This performance made my eyes leak. Others may sing this song, may try to claim it, but ALEX OWNS IT! The images made the beautiful music even more poignant. I was in Washington when the AIDS Quilt was on the lawn of the Mall. Hearing all the names, thinking about hearing all those names, still brings tears to my eyes even these 35 years later.

Alex Newell embodies the promise of America....to raise high the voices of greatness that arise within her, champion them, respect them, love them and honor them. Unfortunately, it is a promise too often broken and cruelly forgotten. Alex's voice reminds us how tragic it is to take away anyone's voice, and how we must protect and love our neighbor as ourselves and stop the violence that has taken so many beautiful voices from us.

I was around and very active if you get my drift prior to the AIDS crisis and now all these many years later hearing this reminds me that of all the friends and others that I knew way back when they're all gone I'm the only one that's left from that time period. Even after all this time I'm not quite sure why I was spared. I never even became HIV positive. Just goes to show sometimes you just never know....

I am sobbing right now. The imagery in this are so powerful. As a gay man who has had an HIV+ partner in the past. And many HIV+ friends. And as someone who fights as an ally for the black community and is disgusted with how my brothers and sisters in the black community are treated this video hit home and I honestly sobbed for 20 minutes.
