  • In ancient Rome, the perception of beauty was quite different from what we consider beautiful today. In this video, we will cover beauty expectations for both men and women during the Roman Empire, including body shape, hair, makeup, and personal grooming.

Life expectancy is an average that is brought down by infant deaths… people did not just drop dead at 25 and very often lived to their 60’s if they made it to the age of 15

Oh hey, thanks for clarifying that. I forgot to account for the high infant death rate skewing the average.

For the guys and possible alarm for the ladies: the statues of men with small members was fairly accurate. Like women where large breasts were seen as humorous or sinful, this was the case for a man’s penis. A large member was seen as sinful and you were a man not of knowledge but of lust and sin, basically a curse. It wasn’t uncommon for humor prints to show men with large erected members, most commonly Satyrs. We must remember the human body evolves overtime and the average Greek woman was a high A cup to middle B cup, becoming “sinful” at C and higher. For a man 4.5-5.5 inches was the average range and circumcision was mandatory. 6 inches and above was considered sinful and excessive to the health of a woman. Also a man’s nose size was believed to be relative to the size of his member. Most women preferred smaller sized partners and it became a desired stance for men to be or try to appear in that range.

Very nice video the "Witch! Witch!" bit made me laugh :=). I would probably not be considered beautiful in ancient Rome, I've got a full beard, I'm skinny, and I probably have some "barbarian" ancestry. So, nope :=)

Great video and channel! I always thought that rome and Greek people seemingly loved a long torso! All depictions look like people have 3 or more extra vertebrae in their back. I have a feeling they would have loved the Y2K 'super low rise' jeans of the early 2000s!
