      Please stop splurting crap. Lincolns had those settings in the EARLY 90s. My 95 Continental has 3 selectable modes on the message center. Town cars had a silder. Some Fords change steering tension at different speeds (EPAS), they boost on an evasive move on the freeway otherwise stay firm. These cars use a relief valve in the rack or pump.

    This kind of system is all very well, because, as you showed, you still have a steering column linking the wheel to the rack. However, I hear increasing numbers of people in the motor industry saying that, in the near future, cars will start to have steer-by-wire systems, which will entirely negate the need for a physical steering column. That scares me. No way would I want a car with no direct link between the driver and the wheels.

    Mr. Kilmer always has a sense of humor in his videos. I want to comment that electronic power steering systems are not cheap to replace, hopefully the car is still under factory warranty or the owner has insurance policy to cover if the car is being involve in an accident.
    The electronic power steering systems on some cars are hidden deep in the engine and require excessive labor time to remove and replace. Furthermore, some electronic power steering systems require a factory scan tool to re-calibrate the system when the replacement is completed.

    I've seen several reviews of journalists saying that electrical powersteering removes some road feel, like in the new Porsche 911s. Is that because the powersteering assists too much then? Seemingly as you said, the steering is still direct.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  8 лет назад +67

      +Rottensteam of course, all depends on the design, as in this mustang , you can remove tons of the road feel with the softer setting, but get it all with the sport setting. don't know about porsches other than they are over priced over engineered money pits that ride like golf carts, but can handle.

      It is a law in the US. According to the NHTSA,
      "Consistent with the phase-in commencing October 5, 2005, *all new light vehicles must be equipped with a TPMS that meets the requirements of the standard by September 1, 2007*, with the following exceptions. Vehicle manufacturers need not meet the standard's requirements for the TPMS malfunction indicator and related owner's manual language until September 1, 2007 (i.e., at the end of the phase-in), and vehicles produced by final-stage manufacturers and alterers must be equipped with a compliant TPMS (including a malfunction indicator) by September 1, 2008. However, manufacturers may voluntarily certify vehicles to FMVSS No. 138 and earn carry-forward credits for compliant vehicles, produced in excess of the phase-in requirements, that are manufactured between April 8, 2005, and the conclusion of the phase-in."

      Some power steering pumps have vacuum lines going to them. Whenever you turn the wheel, a valve in the pump opens up and raises the idle of the engine. I've bypassed that vacuum hose to see what would happen and the engine nearly stalled when I turned the wheel.

    I like the electric power-steering in my Mustang. I've never had any complaints about it. Frankly, it's one of the few things in modern cars that is actually *less* complicated than it used to be in older cars. Hydraulic power-steering is *such* a complicated mess! Electric power-steering is so much easier to deal with -- no high-pressure hydraulic lines, no maintenance -- it just works! Don't know why it hasn't been around for far longer.

    • @LMacNeill
      @LMacNeill 2 года назад

      @@Dmgolfer22 if electric power steering fails, it still lets you steer, same as hydraulic. The steering force is higher when the power-steering goes out, same as hydraulic.
      It’s not “steer-by-wire”. It’s physically connected to the wheels. You can still steer, even if power steering goes out.
      Ever had a fan-belt break? Hydraulic power steering runs off of a fan belt. It snaps with no warning, and you’ve lost your power steering. It’s the same feeling as when the electric power steering blows a fuse or the torque-sensor goes bad (like in the recalled Ford Escapes you’re talking about.)
      Just because it’s new doesn’t make it worse.

    My '97 Towncar had a slider on the dash by the headlight switch to adjust the steering wheel feel from loose to tight. That was a hydraulic system and I guess that's a similar end results as you were showing in the video. It can be done on a hydraulic system even if it's just "faked" by increasing the friction around the steering wheel while turning.

    My 02 Accord had hydraulic power steering. My 13 has electronic. I don't miss the days where the hydraulic system was low on fluid and it'd whine as I'd make turns. Ended up replacing the pump and hose. It still had some issues when I sold it and I told the buyer that it was possibly needing a new rack and pinion (according to my mechanic). That 02 was a great car and I miss features it had that the 13 does not (conventional automatic, double wishbone suspension- to name a couple) but I don't miss the expensive repair costs.

    My daughter has electronic power steering on her 2 year old CLA250. It broke already. When she went to start it, it had a steering fault warning and it wouldn't start. The fault must have disabled the starting. After a while it did start, probably because things cooled down some. So, if it fails it can strand you, at least in this car. The dealer said it was an $850 fix but it was under warranty. One word sums it up: Junk. Well, a few more words: Made to break.
    Hydraulic pump, piston, belt. Pretty simple and reliable. And probably consumes less power than the electronic version. The car's alternator has to work harder to provide power to the steering motor. Plus conversion losses. I think they have to put a higher capacity alternator and a larger battery in to compensate. The wheels take a certain amount of energy to turn them. I think the difference is negligible.
    If you pop a belt, the car still starts and you can drive it. If it leaks, you add fluid and live with it. I have never had a car that required a power steering repair other than a broken or loose belt. $10 for a belt and no dealer visit. $850 and a tow for the newer and better design if the car won't start.

    I don't trust EPAS at all, apart from feeling like utter crap to drive, I've seen too many EPAS systems completely spazzing out. When they fail they don't just simply stop working, they tend to jerk all over the place. And those Power steering motors are strong enough to break a weak wrist.
    Electronics are far more likely to fail over time and fail without warning, with hydraulic at least you'll get a bit of a leak and any half competent person can replace a pump or a hose cheaply, if your EPAS fails that will cost you an arm and a leg, and possibly life if you if fails at the wrong time.

      You don't trust epas at all and believe it to be dangerous,, but how many of the millions upon millions of epas equipped cars have had accidents caused by power steering failure? An extremely small amount. You don't have much to worry about.

    On the most European small cars, are the steering assistance electric, in most case is the assistance variable (no assistance at high speed). My car as a electric steering and i feel very well the road, i no see the difference with my older car with hydraulic steering...But the best steering i use in my life was the incredible DIRAVI steering from the 1970-1975 Citroën SM (2 turns for left to right, variable assistance with the speed, automatic return in line if release the wheel car parked...):with this system i found the car feels like respond directly at mind...

    Troublesome at best. My f-150 has had FOUR steering racks replaced do to EPAS faults. I'd rather go back to hydraulic steering. I've only had one car in 25 years with a steering problem (blown pressure hose) with this truck I think four racks in a year and a half is unreliable and unreasonable. Thank god for factory warranty!

    • @Fireship1
      @Fireship1 8 лет назад +2

      +xTerraH I agree that they could work well. If ford would allow individual parts to be replaced it wouldn't be such an ordeal. The steering angle sensor is the no 1 part that fails on the ford EPAS racks. It can be removed and examined, yet it's not available as a separate service part. You have to buy the whole rack. I understand these parts are installed with calibration and special equipment. They just need to make that available to the service market if they want to continue to offer a reliable product.

    In my experience, electric power steering often take some feeling out of the car. It seems that many cars filter out what the front wheels does more with electric steering. More over, I have never driven a car, that actually has more feeling in the steering wheel in sport mode, than in comfort. The only thing that seek to happen, is that it maeks the steering heavier in sport mode. But you stil have the same info from the front wheels up to your hands.

    I remember driving an expensive high performance GM with electronic power steering, and traction control. I grew up driving out this OLD back road into Mesa and then into Phoenix Arizona on weekdays at night. There is no one out there and the paved portion has been used for at least 300 different television car commercials. That being said, it's good fun challenging road that deteriorates into a rocky dirt road worthy of the worst rock strewn strips of hell that World Rally Racing has to offer. I thought I was going to kill myself when the car's computerized steering & traction control tried to take over and correct for my driving. I recently found a 1951 State Farm USA Road Atlas in my uncle's barn, and that road was actually "THE" second, alternate route from Flagstaff to Phoenix back in 1951. I always wondered how all those 1940s cars wound up at the bottoms of all those cliff and ravines on that USFS fire road. It used to be State Highway! LMFAO! Now they have it posted with signage that reads, "Warning! This Road is NOT Recommended for Normal Passenger Vehicles". WOW! Imagine that road being shown on a road Atlas back when people were still driving Kaisers, Hudsons, Ramblers, Nashes, Edsels & De Sotos. No wonder the desert was littered with all those rusty dented up old hulks. My 1999 Blazer started running hot, and I actually was heading off I-70 for a service station when the "Check Gauges" warning lamp came on. I was already very well aware 235 degrees is NOT the vehicle's normal running temp, so I was seeking someplace to safely stop, investigate the problem, get water, assess the situation, let things cool off, and make some decisions. I flushed everything, and was running some Prestone flush, and distilled water, and decided to take my favorite road to go hotdogging on. Sometime ago the USFS has actually cleaned up all the old 1950s cars. I was never too happy with antilock brakes on the 22% grades, and switchbacks, but 4 Wheel Low works, quite well, it just slows you way way down. It's also better for the vehicle, your tires, your brakes, your suspension, etc. I came across some stretches of the road I had not driven in 27 years, and all the washes are paved now, so i had the steering wheel ripped out of my hands once or twice going from gravel to pavement. You need that kind of finesse or you will roll your vehicle 5 times and either smack into an embankment or roll down a cliff side. I drive part of that road very aggressively every October to get ready for winter. The pea gravel is a lot like driving in snow and ice, and I'd rather screw up out there than on an interstate highway I am sharing with semi trucks, snow plows and idiots.

      I recently stopped to offer a ride to two women who hydroplaned their pickup truck 180 degrees, then smacked the K rail center divider, breaking the rear axle. They screwed up in a heavy downpour, not snow or ice. I was probably driving too fast for conditions too, but I am used to no traction, and sliding sideways, without going all the way around, ass over apple cart. I am glad you can get to some vacant roads close to the city too. Some people back east think of our roads out west as deathtraps, and they do have a valid point. My practice road is not frequently traveled during the week, but a hospital is fairly close by, unlike US 191 in Utah, where I would have to be flown to Denver or Salt Lake City for premium trauma center medical care. Oh, and we all drive like maniacs too.

    Electric power steering definitely has come a long way. I drove a 2006 Pontiac Torrent (Chevy Equinox equivalent) and had to make a turnaround in a tight space. That steering was awful during quick cutbacks of the wheel. However, I now have a 2008 GMC Canyon (Chevy Colorado equivalent) and it doesn't have that issue at all. Even just 2 years made a big difference.

      +Mohamed Li Yep, hydraulic power steering is much more serviceable than electronic. In the hydraulic system, there are a lot of small cheap parts that might need replaced, such as o-rings. In an electronic system, there are just a few big parts that can be replaced (e.g. cables, motor, control unit). The hydraulic system can also be diagnosed and repaired by any DIYer or mechanic, but the electronic system will probably need to be handled entirely by the dealership.

    Sometimes the eps doesn’t provide good feedback compared to a hydraulic assisted rack. But it’s about how the eps is tuned. The assistance torque can vary depending on speed and multiple modes can be implemented. At high speed the road feedback is often reduced so that you can keep the wheel straight without being affected by the road imperfections, that’s what I noticed with my eps (I disconnected the assistance and drove with no power steering to test that). Also a heavier car will require more assistance and you will get less feedback but that normally suits the vehicle type (for example SUV’s) so it’s more comfortable. Then the suspension is also important and weight balance because more weight to the front (like 65% ) means heavier unassisted steering so it requires more assistance. Another advantage is that automatic parking and lane assist or self driving can be done only using software since the motor can turn the wheels.

      *****
      Sorry to disagree Drew; the argument that steering is maintained during failure is what manufactures tell the NTSB. EPAS failure modes in real life include sudden loss of assist, intermittent binding, and most dangerous; sudden non-commanded steering wheel actuation from mild to strong torque. I have personal experience with the most dangerous type; which pinned my vehicle into a curb while making sharp turn from stop.
      In my opinion; one of the most critical errors associated with automobile design was introduction of highly complex electrical implementations throughput the industry. Potential for failure increases exponentially with level of complexity, and so does cost. Engineers love to design and redesign systems with no consideration for reliability, ease of maintenance or cost. The latest technology is not necessarily the best choice for many systems, and in the case of automotive design has reached a point of breakdown. A new Ford EPAS steering gear costs around $1,900.00, compared to hydraulic at $300.00. Ford's EPAS have failed by the millions and offered customers nothing but trouble and expense.
      I own an old muscle car from the 70's; no computer, no engine electronics, no software. Most noted is fact this 70's vehicle has outlasted six brand new vehicles purchased over the years since. Vehicles designed and produced today include engineering implementations with quality level of coffee makers.
      Old school!

      Bah! Airplanes probably have 15000 lines of code between the yoke and the flight control surfaces.

      This is true and also tragic, Comparing Boeing or Lockheed engineers, to Ford or GM engineers is like comparing spacecraft to Lego's.
      I think they are still searching for that Boeing flight MH370 that flew off into oblivion over Malaysia. Personally I would prefer a mechanical joystick break off in my hand; over software error initiating command to nose-dive. At least the problem would be immediately understood.

      K Smith You do not have to be that dramatic dude. Really, most of todays car's throttle do not even have a cable, those are fly-by-wire, what do you have to say about that ? where do you think the term FLY-BY-WIRE comes from? What about Parking Brake ? Electric too! No problem so far. 4WD systems ? With the touch of a button too! The first car with electric power steering system appeared in 1988 in a SUZUKI

      I was an electronic design engineer for over 35 years in robotics, automotive and aerospace. I remember one of the first CAN bus based DBW systems in automotive implementations. I also recall the first throttle pedal mechanically disconnected from the engine, and the first scanning LIDAR based autonomous vehicle. These concepts, though innovative and technically advanced; represent departure from simplistic, reliable and elegant design. Engineers often pursue ever more complex and technically advanced implementations; failing to understand or appreciate the beauty of design based on simplistic intrinsic philosophies. My entire professional career was built around high technology and complex implementations. I have come to appreciate the wisdom of de-escalation of technology in critical high-reliability implementations, and learned first hand that complex technology is not always the answer to ever-more challenging design problems. Replacing a simple hydraulic valve with 900 transistors, microprocessors, digital logic and code; is just plain dumb.

      +James Myers I believe the point Joe was making is that EPAS is computer controlled and very susceptible to being hacked., government or otherwise.

      +brthdan okay the way he worded his statement made me think he was referring to the auto crisis. This system possibly can be hacked by anyone not just the government.

      That was my point. There's no reason for computer controlled anything in automobiles, just more siht to go wrong, and just adds to the price. For the do-it-yourselfer, it makes fixing your own car a real hassle. Besides I don't trust the government any further than I can projectile vomit. That's the only reason for this crap, for more government control. I give you Apple v. The FBI.

    I have mixed power steering: electric pump, that pumps fluid when it needs to, without making contant pressure by belt.

    I just bought a 2012 Acura TL. It is the first car that I've ever driven that has electrical steering boost. It does feel very different than conventional power steering. I sense that it gives a very different feedback. It doesn't push back as hard but it is very responsive. Switching back and forth between my car that has conventional power steering does make me notice the difference. The electric steering is just different; no better and no worse.

    Hey Scottie, Ford had a system called VAPS or Variable Assist Power Steering that was an option on some vehicles in the Mid-90's. I had a VAPS equipped Ford Taurus few years back. What the system would do is reduce Power steering hydraulic fluid input at higher speeds giving more stable steering, especially when cornering at higher speeds. The system was also fully hydraulically assisted. From my experience, the sloppiness in steering boxes usually comes from the gearbox itself, exacerbated by air caused by pump cavitation allowing the hydraulic system to lose its efficacy and "direct" feel. Loose tolerances and poor manufacturing quality lead to this especially in vehicles produced in the late 80's to 90's. That being said, I currently have a Mazda 3 that has Hydraulic power steering but it uses an electric pump (I'd imagine that the mustang is the same way). It's got great road feel for a budget minded car. They just figured out a better way to control the fluid flow with an electric pump rather than running a belt drive pump off the engine speed and using bleed valves to reduce pressure or flow like VAPS did. Just thought I'd share!

    My Saturn had electronic steering it was the best. My Prius also has E steering and I have to say I am very pleased with the Prius steering. I don't drive the prius as I drove the saturn but there have been times I got in a hurry in the prius.

    from memory the JDM toyota celica Fifth generation had adjustable power steering for there 4ws version which you can change it from sport mode to normal mode it could be a cut off/out for the rear steer though
    i remember playing with this switch and it didn't do much by turning lock to lock, i assume that it works when moving at speed
