Wow bringing memories of my youth preparing the 55 gallon drum the Kiawae wood prep and stripping the t leaf cleaning the luau leaf that's a lost art good to see you making Lau Lau in Utah I miss the old days the whole family would come to Waimanalo to help
Yes, the best part of Laulau besides teaching and keeping traditions alive was the gathering of a community. The whole ʻohana and neighborhood would be together. It reminds us of the Hawaiian proverb ʻAʻohe hana nui ke alu 'ia. No task is too big when done together by all. Mahalo for sharing Braddah Ronald. 🤙🏽
Kia ora from New Zealand. Lau Lau, beautiful. Im Niuean/Maori and in our culture we call that dish Palusami. I love your Big As Steamer, definitely big enough to feed the whole tribe, but you'll know ay, ya cant beat it cooked in the ground, Hangi / Umu / Luau, that earthy element, mmmmmmm. OMG, Y'all made me hungry, out to the garden to get some taro leaves, my turn to cook up The Taste of Home....Cheers Guys, All The Best.
I been in Florida for 8 years and been hunting for fresh luau leaves in the Asian stores. No place here has them. But I see we have taro on the sides of the roads every where here. The purple stems. I been thinking about cutting and cleaning the ones on the side of the roads lol. Looks ono!
Haha! It’s so hard when you don’t have access to the authentic ingredients like lūʻau leaf. I wonder if you can have them mailed from the farmer?? 🤷🏻♀️ Mahalo for your comment and being part of the 808 in any state ʻohana. 🤙🏽
Yeah you can order them and have them shipped but the shipping can be high because they basically have to be shipped overnight from Hawaii since they’re fresh. I have 2 dozen ti leaves arriving this Thursday so I can make a kalua pork roast for Memorial Day weekend guests. I ordered extra so I can freeze a bunch for later use. You might also check with flower shops in your area and see if they have any or maybe they can order them for you and the shipping might be less because they might order them from suppliers and farmers with larger orders of other items
Aloha Brad and Malia. Thank you for the awesome videos. Can you show how you fabricated your drum steamer...moved from mililani 7 years ago anfter 32 years and dieing for kalua pig and laulau...i think i can do this

Back in the 60s we use the 55 gallon drum, always. Is poi available in Utah? Can eat with rice too. We use butterfish. Taste good but expensive. Mahalo for sharing.
Mahalo for this. I live in Seattle and Tampa too and am curious how you make squid lū'au when you are in Utah. If you can please share how you make boneless chicken with gravy, ake and/or aku palu if you make your own, and maybe some Instant Pot recipes that you use. Mahalo for uploading. I enjoy your videos.
For the squid lūʻau, we have been lucky to find great Asian Markets that carry frozen squid or tako. Unfortunately, it’s not fresh here in Utah, but it’s still ʻono. You got us excited with your suggestions. We plan on sharing some of our favorite crock pot and Instant Pot recipes soon. Stayed tuned and please share our channel so others can enjoy it too. Aloha...is this the food grade drum with the heat resistant coating within the drum or is it the one without any coating? The reason I'm asking is because a few years ago I was going to make one but was worried about the coating/chemicals leaching into the food because of the heat. Lau lau's look ono!!! Keep up the good work.
I am sure this question has been asked before. How does the laulau properly steam when double wrapped in foil? Does it just instead steam in its own meat juices?
@@808inanystate2 One more question. Do you need to actually steam them then if the laulau's are steaming in their own meat juices in the foil wrap? Can you just foil wrap them in the foil and have them raised of the fire, say a gas grill on the non flame side or in an oven?
@@John-zf2ph yes you can cook them in an oven, or even authentically in an imu (underground oven). You could also use an instant pot/pressure cooker. The steamer has worked for us since we make so many at one time. 🤙🏽

We haven’t found ti leaves in Utah but a lot of Asian markets have fresh taro leaves. Someone suggested calling a florist for ti leaves.
