Hey all! I was a little worried about this video coming off as me just reading a bunch of Wikipedia articles, but I've come to view it as me consolidating all of the information from the Wikipedia category into an easy to consume format. I hope y'all enjoy! ALSO IMPORTANT EDITING NOTE: The bit at 0:26 was meant to come off as me saying "Wh-What?" and not "W". I would never call what Wikipedia tells me a "W". I apologize for that slight editing oversight! UPDATE: A few people have expressed dissatisfaction with the "This section contains..." disclaimers that are in a few sections of this video. Truth be told, they're really only there to justify the big ol' "WARNING" at the beginning of the video, which I mainly included because of one specific section in the middle of the video (you know the one). I definitely agree that they were a bit excessive and unnecessary in places, but I also ultimately don't see the harm in a few silent, easily ignored lines of text. Either way, you have my word that I'll employ them more selectively (if at all) in later videos. As for the "No Russian" section, the dedicated disclaimer and impartial way I wrote it was actually due to the suggestion of some friends. I really didn't want to make light of or sensationalize the subject of the level, and some friends of mine helped me write the section. Ultimately talking about that level is a lose-lose that's bound to not sit right with someone SOMEWHERE, so I hope y'all enjoy the video regardless.

Come to think of it, 1-1 itself doesn't really get constantly referred to the way Green Hill is, probably because it's a lot more generic as every "overworld" level looks the same as it with different architecture. SMB as a whole gets endless references, of course, but 1-1 itself? It was a multiplayer map in New SMB, a stage in Smash, and is the default level in the Mario Makers, but honestly... that's about it?
What probably actually "killed" adventure games is that with rise of 3D action adventure games, suddenly the biggest advantage of adventure games - great storytelling - pretty much vanished. After all, games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid or Ocarina of Time are all renowned for their storytelling while having mostly action gameplay. And that also resulted in studios that were making adventure games to shift gears - Sierra pivoted to publishing shooters like Half Life, SWAT or Alien versus Predator; while LucasArts pivoted to making almost exclusively Star Wars games. I completely agree about the water temple being one of the best dungeons on the game. It’s definitely a dungeon where you have to exercise your spatial awareness. I remember watching a video challenging the whole “was is that bad?” and it really came down to OoT being a lot of people’s first experience with a 3D environment so it was confusing to them. I played OoT after many years of 3D games and I finished the water temple the same day I entered it. Hitman 2016 Sapienza and Hokkaido absolutely deserved their own segment they were not standalone releases. I'm gonna be honest, OoT3D making swapping the iron boots on and off a quick and easy button press actually GREATLY improves the Water Temple for me. I actually love the way the temple itself is designed. It has the difficulty I'd expect from a late game dungeon, requiring the player to do plenty of critical thinking on top of keeping track of where you've been and where you may have missed something. That key that's under the platform in the central tower is such a devious hiding spot because you're more focused at first on going up, so you don't even think to look back down after that platform gets brought up with the water. I dunno, I never had any issues with the dungeon itself honestly. It was literally JUST the iron boots that made it a pain in the ass, and they fixed that in 3D, and in recent years, it's an option in the game's unofficial PC port as well.
I never found the Bloody Baron all that profound and I mostly thought it was just funny that the Baron carries around a goblin baby like it has a dirty diaper.

I think "No Russian" is a very interesting example of that era of Call of Duty. It has the bombast and shock value of the Nuke sequence in COD4, but it also is interesting as a level itself. The fact that you can actively abstain from the violence puts a lot of self question into the player on if they are doing the right thing at all. It also, interestingly, asks the question of how responsible are under cover agents if they are involved in these types of events? If a CIA agent was directly involved in a terror attack, regardless of what they actually did during it, it makes you wonder if this sort of thing is even necessary. At what point does espionage become terrorism? The Metal Gear series also likes to indulge in the philosophy of warfare, but I always felt that it failed to really punch you in the chest with those questions. No Russian does. You are forced to come to grips with your own actions and truly understand that, even in the funny "protect the burger town" game, your actions have consequences and war will take the lives of anybody at any time and any place.
I think the infamy of the water temple mostly comes from the fact that everyone has played Ocarina of Time so everyone has gotten stuck on it. Long time Zelda fans would know that there are many other levels in other games just as tedious if not more tedious. For instance, in A Link to the Past, there's a dungeon made completely of ice that causes you to slip into enemies and cracks all throughout the dungeon, while in Majora's Mask there's another water temple similar to the one in Ocarina of Time, but with a time limit.
The Bloody Baron quest in Witcher 3 was some of my favorite storytelling in an rpg. Granted, I have not played a lot of rpgs, and my favorite storytelling game goes to Red Dead Redemption 2, but Blood Baron’s quest was the point that made me see what the hype was when it came to Witcher 3. Absolutely phenomenal game and I’m very glad I got around to completing all of it including the dlcs earlier this year.
Not sure if this really counts as a level, but if you were to make a sequel to this video, there's a Wikipedia page dedicated to Dracula's Castle from specifically Symphony of the Night, with most of the page actually just talking about certain spoilers
If it were part of a b-plot in a sitcom instead of an honest-to-god puzzle, the cat hair mustache would actually be hilarious. I love the idea of using a fake mustache to disguise yourself as someone who doesn't have a mustache.
This one sorta counts for the list but not fully. The Goat Puzzle from Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars. Now this is more of a singular puzzle rather then a full level but it does have its own page on Wikipedia
A part of me wants to suggest making a page on Brinstar from Metroid 1 (for the way it played with the trope of going right by forcing you to go left at the very start), and MAYBE the Ruins from Undertale. To be honest it's not easy to come up with these kinds of things lmao.
23:04 the problem is that it gives you the option to participate it gives the wrong idea and if you didn’t know you could skip it you’re likely going to shoot in the shooter game. Like the idea is sound and I admire the intention but it undermined itself by it not being a cutscene
I'm definitely inclined to agree. I wanted to be impartial in the video but I unfortunately think that it's a mission which has only progressively aged worse as time has gone on.
"You're likely going to shoot in the shooter game" well, You're completly right about that i can't disagree, but what made the mission special is that You're shooting damn civilians
I do think boiling down sapienza and hokkaido from hitman as "standalone expansions" doesnt feel right. Sapienza is the second level in the reboot. Hokkaido is the finale of the first reboot-game. There are 3 levels between them that do not have their own wikipedia page that would very much count as "standalone expansion" by the same definition. These 2 are just exceptionally well designed levels and the most iconic and memorable part of the hitman reboot
do need to note that midgar is Not the primary setting of ff7, only the first remake game. midgar is only like half of the first disc of the original release. yes this is pedantic
Yeah, the guy doesn’t have a mustache, but you don’t otherwise look anything like the guy, and the ridiculous mustache draws attention away from the rest of the face.
Looks like he picked like 40 of his favorite games then thought about the best levels for the game, then looked at “best levels of all times” lists then added what he thinks should be on there based on his own opinion. That’s just what it looks like to me.

Man what a fascinating video!
what an interesting idea for a video
I never knew that No russian is banned in Russia. We still had played that level and mostly liked it.
22:12 it was in 2009's Modern Warfare 2, which is a bit funny because you correctly identified it earlier in your discussion of it.
this is such an interesting vid topic im loving on this video ngl
I remember as a kid I thought the Chernobyl-Desaster was a fictional event that only happened in Call of Duty because of that Level.
First time I ever played the Suicide Mission of Mass Effect 2 is one of my all-time favorite gaming memories.
Not sure if this really counts as a level, but if you were to make a sequel to this video, there's a Wikipedia page dedicated to Dracula's Castle from specifically Symphony of the Night, with most of the page actually just talking about certain spoilers
Cycle nuts...

If there's one thing I learned from this is that I was 1 of 2 people that didn't know about the cow level
Yoshinori Kitase is the writer for final fantasy 6. The composer is Nobuo Uematsu.
Silent Cartographer makes sense considering it was the demo.
Great video - good job algorithm
I would have included The Goat Puzzle
OPERA HOUSE MENTIONED 🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I thought this was about game levels that had Wikipedia articles in it, like as hidden text or something
Believe it or not, I was not aware of the Diablo cow level. Probably helps that I'm mostly a console gamer.
Yeah more of this, please!
A part of me wants to suggest making a page on Brinstar from Metroid 1 (for the way it played with the trope of going right by forcing you to go left at the very start), and MAYBE the Ruins from Undertale. To be honest it's not easy to come up with these kinds of things lmao.
Oh hey I found another fan of just simply browsing Wikipedia
23:04 the problem is that it gives you the option to participate it gives the wrong idea and if you didn’t know you could skip it you’re likely going to shoot in the shooter game.
Like the idea is sound and I admire the intention but it undermined itself by it not being a cutscene
I'm definitely inclined to agree. I wanted to be impartial in the video but I unfortunately think that it's a mission which has only progressively aged worse as time has gone on.
Wouldnt that take away from the interactive storytelling?
@@maydaymemer4660 not if you set the actual gameplay after the massacre
"You're likely going to shoot in the shooter game" well, You're completly right about that i can't disagree, but what made the mission special is that You're shooting damn civilians
And thus, Spec Ops The Line was born
i am a simple person, i see psychonauts in the thumbnail, i click
Add one to the list of "things developers have apologized for adding", right alongside the Sonic 3 barrel.
the water temple is honestly one of the best dungeons in ocarina of time i will literally fight every gamer on the planet for this.
and milkman conspiracy is peak gaming
Talking 3ds version and id agree with you. Kid me gave up and started over the 64 version 3 times because of that level before finally beating it.
Either I didn’t catch it or it was added after this was made but Hokkaido from Hitman 2016 is missing
Is the Titanfall 2 level unique? Dishonored 2, from the same year, has a level with a very similar gimmick.
This is a great list!
The Opera House was referenced in Undertale for certain.
Glad Daffy Duck took the time to make this video
21:30 ITS A VIDEO GAME
ITS FICTION
WHAT IS THERE TO SENSATIONALIZE
do need to note that midgar is Not the primary setting of ff7, only the first remake game. midgar is only like half of the first disc of the original release. yes this is pedantic
this is a weird weapon subcategory
Papu's Pyramid. If you know, you know.
Yeah, the guy doesn’t have a mustache, but you don’t otherwise look anything like the guy, and the ridiculous mustache draws attention away from the rest of the face.
This is unintentionally hilarious.
Explain
Why
What are you talking about
Durring the serrious parts of the video, the TF2 fonts broke the tone so badly
Six of these levels are ones I made :u
I may just have to make more articles to make this video outdated
i could never beat ultros in that section.
AN HFTF REFERENCE IN THE INTRO?? OH MY GOD!!! I LOVE THAT GAME!!!!
I would have guessed mario 4-2 over 1-1. Maybe I watch too many speed runs.
Two levels from the soulsborne series? Seems like Wikipedia has a bias
Hell, there are two puzzles from the same Gabriel Knight game on Wikipedia, talk about bias

Looks like he picked like 40 of his favorite games then thought about the best levels for the game, then looked at “best levels of all times” lists then added what he thinks should be on there based on his own opinion. That’s just what it looks like to me.
