  • Irregular Income Budgeting. How do you budget with an irregular income? It's as simple as a prioritized spending plan, and possibly a hills and valley account. My RUclips earnings are irregular and so we use a prioritized spending plan to budget it. In this video I talk about the details on how you can do this too.

My husband has a second job as a guitar instructor and we have a dogsitting side hustle, so a chunk of our income is completely variable.
When you are budgeting with a variable income, it definitely works to budget month-to-month on the bare minimum you will earn. But when you're making your list of "extra" priorities for leftover money, make sure you consider occasional expenses (car tabs, car insurance, your dog's annual vet visit, or any other weird annual or semi-annual expenses that you might not be able to absorb into your month-to-month budget) and set aside money for those occasional expenses in "good income" months so that you're not short during "bare minimum income" months. You kind of have to budget for the whole year, as well as month-to-month. I feel like sinking funds are a must-have for anyone budgeting strictly on a variable income.

I do not know if you have said this,, but this is what i have always tried to do.. no matter what item we spend money on we must find the cheapest way. For instance Food, cheapest grocery store, and in that store the cheapest brands and make only one trip to save on gas, and if your going to buy food, plan all your other stops for the same day, and plan for the shortest route, and stop at the cheapest gas station. In other words every item or bill, find the cheapest way... even paying bills, what is the cheapest way.. do not use a stamp, pay online. I am not saying buy junk , i am saying find that place that sells the items you need the cheapest. When i was 18 my dad said we need a skylight for a job he was working on. I had never shopped for good prices before. I got out the phone book( yea long time ago) and started to call around for the best price, i discovered i could get the same skylight for half the price... That lesson i carried for the rest of my life. It all boils down to one thing. It's not how much you make,, it's how you spend it.

Farming is the ultimate in irregular income. We just spend as little as possible. I want to buy your shirt to support you, but not this month. Haha

My favorite shirt is the "budget meetings is my love language". It's so cute. I'm doing a no spend to kickstart baby step 6 so I will have to live without it for now but I will get one eventually.

Could you do a monthly update of the progress of expenses or income distribution, how far from paying debt, etc.? It doesn't have to be too personal nor to include all elements; just a generalized one suffice. Successful stories inspire others to do better, if that makes sense.

I am excited to receive my new shirts! They are too cute! Dana I am working to be debt free. I have two medical bills yet and then all my outstanding bills are paid off. I have been budgeting with the cash envelope method and I did use the clips for quite a while, but I did purchase some colored envelopes so I could keep better track and didn't have to keep worrying about getting the wrong money out of the wrong clip! It really helped and I am continuing this method,,,,hey if it aint broke!!! Thanks for your encouragement within the videos you share!

My husbands income varies monthly by $2000 or more so we always keep some aside for the lower months. Love the shirts!! Are they ethically made no sweat shop involvement?
