BONUS VIDEO: INTERVIEW WITH FRANK FOJTIK, WHO RODE OUT HURRICANE CARLA IN SARGENT TEXAS: • HURRICANE CARLA: INTER...
Film from September 1961 of the damage left by Hurricane Carla in Sargent, Texas which is in Matagorda County, in the middle Texas coast.
Carla, one of the largest hurricanes to ever hit the US mainland, was a category 5 storm for much of her life in the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall near Port O'Conner, Texas as a strong category 4. The video was scanned from original 8mm Kodachrome.
This film footage shows the severe damage caused by Carla in Caney Creek Estates. In the lower elevation parts of the subdivision there was total devestation with nothing left but foundations. It was estimated that the tidal surge exceeded 20 feet in parts of the area with wind gusts of 175 mph.
Carla was 40 years to the day before the tragic 9-11-2001 attack on the Twin Towers in New York City. Two horrible days in history, one man made, and the other by Mother Nature.

I remember this hurricane. I was at Sam Houston State entering as a freshman. Elliott Hall the day before the hurricane hit. My parents did not want to leave me there with the storm coming, but there I was and I survived the terrific winds and rain. Those were the days when you are 18 and in those days you are afraid of nothing. :)

Houston was hit hard from Carla, only 2 hurricanes since hit the city, 1983 Alicia and 2008 Ike. Harvey wasn't a direct hit to the city, but did the damage with the excessive rainfall which led to the worst flooding in the cities history.

Really happy to run across this video. I was only 6 at the time and not too far from here in Lake Jackson then. Thanks for putting it up.

My father bought some land right after Carla hit. I remember visiting a family that lived up on Caney Creek. They had a boathouse with a lift. He pointed out the snakeskin that was still hanging from the rafters 16 ft up which was proof of how high the water got on the creek. I will never forget it I was very young.

Wow! Posted 10 years ago and I just now found it. Thanks for sharing. Really brings back memories. I rode out Carla in Houston. I was possibly flying over head during this filming on my way down to Palacios to check on property there. As we descended into Palacios I recall the overpowering stinch of dead sea life and livestock before we even landed. That was a mega-storm! My Carla video is at: ruclips.net/video/QUMQYLPQJYg/видео.html
