Here's how I interpret this scene: at the end of the series, after everything that happened, Patty cannot decide if she regrets what she's done, or will just take it in stride like she used to. When she imagine Ellen thanking her, it's not just for all the help and growth that Patty gave Ellen in her career, but for helping Ellen make the choice that Patty never could: to put aside her power and put her family first. As we recall, Patty chose to have a miscarriage in order to continue her career, and has always put her career first. She's jealous that Ellen made that choice and broken over never getting her own family back, but also she is relieved that she was an example to Ellen, and that Ellen will not make the same mistakes that she did.
At the same time, Ellen believes on the surface that she is happy as a mother, but we cannot tell that for sure. Seeing Patty, she's reminded of all the sins she committed in order to win against Patty. She will always be haunted by the fact that she is capable of the same things as Patty, and perhaps will feel trapped by her fate as a mother.
In the end, it's a perfect finale that showcases the fact that no matter what path we chose, we will never be free of the past and will never be entirely happy with the life we've chosen for ourselves.

Good analysis. They sure made us think. Regret can be an extremely horrible emotion. You can see the regret on both of their faces. They know they are intertwined forever. I think there's something symbolic about Ellen's daughter running across the store and throwing the box on the floor. I can't put my finger on it, but why would they do that? Instead, Ellen could have just heard Patty say " Hughes" and turn around.

Glen Close's face this whole clip: masterclass. She was robbed of her Emmy

When I first watched this, I thought that this scene was unnecessary. But when watching it again it all makes sense. This is perfection. Patty creates a delusion where Ellen is almost afraid to approach her (like season one's wedding invitation) and thank her. It's almost as if Patty needed justification for her life decisions. But it's a dream, and she reflects and seems to regret. All that remains is her firm, and soon her steel face returns to fight another case. Because that's Patty.

God. Glenn Close was amazing this whole season but in this ep ? Just WOW.
We had a terrific ending. The show entirely relies on both of their acting and it works so well. This close up is already a reference.

Why did this show end....it was the best thing going? Fucking Glenn Close is THE BEST ACTRESS of them all. Nobody touches her level of acting. She actually becomes another person even though you know it is Glenn Close.

I love the way they ended this. In her twisted mind Patty wants to believe she did Ellen a favour by making her another version of herself. Yet in the very last seconds we see a glimpse of regret in her eyes. She's all alone. No family. No husband. No friends. Just her job. "Take me to the office." That's all Patty has left.

Patty's face says it all. Ellen won. The heartbreak on her face is palpable. You can see the depths of her sorrow and regret with no words spoken. That's talent.

Makes patty seem somewhat human, as if a "thank you" from Ellen absolves her all of the wrong doing and manipulation. The fact that she fantasized about it shows she really needs that "thank you" as this is one of the most endearing and simple gestures a person can offer up. However, reality sets in, and she is back to "Patty" and God have mercy on everyone's soul

SPOILER: The more I think about it as well, there was some sort of 'justice' to Michael dying - there was certainly a parallel there to David's murder. Patty's breakdown at the police station can easily be compared to Ellen's breakdown in the bathroom in season one. Now they have both lost someone they loved amidst their legal games.

I just made a comment doing the same comparison with the Devil wears Prada! The Devil is a more optimistic vision. Damages end in a haunting vision.

@victoriakapshaw patty is alone. All she has is work. As Michael said in another season, everyone who loves her either leaves or dies. This came true by the series finale. She imagines the scene with Ellen because thats what she wants to happen. She wants to feel like she made Ellen a great lawyer. She wants Ellen to feel like she owes something to her, but its not the truth. Ellen moved on. She has nothing but her work.

I also did not love this scene at first and would have preferred the ending on the dock, and sometimes I think that would have been a better ending (if they ever decided to revisit the series), I am not sure that Ellen would have quit being a lawyer, however the last scene with Patty's changing expressions is amazing.

Why no one mentions the obvious romantic (not sexual nor physical) love between these two characters baffles me. From the first episode, Ellen has been drawn to Patty who responds with equal passion--they're magnetically attracted. The last shot is a woman spurned and turned to stone.

I was pissed off the writers would have Ellen give all the evidence of her attempted murder to Patty at the end. But then I thought about it and realized that in some way that would be exactly what Ellen would and should do. The man that murdered Patty's son was hired by Patty. So there is nothing Patty can do about it. And that HAS to have destroyed her inside. She loses her daughter to a miscarriage and Michael to murder. And her make-up daughter won't even say hi years later. OUCH!
