I started leatherwork in the mid nineteen eighties because I had a bunch on nice knives with crappy sheaths. So I have been doing leatherwork for the last 27 years or so. For the last twenty-five I have been doing a lot of medieval type leatherwork although I still do modern stuff. Primarily as a hobby although I will occasionally make something for sale. I know this is long winded but it hopefully tells you I know a bit about leatherwork. I find your work top notch. You tooled the back of the sheath. (Al Shelton who made leather products for the rich and famous (such as Gene Autry) would decorate the inside of his belts because if your paying for custom work it should show.). Anyone who sees this sheath will know it was hand crafted. You hand sewed the sheath. Once again showing your interested in making the best sheath possible. And while I know and do most of what you showed I learned a bit from you about using the paints and antiquing. I know that his is a bit long winded but hopefully others less versed in the mysteries of leather will read it and be moved to subscribe and like to improve their own leatherwork
Hi Peter! Well, I'm at a loss for words. What a great compliment, thank you very much! You have about 15 years on me so I'm sure you've seen or delved into the production of many sheaths like you mentioned. I'm happy you were able to take away something from the tutorial as I tried my best to reach out to the beginner through advanced, even though I am still trying to improve my skills, and techniques myself. I believe (I assume like you), there's no room to cut corners in the search for quality, especially when trying to produce heirloom pieces like I try to do for my customers. There's been many times I've had to restart a piece due to a slip of a tool or misplaced measurement, when it would have been easy to just let it go. Speaking of medieval leatherwork, it's always something that has interested me, just haven't had a chance to indulge in this style of the craft. Once again, thank you for watching, and the great compliment!!!
I am 60 and just started in leathercraft and i have found a lot of inspiration from different channels here, but Twisted Oak is my favorite. He does top notch work. Great carving..I need to get a lifter for my outlines!
Wow! Thank you, William! I'm happy to hear my channel and video has given you inspiration toward the craft. Hopefully my upcoming leathermaking videos will provide the same for you.
I'm also a leather crafter for about 3 decades now, and it continues to facinate me how a simple piece of leather can be transferred into something so beautiful
This was an incredible example of expert craftsmanship. I'm 64 and am a beginning leather worker. I am retired and unfortunately have developed a tremor in my hands. I was a metal fabricator and welder and wanted to expand my repertoire to include leatherwork. You have inspired me to attempt the trade. Hope I can attain some craftsmanship. Appreciate your work. Cheers.
Thank you for the compliment, Sir! I'm sorry to hear about the stability with your hands, yet quite impressed with your perseverance to not let it stop you from entering a new trade. I think you enjoy leather crafting as there really is no limit to what can be created. Thank you again for watching my video and hope the tutorial helps you hone some new skills for the craft.
im 62 with severe arthritus in my right hand , my lower back and neck from many years of Carpentry, detailed wood work . im still doing detailed wood carving , and scroll sawing and now LEATHERCRAFT. i refuse to allow pain to stop me from what i love doing . like the rest of you , i simply deal with it . to me in our elder years weve learned patience and perseverence . I will not quit until im forced to . im doing some of the very best work ive ever done . Thank You for the FANTASTIC videos of your work , it inspires us all .
To say the least, you are a true craftsman! I did not see you make the knife but it is beautiful. Though your leather work is AMAZING! The artwork is unmatched by anyone I have seen. What a joy just to watch you work.
Having had to give up my career in my mid 40s a few years ago due to a spinal injury, I've been stuck in limbo not knowing which way to go with my life. It's videos like this which have given me the inspiration to rediscover my creative side, (which, for some reason, disappeared a couple of decades ago), and get into leatherworking. Once I'm more skilled I'll start tooling, airbrushing and maybe even old knife restoration.
NGF, thank you for the wonderful compliment. I'm sorry to hear about the injury and impact it has had on your life. Glad to hear my video has given you inspiration to move forward into leather working. It's a great trade and hobby. I think once you begin honing your skills you'll really enjoy it!
As a novice at leatherwork i have to say that I'm thrilled to have stumbled on to this video! I only hope to be this good one day. For now i will probably watch this several more times to glean every bit of info possible from it. I am hopeful to make a similar sheath for my brother as my next project and this is my inspiration to do that!! ❤❤❤
After watching these videos I feel like getting back into leather work. I made quite a few knife sheets and I also made the blades. I only made about five holsters. The holsters then I made did not look as good as this man's. I love videos like this.
Absolute eye candy I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and dive into tooling . Your tolling and special affect buy lifting the leather is special could be it's been out there for ever just really never seen it before . The sheath I can build no problem but never had the guts to try the tooling but now it is going to happen . I have every thing I need been collecting tooling tools for years, and the different colors your using just amazing I do have the little sprayer I pick up at a garage sale I do use it for accent colors . As the the swivel knife you used to do a preliminary cut I do the same but with a highly polished awl just tilt it down a bit and trace leaves a very nice channel for the knife to travel in . Great work very glad I found your channel life time member know . You really made this 79 year old fart a happy guy today . Stay safe and happy Trails .
Hi Mike! Thank you for the compliment, much appreciated. Like you mentioned, lifting/peeling the leather has been out there, you just don't see it as often, or perhaps to such effect. The custom tool I made from a screw driver happened by chance as I was looking for a way to make deeper undercuts. With the airbrush, you can't go wrong spraying dyes with this tool. It has so much greater control over using a wool dab, or brush. Though, I should confess that I have a fine art background, and did airbrush illustrations/murals for a period of time, so using this application on leather was a natural transition for me. I like the idea of using the the polished awl and may have to practice the method (thank you for sharing). I think it's great to be able to share processes and techniques with other makers as it helps all of us better our craft. I want to say thank you for the subscription and your interest in my work. I should have another leather sheath tutorial uploaded, hopefully within the next week, so stay tuned.
@@TwistedOakHandmade There was one more thing I do ,I use and end mill to counter bore all snaps and anything thing that needs to be dropped below surface level so the patch is exactly surface level. It might seem dangerous to some holding down a peace of leather by hand while doing this with an end mill not saying that 50years as a tool and die maker helps but you do know what to look for it really gives a clean look and is quite easy you just need to take your time . I could tell you had an artist touch with the swivel knife . I do watch Bruce Chaney the Texas saddle maker he is also quite good at tooling . you are an artist for sure me not so much but I am going to give it a shot .Also the hint on using the orang or red pi quit clever I like that un wanted pen lines a a real bitch to hide. You know, the thought of using an end mill to add relief for snaps/rivets has crossed my mind. I just never pushed forward with the idea because I keep my machining area and tooling covered with a film of oil. My shop isn't insulated so I have to protect my equipment from condensation during extreme temp fluctuations. Still, I appreciate you sharing the tip, and will definitely give it a shot in the future. Bruce is a Master! If I was only half as good... Once again, I'm glad you were able to take away some useful tips/techniques from my video, and thank you for sharing some of your's with me! Best of luck and have fun with your carving!

Hey Blake! Thank you for the compliment regarding the detail in the video. My goal was to try and create something both beginners and advanced would enjoy. Hi. As an amateur i´m just working for the first time in my life a sheath and it is for my friend. He asked me to make a new sheath for him because the old one was broken. I principally make leather cuffs, phone cases...etc. It is almost ready. It is a " traditional " sheath. Your´s is very beautiful and i will try to make next time like yours, for my self. It is nice to watch when a professional makes something and you learn always something new. Usually i don´t care to listen music in the background, but your music choices for this video fits like a glove. Thank you.
Well thank you for the compliment, Risto! Glad to hear you learned something from the video. I understand some music may not always be to everyone's taste so I try create my videos with sound tracks intended to inspire creativity based on what the video is showcasing.
Thank you, Lee! Unfortunately I've been inundated with the full time job but I'm gearing up to make another sheath project. Been trying to think of what to cover in the video so maybe I'll focus on more of the airbrushing.
AMAZING Artistry!!! I am new (6 months or so) to leather working and have watched many you tubers to learn from. You, my friend are unparalleled in your craftsmanship. I'm 62 and looking to have a hobby that I can share with my grandchildren when I retire. Thanks for the inspiration to continue to grow and improve in my craft.
I don't know I will ever become as skilled as you. But this looks like such satisfying work! I think I'm going to start with a sheath for my cold steel shovel. Lots of room for designs. Thankyou for this awesome video and most of all thank you for this inspiration!
Fantastic The tutorial, visual and voice balance. The craftsmanship, cinematic. I am really thankful for this. These videos are perfect. Heck of a guy.
I am 73 and a beginning leather worker. I don't know if I have enough years left to get even close to your ability, but I sure enjoy working leather. You sir are an fantastic. Thanks for this great video. You wanted to know if there was anything we didn't like? Nope.
Wow, thank you for the great compliment, Keith! I think you'll be surprised by how quick you can learn the craft. Don't be afraid to make mistakes along the way and you'll progress quickly!
Don't be afraid to try a technique and make mistakes, and you'll surpass 50% easily. Let me know if there is a part of the process you want to see more detail on.
Hey Price! I really appreciate the compliment. Never thought the tutorial would be such a big hit. Just wanted to show some of the more creative aspects of custom carved sheaths. Thanks again. Cheers!
@@TwistedOakHandmade I shared it in my Facebook group and it was well received. Thank You, can't wait to see more of your productions. They are clear and concise!
Well, thank you very much for sharing! I'm hoping to have my next leather sheath project out within the next 2 weeks. Hopefully it will be well received like this one.
Good gosh man!!! That’s the most intricate build I have seen to date!!! Amazing craftsmanship!! Congratulations on that God given gift sir!!! Beautiful work!!!
Hi Will! Thank you for the compliment and kind words. I tried my best to show all aspects of the build. Hopefully in the future I'll have better camera equipment so I can include some micro shots. Thanks again for watching!
Thank you, Dj!!! Out of all the mediums I've sprayed, I find alcohol dyes at the top of my list when it comes to transitioning between transparent to opaque densities in regard to their application. I hope this video helps you hone your skills. Let me know if there is something you'd like to see more of and I'll try to include it in my upcoming videos.
Nice job on sheath. It is truly a piece of art. Loved your attention to detail in tooling and staining the sheath. Also, thanks for providing the tool name and designation. Your presentation was excellent. Thanks!
Beyond the craftsman is the artist. Thats a masterpiece by anyones measure. Thank you for showing how you did your coloring. I havnt seen it demonstrated before and wouldnt have known where to start. You set a high bar for the rest of us to strive to. Thank you sir. You have my sub.
The difference between an artist and a craftsman is in the overall detail and ascetic of the end product and you sir are an artist! I really enjoyed watching this.
Wow! I've recently been inspired to get into leatherworking as it's been a life long hobby of "I wish I could do that" I'm currently looking into the tools and leathers to buy and get started, having a strong art background this is exactly how I envision my pieces I'd like my first to be a tapestry for my wall. Perhaps a bit large but it will be a labour of love. Thankyou for letting me whisper to myself "omfg I love this" repeatedly through the entire video dude!
Haha, thank you for the awesome compliment, and giving me a chuckle with the whispering self talk comment. It's exactly how I hope my videos inspire viewers. Thanks for watching!
Your work is amazing , It should be placed inside a container covered with glass. And make it a museum to display this wonderful and beautiful art. I have never seen such wonderful art Like this in my life. Frankly, I cannot put a financial value on this beautiful art
Gorgeous work as always. Simply stunning work. A trade that's still going but also losing ground. I believe if taking an animals life that nothing goes to waste.
Thank you, Kymmberlie, I appreciate the compliment. Many of the old, handcrafted, trades are meeting challenges in today's digital society. But I believe this new generation of makers are bringing light to what many consider lost arts.
Wow! This is the most entertaining, educational video! Thank you SO VERY MUCH! You are a true arts and Craftsman. Thank you for the trick of the screwdriver to lift the leather. I would love to know how you made it. The dieing of the leather and the leafs was so incredible to watch. Again thank you for making such an awesome video.
Hi Yawan! Thank you for the compliment and kind words. Glad you liked the modified screw driver trick. It's really simple to make, just take any old, medium sized screw driver, and take it to a bench grinder. Grind the end off and give it a slight rounded curve, around a 45 degree angle. You want to push the screw driver into the grinder hard enough to cause a burr on the tapered end. After this take the tool to a medium grit sharpening stone to hone the edge and strop it to a polish.
Dude your work is fantastic! I was shocked when I saw how little views your videos have. Keep up the good work, your work is far better than your current viewership gives you credit for. I like how you don’t just show leatherworking or blacksmithing. Your a maker, and I’ll always have a lot of respect for that. I do a lot of leatherworking, but I’ve never tried tooling. I’ll have to give this a try!
Hey Andrew, thank you for the kind words! Just started the channel so it's still going through some growing pains. Reflecting on your comment about being a "maker" really made me think about how all the skills and materials transition into one another. I started with knife making which lead to leather working. Wood turning just evolved from finding materials for knife handles. I really enjoy it all. Best advice is don't be afraid to try new skills or mediums, as they help round out your skillset, and don't let mistakes deter you from enjoying what you make... it is after all, part of the learning process. Thanks again for watching!
This tutorial brought a surge of happiness to me. Studded with a few gems, your work would have been fit for a king! You are truly a master craftsman in your trade. Leatherwork has always had a special place in my heart, although my fate would have me work in other fields. Kudos to you!
I think you did an excellent job! I like how you show the entire process from start to finish! Truly one of the best videos I've seen to date (best produced and edited as well as content). Great job all the way around I didn't want to miss a minute of your work/instructional video. This is a great way to share your art. Well done! I watched a show about what it takes to make a saddle for a horse and they show a little about how to make a show saddle with the skills you used to make a sheath. They get good money for the ornate "show saddles" they make. I wish you well and hope success follows you!
Hi Bradh74! I appreciate the compliment and the fact you watched the entire video. I'd love to work alongside a saddle maker one day and learn the process, really because I just want to carve up such a large piece. Many of the processes are the same throughout leather making but saddles are in a game of their own. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, the production and editing are great, and only add to the freaking awesome craftsmanship demonstrated. It takes an industrious and conscientious attitude to become a craftsman. It's a process of near-constant attention to improving one's techniques, methods, and tools (not constant-- everyone has some bad days when just getting through the day is a struggle).
Hot damn, you are really good at leather carving. Thank you for the tricks. Hahaha that was just the beginning of the video, you are a really skilled man.
New leather worker and real love the idea of a removable belt loop, would have never thought of that. Also, I really like your use of the air brush. Just Wow. I have to learn that wonderful trick.
That was amaising, very impressful technic. Greatful. I had just start to work with Leather Art and had some little projects finished. But I must say: That was a big motivation for me to try coming close to your quality. Thank you for that video. Greetings from Germany
I try to make what I don't have...at least within my capabilities. I'm actually working on a video right now on how to make a round edged beveler. Hopefully I'll be posting within the next week. To answer your question, probably a stitching machine, and a few more high end stamps for carving.
Thank you! I have a few leather working projects coming up in the near future. Let me know if there are any processes you'd like to see more detail on and I'll be sure to include it.
Very Impressive! What a fantastic sheath and detailed video of the whole process. I appreciate your break down of how and why you made certain decisions during the video. I need to experiment more with an airbrush for use with leather dye. Thank you for a great video!

The difference between an artist and a craftsman is in the overall detail and ascetic of the end product and you sir are an artist! I really enjoyed watching this.
Thanks for the awesome compliment, Tim! Much appreciated.
Awesome video man, I'm making a sheath for a Bowie right now and this gave me some ideas. Cheers!
Glad to help with the inspiration! Thank you!
Enjoyed your video, just getting started by watching video's. Thanks for sharing,
Thank you, donna! I hope the tutorial helps you with the craft.
Beautiful work! Definitely earned my subscription.
Such precision and talent
Thanks again for the kind words, Greg! Much appreciated!
Your work is amazing , It should be placed inside a container covered with glass. And make it a museum to display this wonderful and beautiful art. I have never seen such wonderful art Like this in my life. Frankly, I cannot put a financial value on this beautiful art
Thank you, Sammy, for the wonderful compliment!
SWEEEEET!! Nice craftsmanship!!
Hey Dean! Thank you, I appreciate it!
Really nice work with the colouring! Great job!
Thank you! Glad you liked the project!
Awesome ! You have some strong skills. Good job mate
@@TwistedOakHandmade thank you so much for sharing this with me! I really appreciate it.
Wow!! You do amazing work
Thank you very much!
Unbelievable work and awesome tutorial! Im just starting have only made 6 or 7 rudimentary sheaths. I can only hope to reach your level...
very talented! very insperational! absolutley beautiful!
Thank you so much!
That's so BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you, Kien!
This tutorial brought a surge of happiness to me. Studded with a few gems, your work would have been fit for a king! You are truly a master craftsman in your trade. Leatherwork has always had a special place in my heart, although my fate would have me work in other fields. Kudos to you!
Thank you, David! Much appreciated!!!
Man, that is some beautiful work!
Hot damn, you are really good at leather carving. Thank you for the tricks. Hahaha that was just the beginning of the video, you are a really skilled man.
Thank you, Troy! Much appreciated!
New leather worker and real love the idea of a removable belt loop, would have never thought of that. Also, I really like your use of the air brush. Just Wow. I have to learn that wonderful trick.
Thank you, Mark!

That was amaising, very impressful technic. Greatful. I had just start to work with Leather Art and had some little projects finished. But I must say: That was a big motivation for me to try coming close to your quality. Thank you for that video. Greetings from Germany
Just brilliant work. I really enjoyed that.
Thanks, Peter! I appreciate the compliment!
Absolutely love the video and really interesting watching the sheath come together .a beautiful piece of work.👍
Thank you, David! Glad you liked the tutorial. Cheers!
Is there a single tool you wish you had that you do not own? It looks like you have anything your heart could desire.
I try to make what I don't have...at least within my capabilities. I'm actually working on a video right now on how to make a round edged beveler. Hopefully I'll be posting within the next week. To answer your question, probably a stitching machine, and a few more high end stamps for carving.
Yes, you buy a leather working kit.
Beautiful Video you are a great Craftsman and a “Artist.
Hi Imarmass! I appreciate the compliment. Thanks for watching!
absolut amazing. Thanks for sharing this. Hope to see much more leather working. Great Job

Very Impressive! What a fantastic sheath and detailed video of the whole process. I appreciate your break down of how and why you made certain decisions during the video. I need to experiment more with an airbrush for use with leather dye. Thank you for a great video!
