Mars: What happened to the Spirit Rover?

  • 'I can't move and it's getting cold'.
If the Spirit rover could speak, this is what it would have said.
Our story begins in 2004, January 4th.
The spirit rover slams into the dusty surface of Mars, bouncing on it’s airbags 28 times before coming to rest.
It landed about 13 kilometres away from the targeted site, in the Gusev Crater.
The team at NASA informally named the landing site ‘Columbia Memorial Station’, in honour of the astronauts who were lost in the Columbia disaster, just the year before in 2003.
After a successful landing, Spirit opens its eyes. This is the first colour image Spirit captured, which was, at that time; the highest definition image ever taken on another planet.
So far the mission was running smoothly, but that was all about to change.
On January 21st, Spirit’s 17th Martian day, mission control suddenly lost contact with the rover.
The next day, Spirit sent a short beep, confirming that it had received a signal from Earth but that the rover believed it was in some sort of fault mode.
At the time, NASA engineers speculated that the rover was stuck in a reboot loop. Spirit was programmed to restart if it detected a fault, but if that fault occurred during reboot, it would continue to reboot indefinitely.
This meant that the rover was not going into sleep mode, therefore wasting it’s energy and running the risk of overheating. This error was taken very seriously and could have signalled the end of Spirit’s journey.
Luckily, on Spirit’s 19th day, the team at NASA announced that the problem was actually with Spirit’s flash memory, and the issue was software related. The fix was as easy as deleting some files carried on the rover’s flash drives and reformatting the system.
By day 32, Spirit was back up and running.
Spirit would go on to make more discoveries and run into more trouble, watch the video to see spirit's full journey.

Two things: gotta love how every aspect of this mission was carried to learn into the next ones, including the precursor for a crane landing, the bouncy ball, which brings me to ... holly shit, you have got to give the engineers over at NASA every spec of respect for making a device able to suck up all that punishment upon landing. We'd have to get all our bones set 15 times over if we'd bounce half as much as that rover did. Amazing.

The Spirit rover, also known as the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) A, was one of two robotic Mars rovers launched by NASA in 2003 as part of the Mars Exploration Rover program. The mission's goal was to search for signs of past water and to study the Martian geology.
Spirit landed on Mars on January 4, 2004, in Gusev Crater and operated for more than six years, far exceeding its original 90-day mission plan. Spirit's main scientific objective was to study the history of water on Mars. The rover's instruments were used to study the composition of rocks and soil, search for evidence of past water, and examine the planet's geology.
Spirit was equipped with several scientific instruments, including a panoramic camera, a rock abrasion tool, a Moessbauer spectrometer, an alpha particle X-ray spectrometer, a Mössbauer spectrometer, a miniature thermal emission spectrometer, and a magnetic field sensor.
During its mission, Spirit discovered that the planet had a more varied geology than previously thought and also found evidence of past water in the form of minerals that only form in the presence of water. The rover also discovered evidence of volcanic activity on Mars.
Spirit rover's mission was declared complete on May 25, 2011, after it got stuck in a sand trap, and NASA was unable to free the rover and restore full mobility. However, it had greatly exceeded its planned mission lifetime of 90 days, and it had returned a wealth of scientific data and images that helped to greatly increase our understanding of Mars.

@@LucasGonzalezA no chance. As the very well informed astronaut Jim lovell said quote "don't be holding your breath on a manned mission to Mars". The enormous challenge of getting people to another planet for the first time is mind blowing. The distance, our limitations in terms of velocity, long term radiation exposure, logistics I. E food, water, oxygen and other essentials not to mention your utilities on board for an 18 month round trip to a planet which at its nearest orbital position is around 38 million miles away. Then there's of course the unforseen dangers, I. E space debris hitting the craft, tensions within the crew, and long term effects of zero to little gravity on Mars. Dust storms are a potential life threatening event on the surface of Mars, which the dust is far more minute and can pose a problem to the lander and affect mechanisms on the transport vehicle which departs mars on the return to the mars orbiter. Decades I believe you need to disbelieve after this message. These are only some of the many others, the phrase no room for error may have a emphasis, anyone, especially the first astronauts, cosmonauts, teikmonauts will need and then some. Oh I forgot mars temperature makes the Antarctica feel like the Sahara desert. Your on Mars with the knowledge that if your exposed to Mars atmosphere you die! Youll be in some kind of cumbersome suit for the duration of your stay on Mars, and you'll need plenty of warmth for your stay or you'll die!. Welcome to Mars!

It took the smartest humans on our planet to create this one of a kind machine. We were actually able to create a machine that has human senses like touch, feel, see, hear and probably smell of some kind lol... it is just amazing how we can send something millions of miles away from our planet and have it survive so long on its own.
