Aloha 🌴 Brudah. Hi you? I really enjoyed the Hina Mauka Rehab facility in Ohau Hawaii. One of the popular Authentic Hawaiian dishes I enjoyed was Pork a dobo & Lau Lau. Many blessings to you and your family. Free the 19 nations Mahalo 🤙
8 hours? Man that seems like a long time. I’ve always done 4 hours. I’m not familiar with the instapot…how is it able to cook the lau lau in only 45 minutes?
I absolutely LOVE the way you have done this site! I like the music, the way you present the recipes and the focus on the way to prepare them. On so many you tube sites, the personalities of the presenters are distractions rather than enhancements. It is so nice on this one seeing and hearing your brother also. Thank you! Great job! I love Lau Lau and your recipe is a great adaptation. But I have heard that Butterfish/Escolar has been banned in some countries including Japan as it may cause gastrointestinal problems and even death in individuals that are sensitive to its oily content. Maybe a shout out to this possibility should be included along with an alternative substitute. 🙏🏼
New cook and sub, here! The simple step by step directions, the calm background music, showing the ingredients and substitutes, everything was easy for me to understand and make. We moved to NM (military) and we miss home esp the food. Mahalo and awesome job, love it, gotta follow this channel 😋
Hello. Thank you for sharing Im filipino, and we have this dish called "Laing", its taro lvs, w/ Pork, Shrimp, Shrimp paste and cooked with coconut milk. Question, have you tried using coconut milk, boil the laulau for hours with cocinut milk, till soft and tender, instead of steaming it? You think it will work? Thank you. 👍
Ohhh Laing sounds really good! I'm gonna check out that recipe. I think boiling it in coconut milk will work as long as the leaves are cooked in it for longer than an hour. It's quite similar to the squid luau recipe.
@@OnoHawaiianRecipes traditionally we cook "laing" for 4 hrs, slow cook, Yes, I just checked the squid lauau, and I think its almost similar. Sometimes I do a little experiment myself on this already wonderful dishes specially with the same base ie taro lvs, pork seafood. Thanks for your reply👍☺
Thanks for your "how to demo for Lau lau". I've seen quite a few recipes on youtube and I keep wondering why that one item that I'm used to seeing never gets included, and that item is the salt salmon. I realize that there are many options as far as ingredients are concerned, but I got so used to seeing the salt salmon included way back in the day in old Haleiwa. I accompanied my mom and some friends in the early 50s when they were preparing to make lau lau. I was only about 7 years old at the time but distinctly remember the ingredients. The ingredients were 1 each large cube of pork, beef, butter fish, salt salmon and a sprinkling of hawaiian salt then wrapped in taro leaves, and finally in ti leaves. The different ways for making Lau lau that I've seen are all good. I was just curious why the salt salmon was never included in the recipes, guess I'm an old soul. God bless. Mahalo and aloha.
It could be old school. I havent had much laulaus with salted salmon. It could be because salmon is expensive in Hawaii since salmons need to be imported? Just speculation 😉
They are options for those who don't have access to kalo leaves. You could simply have the spinach cook along with the meat wrapped in foil. Collard greens are bitter but few are okay with it.
I’d have no patience to make this but looks really good... can the brother come over and make this for me? Lol 😝 I could cook som P. R. Food as a trade!
Get the recipe to make Wendel's 12 inch lau lau ? :P just kidding. but whats the other name for buttefish? i can't find anything under that name on the mainland
Bahahaha that's one hella big kau kau!! Too funny. Yeah you can find butterfish as black cod on the mainland. Or you can substitute it for salmon if you like.
Nice! Hope your lau lau comes out super ono! And yup i have a great recipe my aunty uses for squid luau. All my family swears by it haha I'll make a video on it some time in the future 😉
thank you for the 2 cooking options

can you use banana leaf instead of ti?
It should work
Question: Do you have instructions for doing this in a crock pot? How many hours? Thank you for sharing this delicious looking recipe.
8 hours? Man that seems like a long time. I’ve always done 4 hours. I’m not familiar with the instapot…how is it able to cook the lau lau in only 45 minutes?
For instapot. 45 mins at normal? Steam?
Steam.
Awesome! Alternatives for butterfish?
You could use any white fish like cod.
@@OnoHawaiianRecipes Mahalo plenty!!!
Sometimes my mother in law would put in some salted salmon. I love your videos.
Wow! I didn’t know you could cook this in your instant pot! So akamai! 👍🏼 thank you for sharing!!
Haha yeah! Instant pot is a miracle!! I'd rather cook it 45 min than 8 hours 😱😁
That's looks so good
One of my absolute FAVORITE foods!!! I would love to try and make this at home...but I don't think I can duplicate that magical Hawaiian perfection. 😏
Wow! This is art!!!

How many quarts is your Instant Pot? I was looking at steamers but like you said 45 minutes is a lot better than 8 hours! Mahalo!
It's an 8 qt instant pot :)

Collard greens are bitter and spinach is too small for wrapping not to mention non of them taste like taro leaves.
They are options for those who don't have access to kalo leaves. You could simply have the spinach cook along with the meat wrapped in foil. Collard greens are bitter but few are okay with it.
I've seen people mention using swiss chard leaves.
how did they differ in taste? there is 10qt IP out that would be able to steam more lualaus! great video!
There really was not difference in taste at all! Just the time difference 😃
