Watching these videos puts me in touch with my blacksmith ancestors and brings me back to my days in a metal fabrication shop in the late 1980s.
I made a very crude hand and a half sword there but no longer have it.

Regarding the popped caps, what I see on other channels is drilling a little hole in one corner of each cap. Then no worry about pressure blowing it out. Nice blade, and I like that you offer commentary unlike most other similar video makers.
I like the cap popping off because it makes for easier removal afterwards
Decoration and light use only. Copper will NEVER properly fuse to steel to create a reliable, strong weld. Under force/pressure, this blade will separate. Not taking anything away from this guy or his skills. It does look great!!
The force needed to break apart the bond is much more than you woudl ever produce cutting food.

Just found your videos, and I'm the 7+ years I've been watching knife making videos and Forged In Fire, I've never seen anyone do the end press for can damascus steel, which makes perfect sense to me. Is that something you thought up, I'd bet your knives are better than anything they've had on that show. The last time I did any blacksmithing was over 10 years ago, but I've learned something great from you. Keep up your great work. 👍
Its hard to do. I have a very low success rate because its easy to pinch the can. If i pinch it the billet gets trapped inside and i still have to cut it out. But the white spay paint makes all the difference in removing the billet from the can.

Those are actually not cracks those are voids from losing copper, I have felt with that from experience prior to my first successful cu Mai! Cu Mai is delicate dance of heat and forging! Great job turned out good
That makes sense. Most of my Cu Mai turn out okay. Occasionally ill have a problem but over all it works out

if you put a small piece of scrap copper on top of you billet while forgin you can tell if the copper inside you billet is molten if the piece on top is melting, and prevent blowing molten copper al over the place

JP, I have made some twisted cable damascus back in the day. One of the things we always struggled with was the heavy amount of grease that is packed inside the wire rope. There is usually some kind of fiberous/cloth material in the interior that is packed with grease as well. I think it is designed to wick up the grease as it heats up. As a consequence we always had trouble with voids. If you have an ultrasonic cleaner, maybe a bath of Simple Green and 30 minutes getting the hell vibrated out of it before you give it the spa treatment in the acetone.
Anyways, you may not have trouble with the voids and inclusions, but if you ever do, try looking into that.
Also, I wanted to say, the final product looks sweet.
Thank you for the advice. Ive had tons of trouble almost every time ive tried doing cable. Thats why i always end up putting it in a can vs heating and welding the fibers like others do. I think it also has to do with the size of my cable. Its small. Ive seen others using way bigger cable. Regardless im glad it came out cool looking in the end.

You cant learn without screwing up a couple of billets. Ive done so my self on many occasions 😅
The wave going thru is actually the steel reheating due to the crystalline structure changing. The term is descalescence.

I understand you’re a hobbyist but I would suggest you go with a full tang with your blades. Anyone who loves knives usually prefers a full tang for strength and stability.
It just depends on the amount of steel i have left over. I dont always have enough. I make the steel first then i figure out what i want to make from it.

I have seen some folks drilling in a small hole/vent on the top of their canisters, not sure if that's something you have tried to prevent your canisters from popping.
Its done to release pressure from the gasses created in heating the canister. I dont drill a hole but i leave holes in my welding to relieve that pressure.
Or can i have you make a similar kitten knife such as that ! It is extremely sweet looking blade !
I might make a kitchen knife in this material in the near future since i still have some cable left over.
That came out great! I wonder if there is an acid that would be able to eat away at the copper so it lays just slightly under the surface which might make an interesting look. If you can achieve this maybe you can patina the copper @Max_Randolph_Studios has a video testing different ways to patina copper for his iron oak project. Just an idea to play around with.

Ferric chloride should eat the copper that’s what we used to etch circuit boards when I was in school
Next time you make a bullet like this soak in ferric chloride in one minute increments til you get it the way you want. Might also then soak in espresso coffee overnight that could be cool combo etching.

Very nice. I just wish other makers would split those wood blocks. You could make 2 knives instead of 1 and a bunch of sawdust.
For full tang, i slpit them to 3/8 sheets. For hidden tang i prefer to keep thick incase anything is out of square. Its easier to shave material than it is to add back on.

Why is the tang so small. Just my opinion the tang should be the whole length of the handle for proper balancing
It depends on how much steel i have to allocate to the handle. Sometimes my math is off and the tang is a little smaller than i would like

Not sure. Exactly like this around 500 usd. Id have to check if i even have the materials to do the outer cladding.

No because the core steel is whats keeping the main integrity of the knife. The copper also brazes the steels together creating a strong bond. Much stronger than the force you will exert on a cooking knife.

Yes but it doesnt affect the knife since the only part of the knife making contact with anything hard would be the hardened blade edge.

The copper doesnt do any of the cutting so it doesnt need to hold an edge. The core steel is what does all the cutting and it is a high carbon core

Its just white spray paint. But it has to be white to work. Works just like liquid paper but is easier to apply
