BIG ERN, this is the exact kind of content we want to see! Behind the scene and the life of a pilot!!! Waking up, travel, getting to work leaving, working out etc cockpit view is cool but we don’t see much, this kind of video we all want more of, we want to see the TRUE life of a pilot. Thanks so much big ern 🙏🏼🛩️
I once met an A330 pilot at a hotel near ICN who flew for Korean Air. He lived in Atlanta and Korean Air flew him to Seoul once a month for his duty, which lasted 10-14 days, then back home to Atlanta. He loved doing it.
I met one of your coworkers (of sorts), Chris in the last couple of weeks and I asked him to tell ya I love your content! He told me you are a totally really awesome dude and the same in real life as ya are in your vids... that is really nice to hear about you! I wanted to talk to him about flying a bunch but our schedules never matched up. Thanks, Big Ern/Captain for your content. You continue to inspire me!
Yep, Kauai is my favorite island. I go to Hawaii to relax and chill out. No need for a lot of tourist attractions or spectacular luxury resort for me. Give me a king bed room with a view of the ocean and room service and I can do the rest. Five days there to recharge the batteries beats two weeks anywhere else. Ok, it’s not the South Pacific but it doesn’t take a day and thousands of bucks to get there. It’s about as far away from the rat race you can get and still be in the US. Can’t beat it.
I have to make 2 observations here. This flight was on 11 August 2023 taking off from runway 25 Right. At 3:40, the smoke shown was a 3 alarm fire in the Glendale area off of 59th Street & Glendale Ave. If I remember correctly, it was a plastics recycling yard that went up.
YES.... I have been commuting to JFK from AUS for 20 years....and it sucks but I live where my wife and I call home. Having said that, i'd commute from Hawaii to the west coast in a heart beat! Love the chanel and seem to always recommend it to my friends who are new to the airlines!
My wife and I had our honeymoon in Hawaii 35 years ago. We were on a cruise ship that visited all the major islands. Kauai was my favorite! Very tropical and not many people.
Retired now. Never had to commute due to living in base. There was no place in the U.S., in which I would want to live, that would've justified commuting to my base in Texas. A pilot friend of mine commuted from MKE to EWR -- a one- or a two-leg commute (MKE - EWR direct, or MKE - ORD - EWR). He held 15 - 16 day-off lines, which gave him only about 6 hard-days off each month. A "hard-day off" was one in which he didn't go to an airport, all-day-long. That, alone, was enough to convince me to just live in base -- I was always "positive-space" in my car! 🙂
Hey Big Ern. Bumped into you before I was going through TSA Pre Check at LAS (Vegas). Thanks for being so friendly even though it was in quick passing! Keep up the great content! Big fan!
My wife and I stayed at Kauai Beach Resort back in March. Awesome place. Highly recommend. You are 100% right about the beaches. Cannot wait to go back.. Thank you for your videos. Really cool.
A commute from Aus would be 🤯!! I once met a Skywest pilot at SYD airport who was commuting. That day, he had been to two airlines already to find a jump seat.
I use to be in the JetBlue gateway program - one person who was in the program with me now lives in Hawaii but she commutes to start her trips on the east coast. To each their own :) Also, Kauai is the best- enjoy!!
Hearing the outside sounds reminds me of being in Maui during 1987. Some items you never forget... even in your late 60s. My wife is enjoying being in Beihai and swimming in the South China Sea with our granddaughter on their holiday week. Enjoying your videos as always and be safe.
Flew on your airline Wednesday, and will be flying home Saturday. Too bad your base doesn't put you in the front seat for my flights. The flights were good though! You guys are my preferred airline.
Commuting made me seriously question my life choices, but that was many moons ago and I'm sure its all better now. Thanks BE. Good on SWA for flying some Hawaii relief flights.
I saw that private 747 sitting there at Sky Harbor a couple days ago!! Got me interested and I remembered the tail number was A...looked that up and appears to be middle east? Ya, baller for sure!
It's so relaxing to see these videos..I sometimes get stressed a bit but I love airplanes and I just think it's so cool of you to share your trips...Thank you!
I commute from MCO to MIA/FLL/PBI for AA. Can be either the easiest or most complicated commute. Sometimes I do the 3 plus hour drive. Have to be creative when summer weather and loads go crazy. Wish we had a satellite base like our FAs do in MCO. Least I like having options if I can’t jumpseat.
Hey ERN kym from Adelaide you have earned this work life balance but seriously Mate do you ever pinch yourself to see if it's a dream LOL,all jokes aside mate thanks so much for taking us with you .Just a thought you could do a video with 74 gears Kelsie and we could do a tour of his 747 ,like you he is very entertaining . Cheers mate Kym
Awesome video as always! I'm from England but the fires in Waikiki etc have been all but forgotten by news outlets in my country. I guess this was filmed before the fires took place?
Love watching your videos Big Ern! Flying into KPHX from KCMH and then on to KSAN next month. Maybe I’ll see you at KPHX. I caught a C-5M on final at KFFO last week I like to share but I don’t know where to send it to.
I’m a big fan big Ern and I work by MDW and I had a retried captain visit my office and he tried to recruit/motivate me to try the pilot world and I mention you and he started follow you too sir.
Man should try a live stream, when you have like 45mins- 1hr of a layover and talk about the trip and answer some live questions for about 10-15mins or when you are home and want to do a video!!! That would be cool
I do know lots of people who live in Omaha do Airline Commuting a ton and some work for one airline and deadhead on another for time and price purposes and go to different places such as Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Dallas
One thing that I definitely find pretty cool is that if a company has pilots that need to commute on another airline, they just do, no questions asked.
G,day Captain "Big" Ern from Sydney Australia. It's been awhile, thanks for the LCD screen of GPS out to Hawaii. Do they still have VOR frequency navigation? You mentioned the commute for work, that puts pressure on with our gas prices of late $2.16 pL 🌏🇭🇲
Big Ern, thanks for another great video. As a new Private Pilot your videos keep me motivated for the brass ring. Do you know what other airlines have a commuter protection rule?
I just did the fight from LAS -> LIH on SW. I was wondering how the route was perceived by the crew. I know the long hauls are preferred but the crosswinds in LIH can be brutal. Also wasn't sure if it was a 2 day turn or 3-4 day with island hopping. It was my 2nd trip to Kauai I would agree the beaches aren't busy. I think I stayed at that hotel/resort for my honeymoon 8 years ago. The beach there is really nice pretty melo not a lot of rocks so great for kids and moderate swimmers. There's some pretty tranquil beaches on the north(princeville) and on the SE side where I assume you were. Our last day we stayed in Poipu on the south and the beaches were busier and were kind of two extremes either protected or partially protected so good for kids but if you got out into the surf I wouldn't recommend for even moderate swimmers (like shipwreck) but pretty decent surfing if you're into that thing. No were close to the North Shore in Oahu though.
Hi big ern. Love the videos. Been watching for probably a year now. Got my Principles of flight and mass and balance exams this week (last sitting). Any advice lol
Always enjoy your vlogs Big Ern! Always looking forward to your next one. I love the island of Kauai. My wife and I have been there twice and the beaches are not crowded like you said. Maui Strong!! Aloha!!
BIG ERN, this is the exact kind of content we want to see!

Kauai is beautiful. Marriott time share is the best

Thank you for sharing your trip here.
You made me laugh 😂!!! It is nice in Kauai there. I have done my trips there from LAX on the 757s.
My wife and I had our honeymoon in Hawaii 35 years ago. We were on a cruise ship that visited all the major islands. Kauai was my favorite! Very tropical and not many people.
Great video Big Ern! The scenery is beautiful, thanks for sharing!😊

Another fantastic video. Thanks again.
Flew on your airline Wednesday, and will be flying home Saturday. Too bad your base doesn't put you in the front seat for my flights. The flights were good though! You guys are my preferred airline.
Hi Ernie! Another great video! Can’t wait for the cockpit video from the repo flight! 😊🤙
Next time you are in the Honolulu area, I would love to meet you if you have time. I work at Hickam so I get to watch planes all the time.
The aircraft looks newer and the screens are large , must be a Max. Nice to see a new episode of BigErn.
Nice to see new vids after a while, keep em flowing👍🏾
More to come!
Great video! Thx for the ride and as a former airline emp well understand yr commute and standby challenges. ✈️
What happened to showing us the beach and sights along the way?
Commuting made me seriously question my life choices, but that was many moons ago and I'm sure its all better now. Thanks BE. Good on SWA for flying some
Hawaii relief flights.
Praying for Hawaii. It’s on my bucket list.

Hi big Ern,glad you are living the dream 😊
Commuting these days is at times can be very difficult. Big Erne hope you guys get you’re contract, you deserve it 🤞🙏
Capt Ern when can we expect the delivery flight vid?
Love watching your videos Big Ern! Flying into KPHX from KCMH and then on to KSAN next month. Maybe I’ll see you at KPHX. I caught a C-5M on final at KFFO last week I like to share but I don’t know where to send it to.
Hi Big Ern! Doesn't SWA has a schedule like 18on/12off for instance like some airlines for better Commuting? Thank you for this nice video!
I’m a big fan big Ern and I work by MDW and I had a retried captain visit my office and he tried to recruit/motivate me to try the pilot world and I mention you and he started follow you too sir.

Pretty baller commute hotel. Definitely not the LaQuinta!
it's good to know a pilot is on board in case of emergency etc
I guess I do not undersdtand what is better by what you did verse flying out of PHX? Bette rmoney, times, desitinations?
Big Ern, so glad to see another video. Be safe in the skies sir.
More to come!
I’m pretty damn sure I saw you and your FO walk by me in Waikiki the other day. You were on the phone.
Was I mistaken?
Where on the central coast? I grew up on the central coast.
Big Ern, thanks for another great video. As a new Private Pilot your videos keep me motivated for the brass ring. Do you know what other airlines have a commuter protection rule?
I’m a long-haul commuter, living in Oz and based in LAX. Just another DH leg really.
What sort of load factor are you seeing For the hawaiian trips?
I just did the fight from LAS -> LIH on SW. I was wondering how the route was perceived by the crew. I know the long hauls are preferred but the crosswinds in LIH can be brutal. Who do you contact for ATC......how does that work in the middle of the Pacific? Or is it satellite checkin?
Yes.
Keep the videos comming brother.
Will do
Hi big ern. Love the videos. Been watching for probably a year now.
Got my Principles of flight and mass and balance exams this week (last sitting). Any advice lol
thanks
74 gear pilots a 747-800 . Might want to get in touch with him. Beautiful area.
Lol 747 cargo is nowhere near a 747 VIP
Hi big ern you inspired me to be a pilot!
What hotel were you staying at on Kauai?
I want to know too!
Do you ever fly ETOPS out of PHX?
What does Green Horn ? or was it Green Hornet ? mean. I think the 747 VIP was the Qatari aircraft
Always enjoy your vlogs Big Ern! Always looking forward to your next one. I love the island of Kauai. My wife and I have been there twice and the beaches are not crowded like you said. Maui Strong!! Aloha!!
A 737 to Hawaii...oh joy.
How'd you get from Vegas to Oakland?
I know a captain for Korean air based in Seoul. He lives in Brazil and commutes to Seoul once a month to fly 777. He works about 15 days on and 15 off
Do you have to travel in uniform for your commute ?
Ern, if you ever fly into Honolulu and wanna grab a bite to eat or plane spot near the end of the reef runway... let me know!
Hawaii is operating normally?
Have you been sent to Maui recently?
What, No Fighting Sioux Banner in your man cave?
Have you eaten at Roy Yamaguchi's restaurant?
Ben
Not sure when this was filmed. I am sure it was pretty fires. Pls keep victims in your thoughts.
Curious why you were in uniform when flying as a commuter and not on duty?
That could be the Emir of Qatar 747-8 BBJ
That 747-8 is owned by Qatar. It flies under Amiri flight. Google Amiri 747-8.
You and Kelsey from 74 Gear should collaborate🎉
