@@lvd8122 It's admirable to give up ambition, but as a political leader that was boneheadedly stupid.
The main failing was that he gave up all that territory without any real insurance from Charles that there'd be peace; so soldiers died in battle even after the king had promised the people of England they'd be coming home, and then all the while, the king was sitting, happily married, drinking wine, while soldiers were butchered on the battlefield.

They were actually defeated several times before, for example at the Battle of Cocherel or Battle of La Brossiniere, without artillery
Indeed Talbot (and Falstolf) already got defeated at Patay without any artillery fire : a quick knight's charge... And the english got soundly defeated as well at Formigny: they got trapped in a pincer move between french and breton knights.
In fact the english commanders relied a bit too much on the longbow wich was at the time a soon to become obsolete weapon due to advances in armorsmithing (particularly horse barding).

Yay first crusade series
As someone who tends to ingest history piece by piece (eg. the "Joan of Arc" saga, the "War of the Roses" saga, the "Cromwell" saga, etc.), that bit at the end really gives a sense of chronology to these oft-isolated events.
Wasn't the ultimate French victory achieved as well because Charles VII instituted the first European standing army since Roman times ? I remember reading something of the sort…
42Froglegs Yup, he established a permanent army financed by taxes which helped him greatly to reconquer everything
He also found out that cannon are better than longbowmen
Dude the English are not going to admit that
@@piwithatsme You are right however, I believe that Knights always were superior to Longbowmen if used carefully. At Patay, French knights vanguard defeated English bows by themselves without artillery. And probably even more impressive, during the Battle of La Brossiniere, (2000 English losses to 1 single French knight loss) the English longbows had the time to camp and be entranched, and were also defeated by a flanking cavalry charge.
I think that previous Longbow victories were heavily dependant of the fact that early medieval horses were unprotected from arrows, that the Chivalry code asked for suicidal "blind charges" into pikes/earthworks , or other external factors like weather , the mud etc...

Aaron Paul your welcome for giving Paris back
Aaron Paul well lasting 116 years against a country which should’ve flooded England is pretty impressive
Won? No. Came out ahead? There's a case to be made.
@@laurencefraser It's hard to argue that England came out ahead in any short or even medium term sense (maybe in the medium term by letting England avoid getting dragged into the French Wars of Religion during the Reformation). There is a case to be made for the long-term, since the early seeds of nationalism and the relative disconnect from continental affairs due to losing their continental possessions during the war shaped England for centuries to come, impacting everything from their later colonial era and beyond. At the very least, the war was transformative for England.
I agree with David that England benefitted from losing the Hundred Years' War, but not for the reasons he gives.
The war was a matter of national survival - but not for France, as Joan of Arc thought. If a Plantagenet had conquered France, he could only rule his combined kingdom from Paris. Within a generation the royal family, the commanders, courtiers, poets and the rest of the court would be entirely French-born and bred. England would be reduced to a possession of France. Compare the Mongol conquest of China or the Stuart accession to the English throne.
