Always play to the end. I've had an opponent who had three on the board, I had 15 and I backgammoned. You never know your luck.

That's the whole problem with backgammon though, far too much depends on the roll of the dice. Discovering optimal strategy is fairly simple. So everyone plays the same strategy and the winner is the person who rolled the highest numbers.

yeah but it's still the same: as I said, optimal strategy is easy to work out. So, it's easy to take advantage of blocking opportunities. It's as easy as looking at the dice, seeing how far separated each counter is and combining any which have been made solitary by the roll of the dice or moving others so they'll make a pair, the opportunity to do it being decided by the roll of the dice.
There's taking into account probability but the odds are very easily understood. You can easily work out what chance there is of any roll including doubles. You can do it in your head or by writing down every possible dice roll. It takes about 10 minutes. Then you're about as good as anybody else and the dice determine whether you get the chances or not.

After a couple of years, the thought occurred to me that if they have big clunky dice there’s a likelihood that they will disturb the checkers when thrown, so the lighter the better.

My uncle taught me how to play once. My small brain forgot how to do math immediately and I kept asking for the rules every single turn. To this day I am still inept at this game 😭😭😭
My uncle has a beautiful handmade board he inherited from his parents I think, I remember it being super detailed with conch and different kinds of wood.
    Good memories.

It's not good enough to just use your hands to make sure of a fair roll of the dice. They're both world champions, so the standard is actually quite high.

I agree, the game looked like below average skill level. They should go play with some grandpas in Iran and then maybe they will learn more. Too risky moves from both sides. It does come down to luck which both players had plenty of this round at least.

Im confused how this is even a thing. I stopped the video after every throw and for the most part predicted the moves. There are maybe 3 to 4 moves a game that are based on intuition rather than odds. There are some strategies based on the relative position to your opponent and your basic strategy but having played at least 10,000 games or more, It doesnt seem like its that skilled after a while. If there is a way to sign up for this kind of thing ill give it a try. I love backgammon but there is a lot of luck involved once you intuitievely know the best move based for any given roll.

Ive played maybe 4-5 games per year with my dad for a while. Cookouts, etc. Never alot. I downloaded a backgammon app, played maybe 150 games in the last couple weeks (im off work because of surgery), and also quickly realized there is really a very limited ammount of strategy/skill, and mostly luck/probability.

I am sure we can beat every grandmaster at the highest level. 100% . We use to throw dices with hands instead of these thing. Believe me the pleasure it’s much better than with this small box.

@@abanbilal2012 He could have capped the 18 pip (as he did) but then not advance those two pieces together. Instead, he should have moved the two on pip 11 to pip 8.
One reason being, if he were to roll double 6s within his next few turns then he'd be screwed and have to leave one open on either 8 or 11.. which is right in opponent's line of sight. So, he needs to get those corner pieces repositioned asap to account for rolling any kind of 6s.
That's just one example of what else he could have done...
