Currently about 2/3 thru and it’s kinda soothing. Like a hang out chat where I don’t have to 100% pay attention but still get a lot out of it. So if you want to keep doing this style, I don’t hate it. ❤😂

Video was very good, I would have done the following at min 11. taking the heated plastic, starting at the crossgard wrapped twine around the plastic and blade to 1) secure it in place, 2) add a small thurmal barrier from where the heatgun is heating.

Dash it all; I missed another live stream by mere minutes. Watching the replay is fine, but I would have loved to watch it as it was happening. Edit: Nevermind, I was confused by the title. This wasn't a live stream, so I guess I feel a little better (but a livestream of a build could be a glorious opportunity for disaster and fun).

Love the video! While I do prefer the normal style, it's nice to have the longer form, end to end style of this too. Felt more personal and relaxed. Also, Maddy's face when she opened the knives was adorable. Full "Happy Murder Crow" vibes. Everyone needs a Maddy in their lives.

One of the local gamestores is also heavily into the costuming/cosplay side of things, their big suggestion for getting into thermoplastics is to get your hands on a pair of the ove gloves or similar, works great to keep your hands safe from any accidents and comfortable. There's also the little bit of cut resistance they add to your hands (though just because they're thicker woven gloves rather than any intentional thing there) is also good for working with things there.
Also, for knives and daggers, you can use a 3 layer leather build. Top, welt, and bottom piece. The welt is just a rim around the edges that provides an opening for your blade to slide into while the others face out and add a surface you can tool for the outside of it

    Awesome stuff as always!
A tip if Kydex is not an option you can make liner in raw hide. It's a bit more involved but works great as knife sheets/liner (I have used rawhide from dog chew bones from 100% ox or pig hide)

Do you have a harbor freight there? I bought a bunch of their magnetic strips and mounted a couple under my workbench so I just have to reach down to grab my scissors or other leather working tools. I even added a metal plate to my tooling tool case I made and just popped them onto the magnetic bar. Just a tip to keep things handy and organized. 😊

Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting knives are world class in their style, Good Choice. Best sheaths for a future build would be a dual small of the back flat sheath would lend to concealed carry under a cloak or garment. Excellent works of art and lethalness on both gifts

The Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife is a twentieth century invention, but I believe that any medieval fighter would thoroughly approve of it.
(Comment made while you’re still taping up the blade. I’ll probably have more to say after watching the whole video.)
EDIT: The knives are scary and the sword is awesome. Expecting cutting tests and stuff soon. Also, what, no closeups? Show off that craftsmanship!

  • @jamespreston7823
    @jamespreston7823 7 месяцев назад +1

Fairbairn ... basically Scottish for "pretty child"
the 'child' part (bairn) is pronounced as if your referring to an ursine creature
black, brown or polar... your choice... just stick an 'n' on the end of 🐻
sometimes it transmogrifies into something approximating 'burn' 🔥⚕

I dont know if you already happen to watch Alec Steele or not Cl3ver, but I heartily recommend checking out his kydex video :D he actually custom made a sykes like that and then took it to a professional kydex sheath maker's shop and did a tour of the process "How Its Made" style
Definitely worth a watch for future sheath projects :)
Edit: Just found a kydex press making video from Blue Collar Outdoors, so that may be helpful too :) (eventually I wanna try it out once I have a knife in need of a sheath)
And the robe of useful items would have had that pencil you needed 😜

I have not worked with Tyvek, but I've seen it on the youtubes elsewhere, and the most common technique I've seen is to soften two pieces and then use binder clips to hold them together along the edge of the blade/gun/cellphone. Cool, trim the flashing, then wrap the two halves together in leather/cloth/whatever, or rivet through the flashing for a more modern look.
I'm not sure if that's easier or will yield better results than your "melt and wrap" technique, but it might be worth exploring. I've also seen the same technique used to mold veg-tan tightly over a form.

    I think, technically, that's a scabbard?
Iirc, if it has a rigid core, like one made from wood, it's a scabbard, if it doesn't, then it's a sheath.

Me I would add a folded piece of sheet metal around the tip between the leather and plastic for safety and it would add balance weight to it to help keep it pointing down. And with forming the plastic next time use a old toaster oven than to shape it around something use two pieces of silicone rubber sheets thick enough for the part and two pieces of strong plywood and some weights or fast clamps to hold it together when it cools. You could wire wrap it too
