LITTLE ROVER | Song for Opportunity

- Long before I ever settled on being any sort of artist or musician, I was obsessed with robotics. Eventually I realised that just because I was good at drawing robots it didn't mean I was any good at the numbers side of things. But that fascination with robots has always stuck with me so when I heard the news of the Opportunity Rover, I knew I wanted to do something to mark the amazing achievement of the lil' guy up there and all the folks over at NASA who made it possible.
In 2004 Opportunity landed on Mars for a 90 day mission. But that mission ended up continuing for well over a decade. After a dust storm forced Opportunity into hibernation last year NASA spent months trying to wake him up. On February 13, 2019, NASA officials declared his mission complete.
This was a little mini project just to tide things over whilst I work on some bigger things so no fancy video for this one! Huge thanks to Eskelater for being able to turn around this instrumental so quickly!

Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time the solar panels were rendered inoperable on the Opportunity, but every previous time, the winds of Mars cleared them, making them operable again.
Mars was looking out for his little buddy.
Lets hope one day we can bring him home
If I ever get the opportunity to go to Mars I would have just one request Give opotunity a good clean up and let his journey carry on
The random guy I agree. My hope is that once we get to Mars Opportunity will get recovered and put in a museum. Unless (of course) the information it gathers will actually prove very useful, then sending if off again after a once over would be amazing.
I don’t know if this is true, but I’d heard he was powered down for long enough that internal temperature regulators couldn’t keep him warm enough for long enough to stop him from freezing. He essentially froze to death.
@@arandomguy8771 That would be amazing. Just imagine him being used to map out the surface of mars, not for future settlers, but for current ones, helping out the human race as we expand to a new world.
@@r2d2fromstartrek16 you really just had to make this sad boi story even sadder huh..
Mars looked to the empty dark sky again, as he often did since his metal friend had gone silent. Though at the time he knew this visit would be only a short blip in his time as a celestial body, he never expected the small wheels persisting in his dusty breath to grow so important to him. So long now he missed the gentle slow meandering and the tickle of the metal drone's prodding, he wished that the "Earth" which the rover spoke to would send him another companion soon. He so terribly wanted another to call him home.
A streak in the sky wrenched Mars from his musings, and he felt an entity enter his space. "Another rover!" the ancient thought with excitement, drawing his breath shallow so the new arrival would land safely. But the entity was larger than the last....too large. Yet despite this it landed gracefully utop his skin. Tiny wheels touched down on his surface...no...not wheels.
A mound of rusty sand rose and Mars opened his eyes, the shape which only his wandering body had taken greeting his eyes. The beings who made his friend, the children of Earth. They had come to Mars....and they were taking the lifeless Opportunity! His eyes grew hot and his breath staggered as a dust storm began to rage. No, they cant take his friend, they have no right! The creators moved faster with their drone than Mars could stop, and soon his still friend was in the pure metal skin of the Earth craft.
Mars pounded on the door and then the window's, trying to save his only friend, his only memory from those who had supplied them to him. Dry dust streamed from his eyes, the water gone so long ago he no longer knew what it was. Then light streamed from the top of the metal body. Mars climbed the sharp angles and strange shapes until he looked down into a room full of objects which looked to have blinking stars embedded inside them. What were these Earth children? In the center of the room lay his friend, one of the children laying their hands deep within Opportunity. The small rover began to shudder, a pale light shone through its eye. The child stepped away and looked up at Mars, the celestial shocked he could be seen. Opportunity then cast its lens up to its friend, and a smile crept onto his emerging face. A drop trickled down the old celestial's face and the Earth child spoke. "I'm sorry we took so long to come wake him up, Uncle. Our offering to you as our new home...is the friend we sent you so long ago."
Mars sprung rivers from his face and water returned to the dead landscape, the body shaking with joy and relief as he watched his only friend return before his eyes. The red planet on that day became a little bluer.
Well done and truely works with this song

Made me tear up

This song is absolutely amazing. Combine it with our tendency to project onto anything, little Opportunity included, it's no wonder this is so popular.
And people say AI would hate us because we'd abuse them. People get attached to roomba's of all things, you really think we'd abuse Humanity's "Children"?
Well it depends humans are hairless stupid apes we think anything that looks like our babies look “cute” we’re much more simple creatures we realise
AI would probably be thankful but confused that we care for it
I don’t know, look how we treat our fellow humans.
I guess it depend, most people would go full "it's so cute, must protecc" and few would go "I can punch it without consequences? N I C E"
I like to imagine an AI takeover happening because it learns the people that created it had their funding cut.
NOTE TO EVERYONE: People keep commenting about how Opportunity is fine and booted back up. This is sadly not true, people are confusing Opportunity with Curiosity, NASA's other Mars rover. Curiosity briefly crashed and rebooted after a short while, Opportunity has been completely shut down and the mission has been declared over, NASA are no longer attempting to wake it, it cannot wake on its own.
LYRICS:
There's a speck beyond the heavens
There's a dot among the stars
That men for generations said
To be the face of Mars
I've often thought his thirst for war
Might one day find an end
That he might calm down a little
If he only found a friend
Well it's far too far to visit
We've barely reached the moon
But we thought we'd send a messenger
To say we'd be there soon
So our finest, best and brightest
Set their minds to a machine
To venture in our stead through space
To keep him company
So carry on little rover
Opportunity awaits
Though your song may be over
May your music never fade
That you’ve written in the sands
Of lands afar we’ve yet to face
Little rover
We hope you found your home
A year among the stars
And then our hero hurtled down
And Mars was quite surprised
To find the little guy around
He showed him rocks and mountains
And all the things between
And the little rover wrote us
About all the things he’d seen
The time flew by and soon
His visit reached its final day
But he and Mars got on so well
That rover chose to stay
So off they went together
For adventure they were bound
But he kept on writing letters
About all the things they found
So carry on little rover
Opportunity awaits
Though your song may be over
May your music never fade
As it floats along the dust
You conjured in the trail you blazed
Little rover
We hope you found your home
A whole year of their friendship passed
And then a dozen more
And letters of adventures
Kept on piling at our door
But tiny wheels in alien fields
Can only go so far
And soon the rover's time had come
To rest among the stars
We’re all rushing to be somewhere
In this crazy human race
How ironic that some gears and wheels
Would go and win first place
Your one small step turned out to be
An odyssey in space
So when one day we join you
You left tire treads to trace
So carry on, little rover
Opportunity awaits
Though your song may be over
May your music never fade
As it plays among the stars
That shine upon you where you lay
Little rover
We hope you found your home
It's time to sleep little rover
Maybe someday you'll awaken
To find that we all followed you
Along the steps you’ve taken
So you can rest your head
Knowing one day we'll be saying
Little rover
You helped us find our home
Little rover
We hope you found your home
We're sorry
That we couldn't bring you home
Wait when you say mars when refering to it actually being sentient are you talking about the Roman god the planet is named after (or ares if you want to be greek about it)
@@Emily12471 That's the idea, yeah. A song about a robot chilling with rocks was much less fun to write than a song about a robot chilling with an ancient celestial being. :P

Its funny to think about the buddy comedy style back-and-forth between a little rover and the god of war.
It’s 4.9ft it is by no means little
@Zachary Dye Athena is the better god(dess) of war, change my mind
Kyle Tibor you mean ares right
@Zachary Dye Yeah, Mars is the same as Ares, but romanized, and since the Roman Pantheon was far more wellknown (and the romans had a larger impact on history) they named them "Mars, Jupiter, Mercury" etc, after the Roman Gods.
@@martalover17 honestly its more that Athena is the god of the smarter parts of war, tactics and such, meanwhile Mars is the god of the actual fighty fighty part.
We could barely reach the moon and yet a tiny little robot left the first tracks on mars, this whole song seems an homage to David Bowie's style with the celestial melancholy of Space Oddity but with the soul of the sleeping robot. Maybe one day we'll wake it up, maybe the first human face it will see will resemble Matt Damon (only kidding, but maybe). And maybe they'll play this song to it. That would be nice wouldn't it? A beautiful tune that nearly shed some tears, thanks little rover.
This song's rhythm and melody does give off David Bowie vibes.

I am for the idea of calling the first mars base "Opportunity". RIP Little Rover Opportunity you served well, very well. for 14 years instead of 90 days... he was strong
We should establish the Cult of Opportunity, a religion with Opportunity as the chief deity
If they don't have a statue of the opportunity rover in the base then I will be very disappointed
@Garage Banderman we will have two status!
shouldn't it be Spirit Base or Viking Base? if we're going off of chronology of probes lost on the sands of Mars
emilsees We’ll have three great cities on Mars. Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity. Home will come to them
You know I just realized. One day in the future there'll be something big on the news for sure; not just people finally setting foot on Mars, but eventually the top story will be that they found Opportunity. Maybe when that happens, Opportunity will be salvageable since the only reason it stopped was because of lack of power, but of course that depends on how Mars's conditions will treat the rover...
We all know mars would never hurt his buddy
Opportunity would need a lot more repairs than that. The lack of power caused the rover to fail, yes, but the lack of power meant that Opportunity could not operate the heaters on it, and now the batteries and I'm sure many other critical components have truly failed and would need to be replaced
@@bradleylindsey3540 Perhaps, but it would be a mere trifle even so. So long as everything else in the Rover holds out; we can still salvage that curious child of steel... one day...
Mars will protect his little buddy no matter what and no matter how unlikely my own personal mission in life is to help Opportunity in any way i can its the least i can do for humanity's trail blazer
Hope so
I truly hope that once we have even just a temporary presence on Mars, we send someone/ a few people out to fix Opportunity. He needs another chance at life. Once we develop true AI, we need to upgrade Opportunity and give him true life, and a spirit if it works that way, a life in honor of him, a spirit in honor of his twin...

I love how you referenced Ares, the god of war. One of his names is Mars after all.
I know this is silly; But Mars Ultar is Very distinct from Ares. Yes many Roman gods are fairly cut and paste..The Avenger is not one of them.
The Director the Romans basically just copied the Greeks tho and made very fine changes
@@kasadeya3754 what are the differences between ares and mars?
jay quickblade,
Okay. So first ares, ares is a raging lunatic that has no real tactical skill but immense physical prowess, is Effectivly a man child, with a daddy issue problem, a girl friend who strings him along is the youngest core Olympian, and is still a engine of destruction, who loves his kids, and can’t figure out why Hephaestus is so damn angry..becuse he’s still a teenager. In 80% of the ways that matter.
-/-/-
Mars, Is acommponied by Phobos and Diemos, is feared and revered.. he is a god of war in all its aspects.. from slaughter after victory to the fighting perfect of ares to the tactical and strategic acumen, he is a calm level headed god with a focused and painfully callous disposition.
He is God of Revenge, of the long war. Even further that he is a old god, a clever god..who desires no mates, and has non practically Asexual and by no means a child. He is a bitter focused manifestation of how Rome viewed war. Compared to ares being a manifestation of how Greece viewed warriors. Ares is an exageration of what Perfect Warrior is, and is a god of martial prowess..
Mars is a God of Vengence who’s domain is the calculus of war. Accompanied by Fear and Despair as his vassals..
Again.. the Romans took the core frame work, and changed (for some of them) a lot of the actual details.
Becuse their not copy pastes, their fusions. Much like Aphrodite and Pan are, fusions of multiple gods from other culture and their own into a unified tradition.
@@kasadeya3754 you know.. In a lot of ways mars seems like a more mature ares

Captain there seems to be an issue. We’ve reached Opportunity’s last known location but...it isn’t here. No tread marks, so surface fissures, there’s no way the winds could’ve carried it off. It’s like it just disappeared.

Ares silently looks up at the star lit sky. He stays there, sleepless, all night, and when the sun rises, the machine next to him begins to buzz and whir. Ares looked at the rover, which turned its lens to him. Not just staring blankly like an average camera, but with a purpose and consciousness well beyond what was created of its original creators. The Olympian feels hot tears drip down his scarred cheeks, and a mouth very used to being into snarls or sneers easily turned into a wobbling smile.
“Welcome back, my little Opportunity.”
I loved this, Ares is my favorite god and doesn't get enough love.

I have been in love with robots since I was a tiny child and followed the Opportunity story since they launched it. I was legitimately kind of heartbroken when they announced that it's mission had finally come to an end. This song is amazing and I am glad that I stumbled across it tonight. Thanks for making it!
I remember I was a little kid when they launched Opportunity and it went to mars. I remember how amazing it was to see the launch on TV and I remember how ecstatic the people at NASA were. It was a few year until I realized how significant it was. We should never forget the little rovers we sent.
Ayo why you murder those 5 children in the parts in service
Hope Stupendium sees this.
I'll be honest, the past two songs didn't hit me too hard. Granted, I'm not a big Kingdom Hearts guy or Hitman. Not that I couldn't love those songs, and they were good and had some beautiful visuals. And Hell I refuted 76 like most of the internet but that song is still one of my favorites. Regardless, I was starting to fall out. Heh.
But then I heard this.
And I don't know if it's my infatuation with personified machines or my immense love for ancient mythologies, or the Human feel of this, but this song is just bliss. It brought me to tears and filled me with such a wholesome joy.
It just feels so good to listen to. Like it makes my heart feel sad, but it gives it a hug at the same time.
I'll never forget the Little Rover.

Really tugging at my heartstrings there.
Reminds me of an older song about the Pioneer Probes by Jordin Kare.
"We sent them out to the planets to worlds beyond our own
Where frail men dared not venture they travel on alone
Though they be no more than robots to the stars themselves they steer
And we wish them on their journey all the luck of the pioneer
They set their course for Jupiter the ruler of the worlds
To gain their speed from his mighty pull as from a slingshot hurled
They stole for us his image, his secrets guarded dear
But gave in turn a royal gift in the luck of the pioneer
Then on and out to Saturn, the ringed queen of skies
And through the very rings themselves they carried our distant eyes
We feared them for their safety, but they could know no fear
And they left their name on the gap they found by the luck of the pioneer
The sun grows dim behind them, a billion miles or more
The stars are there before them, a glittering distant shore
An age will pass before the day a strange sun draws them near
And 'till that day we'll raise a toast to the luck of the pioneer
But should some other find them as the galaxy they roam
And study these strange craft of ours and seek to learn their home
They carry our maps upon them in friendship written clear
And we give to the race that finds them all the luck of the pioneer
And when men someday follow to the places they have been
We'll take the paths they've marked for us and see the sights they've see
To Jupiter and Saturn to the stars themselves we'll steer
And we pray that God but grant us then the luck of the pioneer
Aye, we pray that God but grant us then the luck of the pioneer"

EDIT: Thanks for the heart too! Space and robotics have always been inspirational for me. Especially with the opportunity and the Mars exploration. Thank you so much! :D
Reading the description on your love for robotics and wanting to be a roboticist (Not sure if that's the actual term) really resonated with my want to be an artist. I can draw at least at some level of decent in my opinion, but do to my hand tremor I kinda had to make peace with never being able to be the kinda artist I wanted to be (which is basically anime). I'm glad you found something else to do that makes you happy and you can make a living on. I still draw every now and then as my love for it never faded, bu the feeling of finding out you aren't made for what you want to do really resonated with me. Yet more of a reason I love you and your songs. You're awesome man.
It's one of my favorite things Stupendium does. He puts out tremendously clever, catchy, high quality music videos on a fairly regular basis, but in-between the "big" videos he occasionally writes smaller, more personal songs about something that matters to him personally. They don't always draw in the 7-digit figure view count like his A-list videos do, but they resonate on a deeper level to certain people. Mine was "No Wave Like Home", though this one always brings a tear to my eye.
Damn it, you. You write all these funny and occasionally serious songs that make me smile and then you write this that makes me cry. Thank you.
It's an amazing somber song, about the little rover opportunity, and I absolutely loved the way you used the Roman god Mars (Roman equivalent to the Greek Ares (who is the god of war)) and made the planet a person by intertwining them into one being. and the friendship bit at the beginning about mars' thirst for war coming to an end if he only had a friend was awesome. The art with the robot and the roman warrior was also a nice touch. This is a fantastic song :)
"Maybe someday you'll awaken to find that we all followed you" That just gives this beautiful image. Light slowly fading back in for Opportunity, and the first it sees are a group of humans smiling at them. I almost wanna cry just at the thought.
Man you hit me right in the emotions. ow..
i`m one of those people on which faces you will never ever see tears, and right now i`m crying
As I looked at all the reactions of people who have heard the news, I realized that opportunity truly brought many of us together. Those who have worked on space travel work harder to try and save it or at least give them a proper ceremony before we say goodbye forever. In its death, opportunity brought so many people together in a common cause. Perhaps we'll be on mars far sooner than what was originally planned. Curiosity has lost its siblings but it will never be without a family.
As a last goodbye to opportunity I wrote this to follow the tune of your song
Sit tight little rover
Worry not about your work
curiosity carries on for you
And sends messages to earth
Don't despair little rover
Though you might never sing again
If home is where the heart is
Then you'll always have your friends
Hold on little rover
We'll find you soon enough
And even if you never wake
Our memory's made of tougher stuff
Sleep well little rover
May your legend never end
Know we all have fought and wept for you
Our precious, gentle friend
Just know this little rover
Though you've gone where we can't go
In whatever waits beyond the stars
We hope you've found your home...
We hope you're not alone...
Please forgives us, we couldn't bring you home.

Have you ever thought about making songs for movies? After seeing this I know you can do anything. I'd love to see you sing about How to Train your Dragon with the third and final movie just coming out now. You would do great with that. Keep up the amazing work!
This song should be put on the Golden Record we send to space with our machines to show that even though we may fight ,and have war. But humanity can still see that our BIGGEST PIONNEER & MOST PEACEFUL CREATION was a robot made by the generation of the 2000s to see our beautiful planetary neighbor ,and then for the next half a decade he persevered through the cold nights ,and harsh storms to pave our future. BTW I literally think this should get more views then just 800K people should listen to this song and see that the little rover paved our future towards mars for 15 YEARS. And on that note Opportunity we the people of earth should be honored to name the first Manned station on mars is named Opportunity Station.
