I'll offer a slime tree story of my own. I had just started playing maplestory about a month prior on a warrior, and i came to learn how poorly i had distributed my stats so i needed a fresh start. i rolled a magician, and remembering the help i got from some high level (low 30s) players that had been super kind to me when I began, returned to the slime tree. it was a saturday in december of 2005, and the previous day in my high school japanese culture/anime club we had watched the Ah My Goddess movie. i was unfamiliar with the series but all that's relevant is that the main character is named Belldandy. while leveling in the slime tree, i came across a player with Belldandy in their name. i struck up a conversation asking if it was from that anime. jump cut to just about a year ago, she walked down the aisle at our wedding to Missing You. she is the most wonderful woman in the world and i am so lucky to have had her in my life for so long, and into the future as our adventures continue.
16:00 Zakum's basic lore was that he was a tree spirit, corrupted by the greed of the miner who uncovered him. He would then enslave the Miners and force em to deify him, creating a statue in his honor so that Zakum could possess it over his tree body. All the Zombies we see are probably the enslaved populace who died after brutal hours mining and building the Zakum statue, and having to worship him with no rest in sight.
i forgot that zakum is originally a tree! wheni i think about it its kind of weird he was never tied to the world tree storyline or something. being such an iconic piece of the game
Henesys Hunting Ground was also a popular spot for us noobs to loot after the pros who would be showing off their damage and leaving the monster’s loot. You would see a bunch of noobs running back and forth across the platforms spamming Z. I’ll never forget a time when a pan lid dropped from a green mushroom and there was about 5 of us noobs spamming Z and I ended up being the one that picked it up. 9 year old me was literally shaking 😂
Once again thanks for the nostalgia trip! One thing that was cool in HHG is a gimmick where you use an item while going over the rope to HHG2 so you skip the teleport prompt and could seat in that far away ledge. It was a pro move, and even more of a pro move to use pet food without a pet to not even waste items. In fact a good idea of video is to talk about maple gimmicks that would make us stand out from the crowd like this one! So many good things to tall about.
One thing to add is how the OSMS maps were a lot more interestingly designed. When down-jump wasn't and option, the maps had to be designed in a more clever way. Look at the old maps connecting the towns on Victoria island, or the maps in deep Ludi hell even around Orbis. I really started to notice how lazy the map design was getting when Ariant was released, every map around that town is just flat with platforms. Great for training, sure.. But so incredibly boring and lifeless.
I had some very fond memories of Alien Base when it was considered the "current" grinding spot. I remember waiting for a 2x EXP event in GMS and I had saved up some NX Cash for a couple 2x EXP coupons and I got from level 90 to 120 within an hour of 4x EXP and back then, that was considered blazing fast. It was so fast I legit forgot I was on GMS and thought I was on a private server.
But if tou remove the ambient, the music lost part of itself too. Visual art is so underrated in these maple comments... everything is just the game music...
Nobody forgets Ludi, the monsters in the towers were level 30-45 as well as inside the slide portal , everybody also went here to buy level 30-50 equips from shops
It's just so sad to see these small little snippets and be reminded that even though we got lost, we got frustrated. Even the quests were outrageous back then and almost unfair. It was these small areas that gave us a little bit of breathing room or added more Mystique to traveling alone in the game. That's what made old school pre Big Bang Maplestory so Memorable to many og players.
Highly recommend Revival Story for a true dose of MS nostalgia. Warriors with no accuracy remember grinding at slime tree and HHG, Mushroom garden, etc forever because you could actually hit stuff.
Kind of odd to title this video "most memorable locations" and constantly talk about how forgotten these places are. But other than this very small nitpick, I love this video and you as a person for covering so much of OG Maplestory.
They’re forgotten because most of us don’t play MapleStory anymore, but they are memorable especially because we played during the Golden Age pre Big Bang :)
As I've returned recently to the game, I've became very interested in content around Maplestory lore and characters, but for some reason there aren't any good videos on RUclips about it. I don't know if you ever thought about it, but I believe this kind of content fits well the format of videos you do and your storytelling. I would love to watch them! Anyways, great video as always! 🤩
I loved learning how to glitch up the rope in Henesys Hunting Ground to get to the little platform at the top. It was really fun to show off and a cute space to stand ^_^
I freaking love High Enough so much! Love that you mentioned it, it's so beautiful it almost makes me cry when I hear it BTW love your videos Togain-san
Man y'know, I've never played MapleStory in my life, but these videos about it does kinda have me tempted to check it out, seeing as it's still up and running to this day
Not a "hidden" map by definition but a memorable location for me is the hut outside the Henny FM. That's maybe not descriptive enough, it was a structure where you could jump and items would land ontop of the hut and you couldn't retrieve them. This spot was nearly occupied 24/7 by people throwing bad items/mesos up there and noobs (me) trying to jump and spam pickup to loot the items. I actually think maybeeeee you could reach the items if you had a hermit with max flash jump, and/or a mage with max teleport but one requires over 90 levels and the other is a skill not traditionally maxed for an optimal build
Eos Tower was almost a right of passage for Maplers. Like, you HAD to go through it all both ways at least once. But man, I spent a looooong time there hunting cards from the flying enemies. Finally seeing one drop was this huge accomplishment back before card drops became stupidly common. Never again will I hunt those cards. However, I will still use "High Enough" in my DnD. That's a good track for flying scenes.
I remember grinding the Aliens well beyond even 120 on an Angelic Buster, there was a map where she could get below them and grind them out completely safely, and especially given that combined with their very high base EXP, meant that there just wasn't a better grinding spot for a good while.
This is pure treasure content! Its like a detailed lore of my entire childhood. Thanks for putting the time to make quality content one after another! Definitely waiting for the next 🍄🟫
4:08 Something about the Missing you theme is that there is a song called Japanese Gum by the group Her Space Holiday, whose background track sounds very similar to one of the Missing you theme tunes, they in turn seem to have picked up the tone from an e-Lab soundpack called: Abstract Hip Hop. I always found it interesting to know how they made the songs for Maplestory.
I remember training at slime tree during one of the first maple events and a maple lama staff dropped and I was extremely happy..so much of a simple time...pan lid...maple shield..here's the thing. those times were massively appreciated because times were slow. nowadays things are so fast that you can get level 200 in a day. it's not the same feeling. to get 1 to 200 when 200 was so rare and all of the maps you'd have to go through were so memorable...the bosses, quests, friends...absolutely memorable. now most or all of those old maps are deleted..I don't know about you but I miss the iron hog, florina beach, Bob the snail, balrog on the boat, ludi Esther shield when ludi first was open..aqua road..party quests with people and making friends...now it's a solo game. maplestory was fun..but nexon killed itself off lol. quality over quantity. always. remember that.. well. on a side note, anyone here reads this and has been in Scania, if you've been in the guild Perpetual or know of it, leave a comment here please..
Recently, I've been playing on a PS and have actually been to every single spot you mentioned on this video for my training journey up till 60. I was actually grinding on the hidden spa this morning with my warrior to get fallen leaf earrings specifically for a friend lmao. I almost managed to get a Cao Cao bow, so, that means I gotta make an archer now. What an odd synchronicity
They really massacred the zombie maps back then, especially Z4. They added all of those platforms and steps. The maps instantly fell out of favor when the change happened. Wanted to slow down experience rates, KS wars, and so on? It happened, people just went to FoG instead. A lot of places you had to journey to hold memories in Maple. I remember being a warrior and traveling all the way to Drakes Meal Table. It is such a massive map with an irregular layout, but it just works for a warrior. I also remember doing some lazy training as an archer at Crimson Guards at the Crimson Wood Keep entrance since you could aggro them then use puppet to get to an area they can't reach.
It's crazy I wonder where some of my characters on my old account ended up because I'm sure they were in some of these areas last. EDIT: Checked in after years into Maplestory because of this video, one of my old characters is in Happyville still with the cartoonish Santa in the background and the portal at the top you have to transform and give snowpieces to trade-in for items from Santa.
I loved the Helios Tower Library, I would travel from Orbis to Ludi through Aqua Road just so I could stop by the library on my way. Since it was implied Korean Folk Town was inside a book I hoped there would be more more book towns to visit but it never happened unfortunately.
Early on with my introduction to maplestory, ~circa 2005 I really wanted to make a dexless chief bandit. Being super unfunded I had to grind my way at slime-tree from lvl 10-30. I didn't want to use double stab on Ellinia mushrooms or Sleepywood dungeons because it was super costly in mesos from pot burn. DOUBLE STAB WAS SO BAD!! And I didn't want to use lucky 7, I was strictly a bandit build.🥺 My main equipments was a unscrolled fruit knife and brown bamboo hat 😂 I had wanted to quit a many times on this character, It took 2-3 weeks of nonstop grinding whenever I could after homework. Nothing relives my training nostalgia like MP3 (Mysterious Place 3) in Singapore, killing Slimy and Selkie Jr. from the top of the limo at the bottom of the map!
Florina Beach is in MapleStory M still and now it is officially on PC through the Nexon Launcher. MapleStory M is basically Diet MapleStory however, but at least you can play Sia there (they need to make her for Real MapleStory).
I understand wanting to make Masteria more desirable, but I just can't imagine how they let those XP/HP ratios skew by that much. It always felt like the devs just never bothered to do the math. When this and the non-KMS maps having the Reboot meso bonus but not the HP scaling, I knew there was something really wrong with the development cycle since there was no way they didn't know how much of an issue it became.
about henesys hunting grounds, dont know if anyone mentioned it already in the comments but you forgot the glitch where you could climb the rope all the way to the top without teleporting to amoria. i think you had to drink potions while climbing in order to do that.
11:37 I'd say Military Camp 1 is the most popular of the maps in modern MapleStory, since it has the best spawn density and layout. Those levels are indeed a breeze nowadays, but I sometimes use them if I train mules. 28:50 Interestingly, there were two versions of Secret Factory: the one with Toy Trojans that spawned from boxes and a fake one that didn't summon anything from the boxes. I remember getting the fake map plenty of times. 31:40 Probably an unpopular opinion but I hated everything about the NLC Alien Invasion update because of how it dumbed down Masteria's maps and made a lot of areas inaccessible. The Alien Invasion plotline was also incredibly juvenile and poorly written, and definitely showed signs of Nexon being bitter about the original story + team behind it. The idea of the aliens themselves didn't sit right with me precisely because they made most 90 - 130 training maps irrelevant, and were incredibly imbalanced; it also made no sense that the aliens gave such high EXP given how quickly they nerfed Singapore and Malaysia after the Big Bang update, where the mobs were similarly broken. They did end up nerfing the aliens' EXP in the Unleashed update, and in early 2014 they reverted Masteria to its regular, non-destroyed state because of how unpopular the concept was (a rare thing for Nexon in all honesty), though they did keep the aliens around.
I don't know how to explain it but, the magic of exploration and questlines that brings you into unknown locations or hidden streets are just something I kinda missed, most MMOs todays they don't really hide or have tons of hidden stuff anymore because of plenty of Wikis or guides everywhere on any game lol. Eventually I do think if there was a game that could utilize AI to modify something to become a one time event or a legendary quest, it should be what AIs be built for.
@@petealwayslovesu this is why I won’t play any old school private server, I hope someone in Maplestory worlds can recreate classic maple for me to play on
