Boris hits self-destruct, Sturgeon gets nicked and the UK's Victorian abortion laws | Pubcast #7

  • On this week's episode of the Pubcast, we look back on the life and times of Alexander Boris De Pfeffel Johnson, after the former Prime Minister resigned as an MP in advance of the Privileges Committee report into whether he misled Parliament.
    Then we cross Hadrian's Wall after Nicola Sturgeon was arrested as part of the police probe into the SNP's finances. Comment below whether you think Ed is a Yoon or a Nat.
    Finally we reflect on the recent sentence of a woman for using abortion pills outside of termination limit, where the law used to sentence was from the 1860s.

    I tried to explain to my significantly better half that I don't simply watch rubbish on RUclips. I watch grown up and informative videos. 10 mins later I'm making dinner with this show on at the same time...she walks in and the subject of branding foreheads for free beer is the topic de jour. Thanks guys.

    Thank you for this- I totally agree about that poor woman- how was it ever thought in any way correct to put her in prison? Before I retired early due to recurrent burnout due to this toxic evil murderous government I struggled to get my patients the mental health care that they needed. It used to be relatively straight forward before the underfunding got so horrific. So either I saw and supported these people in the time I did not really have making my days unmanageably long and complex or they suffered.

    I do have to agree with Ava, not necessarily in her policies around abortion but around how public option seems to be skewed against abortion and even the pro choice lobby is a silent one a lot of the time. I have an opinion, I don't pretend to know if my opinion is correct nor do I think their is a correct answer or solution when it comes to abortion. As a man I just think it's a choice I will never be required to make on a personal level so any opinion I may have should not be given equal weighting to that of a woman who is ultimately the person on the end of any decision with regards to abortion. A sensible option would be to make sure the support and services were available so pregnant women can make an informed and safe choice whatever that may be. What the legislative framework or criteria is with regards termination limits or preventing any system being abused should be secondary.

    I think though that a prison sentence was harsh because she had mitigating circumstances of it being during lockdown but I’ve not read the judges statement. I’m not sure how justice is served by her actually being locked up but the conviction was sound.

There's no real way to argue that a baby that far along isn't a baby, what she did was barbaric. Frankly she should go to prison for the same length of time she would for a born baby.

      It is in fact destruction of a child, a 20th century offence, if the age of the law is a genuine concern. One with a harsher sentencing regime and one that was on the original charge sheet. I suspect the age of the law is actually a secondary consideration to any-term-abortionists.

That child which would have survived is she hadn't deliberately and coercively done what she did deserves a bit of justice. It had a nervous system and would of felt every bit of it. Besides, this “who decides, the woman or the state” rhetoric is idiotic on its face. Laws against abortion would not let the state decide who gets abortions any more than laws against rape let the state decide who gets raped. Instead, they establish that certain behaviors are so unacceptable they must be illegal.

    • @hollyrandomnumbers
      @hollyrandomnumbers Год назад +1

      I see your point but your analogy is flawed - an abortion is something one can choose to have whereas rape by definition can't. History shows that banning abortion means rich women and rich men's mistresses still get access whereas those without resources simply don't, thereby the state chooses which social class can have abortion.

    I've unsubscibed from this channel. These "Pubcasts" are so utterly puerile, and the swearing so completely gratuitous, that it is not possible to take them seriously. I just find my toes curling in embarrassment right from the very start. This is a shame because politically you have good points to make. I'll stick to Novara Media and Owen Jones. Adopting a stereotype that the right can label as "chavs" does not endear you to those seeking serious political argument and debate.
