if you were totally engrained in the experience. You would only ever think about it if you refused to let yourself suspend disbelief, if you refused to let the notion that you are watching a film fade away. From beginning to end, a film critic enters and views a film through strict intellectual and analytical eyes.
Films, and television, even food; these are things you are not meant to "think" about, at least during the experience. They are meant to be felt. Critics do too much thinking, not enough feeling. If you stop feeling, it taints the very purpose of the experience itself. It reduces the experience to language and words, concepts, descriptions. The experience is supposed to be a moment that transcends all those things. When you really feel something deeply, there are no words that can grasp it's true impact.
I also just think it's completely and totally fucking absurd, that we live in a society where being a critic is something you get paid for 🤣 I think it's the most pretentious profession imaginable.
The thing about critics is that they're pretty much just a relic from a time period when people had to pick and choose what films they saw and, very importantly, needed a resource to help them find movies worth spending that money on. We don't need them to serve that purpose anymore because average people can easily give their own reviews and spread them, so all the more professional critics have to focus on is in the highly technical, or in minute details. And of course, professional critics see so many movies, or shows, or whatever, that their standards for what makes something fun or interesting are different from most people. It doesn't matter how well a story works because they've seen it all so many times and it bores them, so they focus on pretentious shit because that's novel, or it lets them flex.
Think of it like wine-tasting; Do you really think these people care about the precise weather conditions of that vintage's year or what barrel it was stored in? Do you think they can really tell some overpriced bottle from a wine cooler that comes in a cardboard box? Fuck no (and we've tested that), but it lets them pretend to be refined.
After all that, I still can't tell if you liked this pretentious piece of trash or not. 😆

At a certain point every reason for killing is kinda petty but all that really needs to make sense to the person doing the killing and Chef has gotten tot he point where all the people in the room have just killed his joy of what used to make him happy even Tyler that guy who watches every cooking show on tv but knows nothing about what it really takes to be the best.
Watching you react to this, I caught all the foreshadowing in the dialogue in the beginning that I wouldn’t have noticed on my first watch. I loved this movie! To me, it was a dark comedy. I’m glad they went that route instead of straight horror.

My wife went with some friends a few weeks ago to a fancy restaurant dinner with a surprise fixed menu, and the last course was a cheeseburger to go.
I did not expect to love this film as much as I did in was drunk when I watched it in the cinema but I loved definitely watching this every year
i loved this movie!! it was so unique and not what i expected, im also suprised at how it played out i really thought it was just a movie about food lol

i have a lot of fine dining experience and this became my favorite horror movie because it’s so spot on. i fully understand Chef and i don’t see him as psycho or crazy at all. not only that, but the ending dessert was inspired by a restaurant i literally used to work next door to called Alinea. the dining experience in this movie is similar to that restaurant.

It's Gorden Ramsay meets lord Voldemort but when Margo orders that cheese burger his whole demeanor he enjoyed cooking most likely for the first time in meany years.
he explains that they probably couldve gotten away if they truly wanted to but they all had a sense of guilt and acceptance about it and they feel a level of guilt that the convince themselves they deserve it. so they dont even make a real effort

They stayed because the female food critic said the chef is "theatrical. It's a part of the show." And they believed her?? WTF? So many issues with this. Stunned people liked it.
Super fun movie, and for me at least, way more funny than I was anticipating
This movie was surprisingly good and creepy. The chef, aka Julian Slowik, is a great villain with mental problems and great manipulating techniques that can simply get into. I get what he's coming from, like he hates people who have bad egos or are very abusive to their lives just like his father. He is very similar to the Beast in Split because he let go of Margot because she suffered enough from his maniacal ideas and unworthy fancy menus that Slowik have been not liking from his past life, and the actress also played a character in Split who has suffered or let go by the anatogonist I was surprised by the let go scene, like the secret truth to defeat him is his happiness or passion. He just wants to do something that he likes the most or something meaningful for him to make him happy, but others pressured him to do something fancy or not to have so much passion or happiness on things he likes. My favorite part was the Tyler scene because Slowik whispered something to Tyler and maybe told him that he made a big mistake to bring Margot and saw the toxicness of him and how annoying he is because he just saw a version of his father. Did you see a little smile from him because Margot says make a cheeseburger.
the ending seems to say that "real" food is life. This is a victory bite while watching the Bourgeois go to waste
Another great twisted satire on the rich is SOCIETY from 1989. I think it's still on Shudder and it's honestly one of my favorite horror movies.

I really enjoyed this movie! Then I watched it with my godson, who is an actual sou chef! He gave so much insight into this! He could relate to what these people are like as guests, and the desire to strangle them sometimes. A great movie, with great performances, an actual restaurant action. (Without the the crazy, killing. )

I genuinly can't tell if the reactors got the class commentary of this movie, which is a weird thing to say as the biggest criticism of this movie I've seen is how blatant they make it.

The class thing practically hits you like a pie in the face.
I love that they had an actual chef there to help design and photograph the courses. 3 Star Michelin chef Dominique Crenn.
Oysters and lemon mignonette - Common flavors put together that have to be broken down and deconstructed, foreshadowing what happens to the guests. This is meant to be taken as Chef throwing down the gauntlet.
Amuse Bouche - More foreshadowing. Charred lace - crater. Milk snow - ash from the fire. Cucumber and melon - the guests.
The Island - Scallop on a rock - Chef presenting himself to the guests. Plants - "in the weeds"
Breadless bread plate - straight up snarking at picky customers. But you can also make a case for Lilian's plate having a broken emulsion on purpose as his way of saying SHE'S as useless as a broken emulsion.
Memory - Self explanatory
The Mess - Pressurized vegetables - literal pun. Bone marrow - blood. Beef jus - sweat. Potato confit - tears. As a whole, it's essentially a dead body with blood pouring out. It even has a hole for the bullet.
Man's Folly - Plum vinegar exists because of Umeboshi, whey plays a vital part in making yogurt, sea kelp and lettuce are what keeps the oceans biome from wreaking havoc. But everyone either doesn't know that or forgets, because they don't taste good, aren't as attractive, or can be very difficult to work with in their natural form. It's the same with women, especially when they try to speak out against unfair treatment like what the chef describes. They get called things like "bottom feeders", like crabs.
Final scene with Margot/Erin eating the cheeseburger - She didn't care about giving him peace of mind. She just wanted to survive. And Chef acknowledged that.
Using his menu as a napkin - She never believed anything he said for one second. She is, in fact, a taker that knows her worth. And that's why she lived.
A grown man distracted by the word _fuck_ is the reason my cinemas have been reduced to comic book stores.

I think it's a very clever move to have the cheeseburger look like the absolute best and most delicious cheeseburger to have ever been made - leaving us, the audience, ever dissatisfied with cheeseburgers we order as they will never live up to this one perfect-looking burger
26:15 dunno if any other comments mentioned it but i heard there was a deleted scene where it was mentioned the critic woman actually found Slovik working as a cook in a cheap food truck and demanded an interview. So, for a time he actually did try going off the grid and returning to his roots as a humble chef only to get sucked back into this culture.
I don't think the actor was killed just because he was in a crappy movie, just like how I don't think his assistant was killed just because she didn't need student loans. I think the whole guestlist was picked because of their wealth, but more specifically, the way that they want to be seen as bigshots going to some famous chef's restaurant, but it's all a show. They don't know the first thing about the food they eat, they under appreciate it and to them, it's just a way of showing off. The businessmen are treating it like a boys night out, not a fine dining experience. And one of them brags about his chef being better showing he doesn't know how to differentiate between two chef's work, he may as well be eating from a cheap restaurant. The actor claims to know the chef and he wants to do a cooking show despite the fact he is not a chef and his image as a chefs friend is a fake. The older couple is most clearly spelt out. For them, they come regularly but never appreciate it, not even remembering the meals they eat. And the critics are just critics, the worst thing to happen to any artform. They all are here for the wrong reasons wanting something other than to just enjoy the food. They chase fame, prestige and money. The only two who aren't like that are Tyler and not Margot. Tyler however wants all the answers, and wants to know how it's all done, thus exposing the chefs trade secrets, taking the mystery out of the art. And not Margot is the only one who gets it. That food should be enjoyed, it's not a path to fame or glory. It's not about making the craziest dish, it's not about being the most expensive or having the most lavish ingredients. And she exposes chef for also being a part of the problem. Because he craves being the best and being the more original. And it is that which makes him unhappy. Because he was at his happiest making good honest food, which people enjoy and people want more of, even if they cannot physically finish it. It is a greater honour for a customer to say can I have the rest to go, than for them to eat every crumb on their plate and leave unsatisfied. So I think it was a mistake them not making the motivation for killing the actor be his lies about knowing the chef. I think they said it was the bad movie for a laugh. But deep down, I think all of them are guilty of the same crime of making him fall out of love with his craft and for using him and his food to self inflate their egos and their power.
I loved this movie so much! I definitely think they served Margot the 153rd day beef though.

John Leguizamo's date was the most innocent of all. This movie was WILD
She wasn't his actual date, she was his assistant. She "worked" for him, a kind of "service worker". But, she was also a thief who stole money from her boss even though she came from a wealthy family and didn't need to. He might of let her live if she was "poor". That's why he asked her if she had student loans. Not deserving of death for sure, but not innocent at all in the chef's eyes. The only one that was the innocent was Margot/Erin.

In another part of the original script, it mentions
a) Chef was found running a taco truck outside a Food Expo, and it was "the happiest he'd ever been", and Lillian ruined that with the interview that made Hawthorne into a reality.
b) Margot calling him out on the fact that he parked his taco truck outside the Food Expo KNOWING Food critics were going to be there.

Erin/Margot dies. They specifically bring up the aged beef and it's toxic effects, the chef mentions there's a savory course left in the menu when only dessert is remaining, she gets her burger medium which is a food safety risk, the boat breaks down suspiciously right outside the island, we end with her taking a bite and the chef's CLAP indicating it's part of the menu after all.
Everyone I've shown this movie to says the same thing.

So in the script, it just called for Margot to sit there and cry upon finding out Tyler brought her there knowing she was going to die. Anya herself said no, and that's how we got her just straight up losing her shit on him.

Yeah the chef's main motive for killing these people is basically a big 🖕 to the elite and in Tyler's case being a kissass
