    came here for the delays, stayed for the fuzz pedal
    that thing absolutely rips

    I prefer the memory toy - more dreamy sounding

  • @vcsuwar6126

    I own both of these pedals. To my ears the Carbon Copy has more lifelike and organic sounding repeats while the Memory Toy's repeats sound artificial to my ears. There's uses for both of them. They actually sound like two very different delay pedals. The Memory Toy also self oscillates very early, which has its own uses.

    i have the Carbon Copy and a Deluxe Memory Boy (Memory Toy's biggest "sibling", which sounds identical)
    the main difference to me is in the low end and the fact that besides the repeats being "fatter" on the boy/toy, they are able to linger for way longer (more feedback before self oscillation).
    for Rock n roll and blues the MXR is better because of the less obstructive repeats, but for ambient and more experimental music i'd much rather have the EHX

    • @urwholefamilydied
      @urwholefamilydied 3 года назад +1

      are you suggesting that the Boy does go into self oscillation eventually? Didn't see it in this video is why I ask. I LOVE the sound the the Boy, but I really need self oscillation if it's going to be on my board... not cause I use it a ton, but it's an extra feature that if we go into some crazy end jam thing in a song, ya, I definitely want it to be there.

    • @laughs9684
      @laughs9684 3 года назад +1

      @@urwholefamilydied of course it does ,but u can get more repeats from it before it does

    • @urwholefamilydied
      @urwholefamilydied 3 года назад

      @@laughs9684 ya, I just bought one from a guy off craigslist today... no self oscillation. I tried (obviously) repeats up all the way, and then every combination of the other two knobs. Does not self oscillate. Even opened it up to see if there were any pots inside that could be adjusted... nothing adjustable inside.

    • @urwholefamilydied
      @urwholefamilydied 3 года назад +3

      @@laughs9684 stand corrected... there ARE pots inside, they're just SOOO damn small these days. So it looks like someone must have messed with my internal pots at some point. So I basically got stuck with a lemon, because that's not something I could adjust, and not sure if it's worth paying someone to adjust it. I messed with one of the pots that was the "feedback" or "repeats" pot, but it's just too damn sensitive and I think needs to be adjusted in conjunction with another pot. (when I went to far right, no repeats. Too far left, no repeats. And everthing in the middle didn't seem to help or change the amount of repeats at all).

      @@urwholefamilydied you make a delay self oscillate by turning the feedback knob to the fullest first.

    The carbon copy doesn’t change the input signal, whereas the memory toy does. The carbon copy is a technically competent aficionado of delay, whereas the memory toy is a delay party that sometimes gets sloppy (in a good way). I like both and I own the carbon copy.

      The Memory Toy feels like it gives a slight mid boost. It happens to work well on my pedal board for this reason. But people should definitely be aware.

  • @lundsweden
    @lundsweden 3 года назад +6

    Both nice pedals, very similar sound. I like the dark sound of these pedals.
    I was expecting to like the much more expensive and MUCH larger Electro Harmonix Memory Man, which has cleaner and brighter delays, but these smaller, less expensive pedals ROCK!

  • @themodularmodular
    @themodularmodular 2 года назад +5

    I'm surprised there wasn't much of aliasing noise at maxed delay setting on the Toy and it actually blends much nicer compared to CC, which was too dark and separated. Even my past DMM-TT 1100 had too much aliasing noise/artifacts that I had to return it the next day

  • @coreyw5981
    @coreyw5981 3 года назад +5

    This is the comparison i needed, thanks! Many people are trying to compare cc to a memory boy or man and that's not the same. These are the most similar

    • @laughs9684

      memory boy and toy are the same basically , the boy having more options than the toy but same chipset.
      Memory Man is different, its got the Boy/Toy low end and degradation ,but its brighter

    @jameshart9943 3 года назад +4

    Hey great video! I think for shorter settings they are neck and neck, but when you increase the delay time the MXR really shines though. I hear a lot of feedback from the memory toy at longer settings. Carbon copy wins it for me.

    • @PedalScience
      @PedalScience  3 года назад +1

      Its a tough call! The way the blend knob works on the memory toy is silly; unity dry signal when full CCW, but as soon as you mix in the delay, your dry signal level drops in tandem.
      The memory toy is easier to use with high feedback as it won't go into oscillation, whereas the carbon copy oscillates easily (and sometimes when you don't want it to).

      @@PedalScience...but when you look4 a used one to buy, MT comes cheap as chips so clear winner 4 me! The differences between these two are miniscule so the price of 100€ for CC and 50€ for MT makes the later one a clear choice 😜

    • @PedalScience
      @PedalScience  3 года назад +3

      I think it's luck of the draw based on the factory calibration, same happens with the DMMs - some oscillate easily, others not at all. I didn't tweak this one but did buy it used

    • @SaumBodhi
      @SaumBodhi 2 года назад +2

      Poor quality control. EHX have some great pedals but a lot of the time they make me wonder wtf oa going on over there in quality and also big design errors. Like their expencive loop stations with no undo buttons, or no independant looping. Also their noisy foot switches i think they think is something people like "a nice snap" when in fact it's bad for recording or even live. It's only ok on high gain distortion pedals when playing loud.

    • @digschister2615
      @digschister2615 2 года назад +9

      There are trim pots inside the memory toy that you can adjust to increase gain, make it oscillate more, etc. Mine did the same thing until I adjusted the gain up. No more cut in volume. If you look with a magnifying glass you can actually see he word gain above the pot. Use a very small eye glass screw driver and turn it clockwise in small increments until you get your gain up. Don't force it!
