      This doesn't work from a fuel standpoint though. If you want to get to Mercury from Earth you'll spend less fuel by flying away from the Sun into an elliptical orbit and then slowing down at the farthest point from the Sun so that you reach Mercury and then dropping your orbit to stay with Mercury when you reach Mercury.

      @@alexsiemers7898 Closest by distance is the issue, not closest by energy. If we were considering the energy requirements to get from one object to another, then this experiment of CGPGrey's might have something a lot more interesting to say.

    • @sacwingedbatsatadbitsad4346
      @sacwingedbatsatadbitsad4346 Год назад +32

      @@efulmer8675 Energy requirement isn't really a lot more interesting, it's arguably a lot more mundane. There's really only one factor to consider, how time-sensitive it is. If it's really time sensitive, the lowest average distance is still optimal. If you were to launch a round trip every day, mercury would still, in fact, be the closest in terms of fuel spent. If it's not time-sensitive, minimum distance matters most, so long as you can get an encounter, you can match orbits for almost free using gravity assists, though it might take multiple passes and upwards of thousands of years in the case of the outer planets. If we're talking about a practical tradeoff that maximizes the frequency of transfer windows while minimizing the fuel, well, there's no one size fits all solution, the criteria are inherently subjective to the human experience and personal preference. But generally speaking, Venus is closest, Mars is second, Mercury's third, and then it goes in order outwards given current human lifespans, aerospace technology, and economy.

    • @reinei1
      @reinei1 Год назад +6

      Yep, which is also why mercury basically *must* be the mostest closest, because if you were to assume spherical-ish orbits the center of each orbit would obviously be the mostest closest (because the radius would basically be the steadiest and shortest distance {which is also why spherical-ish orbits are enough}) so if the literal center (assuming a static sun) fails one of the requirements obviously the next closest object which *does* fulfill all requirements must be the mostest closest...

      As he talked about towards the end it has to due with each planet spends about half its time on the opposite side of the Sun from each other.
      So about 1/3 of the time Venus is further away from Earth than Mercury can possible be.
      About 1/6 of the time Venus is closer than Mercury can possible be.
      And the final 1/2 of the time Venus or Mercury could be closer and due to symmetry each has about 1/2 the time closer.
      Thus about if you add these up Mercury is closer than Venus 7/12ths of time (simplified fractions not actual amounts, but shows the point).
      Thus the key is that Venus with its bigger orbit spends much more time being Further from Earth than Mercury could possibly be, than it spends as time Closer than Mercury could possibly be.

      @@pranavlimaye No. The "inclusive or" joke only works if the question is a yes-or-no question with more than one possibility. For example, "Would you like to be closest to Earth or Mars?" could be split up into "Would you like to be closest to Earth?" - No. - "OK, would you like to be closest to Mars?" - Yes.
      In everyday speech, these two questions are contracted, with the expected answer being "Earth" or "Mars". NOW you can instead answer "yes" to make a joke, with the yes meaning "Yes, I would like to be closest to one of the two."
      Asking "How many" or "Which" etc can never be answered by yes, and thus the joke does not work.
      It was a bad joke from the start, since it is only funny if the reader did not pick up on the fact that the answer is possible, since we're so used to picking one of the alternatives.
      But now it's just sad since people apparently forgot how logic works entirely.

      @@Kanyewest3 Saturn, father of Jupiter, received a prophecy that one of his offspring would overthrow him, so he ate all his kids immediately after they were born except Jupiter, because his mom (Saturn's wife) was able to trick Saturn. Jupiter grew up and was able to cut all his siblings out of Saturn (because they're gods and trivial things like being eaten alive won't kill them) thus fulfilling the prophecy (which evidently, wouldn't have happened if Saturn just tried being a decent dad).
