Makes me realize how faithful the EMH portrayal of Hulk actually is. He was always decently articulate, just understandably grouchy, and tenuously affiliated with the avengers.
I love how he butts into the team formation with “I want in” after fighting them earlier in the issue. It’s such a Hulk thing to do. Hulk doesn’t care about grand ideals or story conventions, he’s here because he decided to be- not that he thinks very highly of you, and he won’t hesitate to tell you plainly. But he’s still as much a hero at the end of the day, he won’t let innocents get hurt. Because as much as the world rolls the green guy, he just can’t forget the old moral compass.

You know what I just realized about this comic? I think the original intention of the artist was supposed to be that, during the scene where the Hulk helped the train survive a fatal crash, the train operator was supposed to be actually grateful to Hulk (probably specifically noting how he must have been quite strong to hold up train tracks, to let a train cross over safely) and invite him to join the circus.
I can only guess that the person who wrote the dialogue either didn't care enough to flip through the book first before writing the dialogue or failed to draw the connection between the Hulk saving the train and then suddenly being an act in the circus.

The real reason for creating the Avengers was that Bill Everett was late in completing art for Daredevil and as Marvel needed something to fill in the required gap, Lee called on Kirby to produce a story featuring the already existing super-heroes who weren't already in a team (namely the FF) or who Lee decided to keep separate (namely Spider-Man and Dr. Strange). As they weren't introducing any new characters for the story that meant time didn't have to be spent designing any of them so Kirby could go right into drawing the story once they'd figured that out and Kirby was already legendary for being a quick artist. Thus, the Avengers made their debut several months before DD. Initially, Lee had been ordered by his boss, Martin Goodman, to come up with variations of the already successful Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, and the results were the X-Men and Daredevil, originally both scheduled to debut on the same month. As it was, X-Men #1, also drawn by Kirby (he could draw fast!) arrived on the stands in the same month as Avengers #1, along with the latest issues of the FF, Journey Into Mystery featuring Thor and other comics drawn by Kirby, while that first issue of Daredevil finally came out about 6 months later.

It is pretty ironic that Avengers exist and are super popular now precisely because they weren’t popular in the beginning. The whole Avengers book came about because Lee & co wanted to have a book for all the less popular characters who couldn’t support their own book so he created the Avengers. Then when MCU began, all that Marvel had left to use for it were the various Avengers characters because they weren’t as popular and thus had either not been optioned for other studios to use in films or their rights had reverted back to Marvel because no studio had wanted to make more films about them. I guess this goes to show that even the least popular characters can have potential to become favorites if you just put in the effort.

The problems with the plot come from the fact that this comic was made at the last minute. Stan Lee was told to make a new Fantastic Four, which became X-Men, and another Spider-Man, which became Daredevil. Daredevil's artist, who was the creator of Namor, had a drinking problem and Daredevil was extremely late. At the time Marvel had to give the printer a deposit for each comic they had printed, and if they didn't bring in something within a certain period of time they lost the deposit. When it was clear Daredevil was not going to make the deadline, Stan told his fastest artist, Jack Kirby, to do something with their solo heroes, Thor, Iron Man, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, with Hulk tossed in. Avengers made the deadline. Daredevil didn't get published until six months later.

The Avengers were just made because the fans wanted it, huh? All right, I can believe that. But, I've heard another story, and I'm kind of inclined to believe it:The story goes that Stan Lee was instructed by his bosses to create a team book, but his first idea--the X-Men--was taking too long to put together, so he decided to save time and just throw a bunch of pre-existing characters together. I'm inclined to believe this story because X-Men #1 came out immediately after Avengers #1. This doesn't negate the "fan demand" story; it's totally possible Lee was already playing with the idea of the Avengers (he probably knew about the JSA and Justice League and/or the fans really were demanding Marvel's answer to the teams) or he was just scrambling for an idea and took influence for what the readers wanted.

about the whole them noticing Hulk is super strong but not green: that's apparently not an isolated case in earlier comics. I read an issue of Fantastic Four at the time where the army ends up attacking the Thing after mistaking him for the Hulk, because, I kid you not, the only indications Ross had given them was "Look for someone absurdly strong". And it takes them like 4 pages to realize that no, the orange guy made of rock *isn't* the big green monster they usually search for. I don't know, maybe it wasn't as well-known that Hulk was green back then or something.

If there's one thing, I've had to critique about Linkara's Avenger's #1 review is that the Hulk left by issue 2 not 3. I don't know, maybe he was looking at the covers for each issue to determine when he was a member. In issue 3 the Hulk teamed up with Namor the Sub Marinier to attack the Avengers, only for that to fail and the two to part ways. This left Namor to discover a frozen block with a certain star-spangled man inside, which of course led to the revival of Captain America. Otherwise, great review overall, despite my nitpick.
