  • One of my students asked Mulgrew Miller if he could show the way he would play the comping and solo on All The Things You Are (by Jerome Kern) at his Piano Master Class at The Center For Jazz Studies Israel Conservatory, Tel Aviv May 2012.

      +mali carter Don't hurt yourself! I can reach 12ths since I have big hands, but don't stretch if it hurts. Instead, just pivot - they don't have to be hit in simultaneity.

      @@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton Pivot, and rock and pump them for extra rhythm. perfect for this tune with all the shorter minor chords. but you can work and get more reach. I have over the years. Gradually and gently of course.

    i got my left hand stretched out enough to do (most!) 10ths. Easier, and perfect for the minor chords in this tune. Wide, wide open, sparse, deep,
    not overly defined. You can lay on it or sort of rock it for more rhythm. And simple so you can concentrate on right hand.

    yes-your right. she said "its Mullgrew Miller". As for the "spelling" the voicing wrong, I quite clearly stated after the "1, 5, 9, 3, 7, 11" that is was Dorian Minor. As you may know, the Dorian Scale looks like the Ionian scale (Major) with a flattened 3rd and flattened 7th-or dominant 7th. The only other possible scale (including harmonic major, harmonic minor and melodic minor scales and all their modes) is Aeolian. And it wasn't me that said Kenny B owns it. It was maestro Miller.

    • @johnb2476
      @johnb2476 3 года назад +1

      Alec Katz those are more stride style pianists! The way Tommy Flanagan and Mulgrew Miller use these big left hand voicings is a little different. They’re definitely less triadic. So impressive and unexpected.

    • @AlecKatz
      @AlecKatz  3 года назад +1

      @@johnb2476 this kind of in the left hand accompaniment, what you call drop 2 voicings, a full sounding open seventh chords like root + 573 or root + 73 come from the stride / swing piano tradition of Tatum, Teddy Willson Erroll Garner abd widely used in a solo piano context by many pianists from O.Peterson, Jimmy Rowles, Hank Jones, Barry Harris, Flanagan, Rolland Hanna to McCoy Tyner (listen to him playing solo) Cedar Walton, Kenny Barron and Miulgrew Miller

    the kid[girl] said ''no its mullgrew miller''. you also spelled the voicing wrong. it's 1, 5, 9, 3b, 7b,11. it's a Bb minor 11 chord. this is a very common chord in jazz music. kenny barron does not own the rights to it. lol i think you need better speakers for your computer.
