That one was based on the Buddahist belief that it takes 10,000 years to change your soul.
Really great movie. One very unusual thing about it is that the repetition of the days is never explained, yes, it is a metaphor, but normally when something paranormal happens in a movie like this, a witch curses the main character, or something of that ilk. But in this movie it just starts happening until it stops.
I remember reading that In the original script it was supposed to be an ex girlfriend who casts a curse on him. Glad they didn't include it. Works much better as a mystery.

Worf from STNG theorized Bill Murry's problem - “There is this theory of the Moebius. A twist in the fabric of space where time becomes a loop from which there is no escape."
The morgue scene breaks the morals and rules of this movie. It proves that these timelines go on AFTER he does...so everything he does, does have a consequence. Completely changes the lesson and he becomes an absolute monster.
According to the film creators the total amount of days that the loop continued is deliberately unspecified and up to interpretation. However, it's heavily hinted that it was at a minimum 10 years, and possibly even centuries if not millenia.
I always wonder how he figured out everything about those people. Obviously he can’t just ask because people wouldn’t directly answer him and tell him everything about themselves. He also couldn’t form a good friendship in 24 hours to get to know them so I wonder how he knows.
