Hi Diego!!! Thank you. Sorry to hear about sourcing the tooling. Though I only made two tools shown in the video (undercut tool and edge beveler shown at end of video), you can make your own from scrap steel, and nails. I plan on doing a future video with some very detailed carving which will be using some custom tools I've made because they simply aren't available. Maybe I could do a separate video on making your own carving tools and cutters. Would this be of interest to you? Thanks again for watching!

Just a suggestion, if you allow me, in the edition of your video, you can put an image of the tool you are using at the moment. I mean just a still image in one side showing the pattern of the tool .
In the video you name the tool but I can't figure it out which one is(I have one "non branded" set of tools) just an idea. I'm subscribed to your channel and always watch your videos.
I can definitely place still shots in my videos of the tools being used. Should have thought of this before since many of my new viewers are coming in from around the world, and may not have the same name for their tooling. Thank you for the great suggestion and subscription to my channel.

You do nice work! I make many knife sheathes for a couple of knife makers here in Montana. One suggestion I would make is to use painters tape to the back of your carving pieces so the leather doesn't distort. I like the way you go about laying out your pattern. It is quick and simple. Hi Mike! I really appreciate the compliment coming from another leather worker! I never thought about stabilizing the back of the piece, thanks for sharing the tape tip. Quick question, when you remove the tape do you find that it pulls the flesh on some leathers, or do you skive it down to avoid this? Anyway, thank you for taking the time to watch my video.
@Twisted Oak Tape on the back of the leather piece is a common method to keep your leather square while carving. I've found it does pull some of the fibers when you remove the tape, but not too bad. Leather that has already been cut to thickness doesn't pull out as bad as leather that naturally has a lot of loose fibers. Using painters tape rather than other tapes helps with that too. Great work!

Beautiful sheath, compelling tutorial and wonderful workmanship. Just curious...if this sheath is a left horizontal mount, is the knife hard to get out of the sheath when needed? Thank you for sharing it's story...
Hi Robert! Good question. The sheath is versatile and can be worn in both directions on either side, or on the backside. Of course the tooling option on this sheath shows it most likely worn on the right. The only two factors impeding the ease of drawing the knife is the tightness of the sheath itself and the wings created at the top to keep the knife in place. I have a personal EDC knife with a similar sheath design which I've been using for about 10 years, and the blade can be drawn single handed fairly easy, yet still holds good retention. while making a sheath for the custom/clone Becker BK-2 I was making I wanted to have a firm knife retention without out straps and snaps and simple water molding works out nice for knives which stay in a drawer but not so much for a daily user when the leather softens and the shape goes away. I came up with an idea that to this day is still working and thought id spill the beans to everyone. What I did was I wet molded the shape as you would do normally but once the leather had dried out I coated the inside of the shaped areas with thin CA glue (super glue). Just a light flooding of the curved areas. Then used some tape and drew the shape just a bit tighter and allowed the CA to harden for a good while. I then lightly scuff sanded the inside to knock down any bumps or stiffened leather fibers and that was that. It turned the leather into spring leather! I have done this with success on several projects now. Be sure to run a test sample to avoid a real world surprise due to variations in products used.

It `s Magic. Your work inspired me to try my hands, what they are capable of. You'll have to overeat on a barbecue to ruin a couple of skins and wear out a bunch of metal and wood to create such a masterpiece.👍👍

So the entire process probably took me a little over a week to complete with the addition of shooting video. If I worked on it full time, I'd say about 2-3 days. There is a bit of a waiting period between casing the leather, drying the carving before color, and a few other intervals before starting each major step of the project. I try to not to rush the drying process of the carving and coloring because if either is too wet, you're going to get unwanted marks, or blemishes. Thanks for watching!

Amazing leatherwork, great video and narration. Definitely a master class performance. I missed one element, it looked like you free handed the stitching holes. How did you line up the opposite side so perfectly?
Hey Jeffrey! Thanks for the compliment. When stitching by hand I make sure to run the stitching wheel exactly from center on each side while following the stitch groove placed around the border, making sure to double check that the quantity of holes are exact for both sides. Once the marks are punched with an awl, and barge is laid down, I use extra stitching needles as alignment pins starting with one at the tip of the sheath, another near the middle, and one more near the top. As I work from the bottom up, adhering the glued sides, I'll use the needles as leverage to align the holes, and will leave the needles in place as I stitch. As I stitch down the sheath there are times the holes will fall out of alignment. When this happens I will use an awl to find the hole on the other side to help the needle through. Hope this explanation helped answer you question.

Where did you get the idea for that pattern? Amazing! And as I've said before, I really love what you are able to do using the airbrush. You have some of the original work I've seen.
Hey Mark! I've always toyed around with torn flesh patterns over the years. Created a lot of images in the past for t-shirts, CD covers, logos, etc. Just figured out a way to transition the idea over to leather and it seems to work out pretty well. The sheath in this video uses the pattern in smaller detail which I really like, but I've created bigger layouts with good results. Just depends on the overall piece being created and it's size.

Hi Deborah! Thank you! The band around the middle allows the sheath to be carried from either side as a cross draw. Just slide the belt through and the knife will ride horizontal on the hip.

Hey Patty! Honestly, I've just learned to work with it. Never really ran into any major issues with alignment and when I did, I just figured out a way to make it work somehow.

I really think this is one of the most gorgeous sheaths I have seen. Could you please tell me why most makers do not finish adding color ALL the way on the inside? It seems like such a small amount of stain left to add . To me it is like forgetting to put on some of your underclothes just because they are not seen. May there is a good reason I do not know of.
Hi Mary! Thank you. I think the main reason most makers leave the unseen portions uncolored is to save on dye usage.
Did you put tape on the back of the leather to prevent stretching? I'm out of tape and want to make a sheath but I don't want to make it and it be to big for my knife. Great job beautiful work bubba.
Hey Justen! No I don't use the tape technique. I used it once and hated how it pulled the flesh side of the leather when removed. I've learned to adjust and work with any stretching which may occur during the carving process. Thanks for watching!

Thank you, Johnny! Total time was a little over the course of a week. Shooting video clips extends the build process. I can usually have a sheath like this built within 5 days working a couple hours each day. I like to let the leather sit over night when casing, after finishing the carving, and coloring. If I had to rush a deadline, probably could have it finished, and out the door in 2 days. Thanks for watching!
Amazing sheaths! I have a buddy that says if you use diamond punches to make your sheaths dirt will get into the holes and rot the tiger thread. He also says you have to use a double wrap locking saddle stitch knot on every stitch. After I make a sheath, the holes are still kind of visible because I use punches. He uses a tiny handmade awl, and his stitches sit right next to each other. Do you think he is right, or do you think it's overkill to go to that much effort stitching? Hey Evan! Personally speaking I rarely use the diamond shaped stitching chisels simply because of the hole size they leave, and they make hole alignment a challenge. The locking saddle stitch is worth the effort and ensures if the thread breaks along the stitch line the rest of the loops are held in place. I don't think dirt is the real issue in regard to rotting the stitching but is most likely due to moisture, and oils soaking in the leather. Thanks for watching.

Sorry for the delayed response. The edger in question is often called a "Keen Edge" beveler. It has a rounded radius on the cutting side. I have also made my own out of tool steel and allen keys because some of the higher grade tools are a bit expensive. It's possible I may shoot a short video in the near future on making some of the custom leather tools I use.

I’m rounding 9-10 ounce buffalo. Do I get a number three or a number four? I don’t need a gigantic radius just a nice dress on the edge.
I’m good with buy once cry once here. Tandy has a few options. Their offerings are not expensive. It’s good enough? Weaver has one that is a lot more expensive but I’m not sure the added expense is required. I’m using Weaver for my buffalo. (Great stuff btw- could make a leather frisbee if I wanted)

Thank you, Fosfo! This sheath can be carried horizontally on either side. The belt slips through the loop that wraps around the sheath. If this loop is too loose then the sheath will flop around. Too tight and the belt may not feed through.

how long does this take to create from start to finish roughly out of curiosity?
I would say most sheaths like this probably take me a total of 4-5 hours straight. However, the time frame is normally spread out over 2-3 days when I'm pushing to hit a deadline. I like to let the leather case overnight and dry for at least 12 hours between carving, and coloring.

Hi Russell! Thanks for the critique. I use a similar style sheath with an EDC that I made a few years back. Once the sheath is broken in it draws real easy and still has great retention.

good job tapering the tang,you don't see that often enough! most knife maker don't get the blade heavy balance of a knife! why all the leather all up around the handle of the knife ? guess it will never see action in the weather ?
You noticed the taper? Excellent awareness. Most customers and even some makers don't pick up on tapered tangs. Honestly, I can't even look a tang left full thickness. I have a strong distaste for such designs.
Handle is wrapped high because there is no strap. It's molded around the handle to act as a keeper and yes, it will probably never see action in the weather.
