  • Catching people talking about me in foreign languages
It's quite uncommon for an American to speak a second language, let alone the local language of countries in Asia. And to be fair, languages in Asian countries are often quite difficult for a native English speaker to learn, as they often contain tones, different grammatical structures, etc. I happen to speak both Vietnamese and Mandarin Chinese, and having lived in both countries, I've gotten fairly used to people talking about me. For me the most part, it's never bad. People often point out what I'm doing, or compliment my "incredible good looks" (wink wink). I typically just smile and don't say anything, but sometimes fate has it that they learn I speak the language anyway after they've said a lot of stuff. This happened to be one of those days, hahah. Hope you enjoy.

I was listening to the tones as they spoke together. Not that I have any experience with the language but I'm aware it's tonal. That is, meaning can change drastically using the same "word" but in a different tone.
In English we can imply mood with tone but the actual meaning of our words don't change with tone.

I lived in rural Viet Nam for a year and traveled to many places. Almost everyone I met was warm and friendly like this woman. In cafes, on planes, in parks, almost everywhere I went, people would join me to chat and offer me food. I even got invited to stranger's weddings. My Vietnamese was very basic but we often communicated well with very little shared language. I highly recommend it to anyone as one of the best places to travel in the world. It is especially wonderful when you get away from the tourist areas into the back streets of the cities or to the rural areas.

Vietnamese is severely underrated in terms of it's difficulty to learn and would probably rank harder than Mandarin if it weren't for the difficulty of Chinese characters.

Lovely video mate! It just goes to show that whatever country you're visiting people really appreciate if you've taken the time to learn their language. Even if it's just please & thank you, it makes a huge difference.
In many countries people enjoy getting to practice their English with a native speaker but to break the ice being aware of local customs & taboos and having the basics of their language shows respect and will open doors that are closed to people who expect English to be spoken everywhere.
That café is a little jewel! The food looked amazing!

Aww, she WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU AND SHE REMEMBERED YOU!! ❤❤❤. Because of you, her business started to boom and she was SO THANKFUL. ❤👍🌹. She wanted to show you off to all of her friends and family. You are a celebrity! Everyone wants to know you and she was so proud that you came to her place and you gave her restaurant great reviews which gave her success. Being nice to someone and having great food and friendly service has wonderful benefits. She is genuine and she really was super nice and she remembers good customers. It was nice of you to go back more for a visit and for the food secondary. The dishes really looked delicious. I'm NOT A FAN OF SHOYU plus I'm allergic to soy, so I'd LOVE THE VINEGAR AND THE HOT PEPPERS IN THE OIL! YUMMY, YUMMY, YUMMY! Plus, the hot green peppers, more kick! Not super hot, it depends upon how many rings are added. And I love shrimp, prawns, it's all good to me. My niece is adopted and she spoke only Cantonese when she was adopted. My sister studied Mandarin for months not knowing this. 🤣😆😁😂! Great. My sister and I are half Japanese. She knows ZERO Japanese. I know more than I think, but I can't speak, I can sort of follow along and say a word or two. My BIL and father, both military men, do not and did not want their children learning Asian languages for some reason. Sabotage perhaps? I don't know. It's strange. However, my Japanese relatives were amazed that I knew some Japanese. Their eyeballs nearly fell out of their heads when I said one word which was "goodnight" to them. I'm super impressed that you learned a difficult language and that you are using it. Plus, you are so kind hearted and went to see the nice lady at her restaurant. She really was immensely thankful to you and was so happy to see you again! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!!! I'll subscribe!!! ❤❤❤🌸🌹👍!

Most of the people I graduated university with 12 years ago rushed into the rat race and marriage, and now many of them have retrained in other careers and I am no worse off than they are. The race is only with yourself. I would not trade trekking the Sahara, sleeping in the Amazon, living in Tunisia, food tours in Singapore, and any other adventures I had for any position or amount of money. Get out there kiddos! 😍

Most time I spent with another culture was visiting my girlfriends family often in S.F. They were Chinese and while not in China, still had a very different way of day to day living and attitude about life. I loved the way everything seemed to revolve around food. We were either sitting at home talking and snacking on things from the market, going to the market to browse, or cooking a meal for her family (8 people every night). Everything was done deliberately and with ease whereas a lot of American households bicker about food prep or where to eat, what to eat. They were most hospitable and reserved. I learned alot about peace through clarity of process. I wish I picked up a little Cantonese while I was with them 😄

Got the opportunity to visit Vietnam back in 2019 (not to Ho Chi Minh City though but Hanoi) by train for a summit and absolutely loved it. Chinese influence in Vietnam isn't surprising when you know the history. The Vietnamese language was historically written in Chữ Nôm, which is a logographic script that uses Chinese characters. But they ended up changing to a Latin script as a result of French colonization (though the language is still very much influenced by Chinese on top of French). The ancient Chinese brought cultural, religious and philosophical thought to Vietnam, where the Vietnamese gradually developed and adapted on its own

When you corrected your "we are back here in China's...... er, I'm sorry, Saigon's big market......" did you say "Cholon"? I understand Cholon to have been for generations a community of Chinese-Vietnamese heritage........ a family who'd been rescued at sea in 1979 were given asylum in USA. From 240 souls aboard to a mere 76 survivors, I was so lucky to befriend their son in the architectural program in college. I loved taking to them as much fresh-caught fish and crabs as I could; they were reaching their senior years, very isolated in their apartment. His mother's smile lit up the entire room when I"d come with the bushel. She made so many foods I'd never imagined, even the fish sauce (ngoc mam, I think?) was just incredible. You're in a spot on the planet I'd love to stand on..... have to resume watching later but "envy envy envy" :) My intrigue with foreign languages is constantly in gear....... as you say in description "It's quite uncommon for an American to speak a second language......". English is one of the most recently developed languages on Earth........ around 1050 AD, created by the king of England who'd never lived on British soil, but in France, I presume that French has a slightly more significant influence than Spanish which I"ve long believed to be the greatest influence of all to English. Regardless, there is surely no small number of Americans who can't be convinced the Bible wasn't written in English. And nope, Jesus didn't speak English...... missed that by 1,000+ years. But whattaya know....... "all them immigrants......" speak TWICE as many languages as nearly every American, and in some cases 3x when you add their indigenous dialects.

I’d say I’m pretty decent at Thai after learning for 6 months. Enough to order food, talk everyday conversations, say what I like and dislike, and lots of curses 😅 lol! I speak with a native at least 2-3 times per week via Preply, Instagram, and Facebook, and use online resources like RUclips, Mondly, and Pimsleur. Very cute video, Chris. And that woman was so happy to see you again. God bless her. Showing no matter what culture, religion, or skin color… None of that matters. We are all the same inside and out and it’s not the people of the world that, create the issues… It’s the politicians. According to the politicians, we are all at war all of the time, and every country hates every other country… Yet, when you see videos like this, and others of the interaction between different people from different cultures and countries… you see humanity at its best.
Unfortunately, I don’t know Vietnamese or Chinese… Because I would fly over there specifically to hang out with grandma. She seems like she would be a blast to sit down and talk to about her life and growing up. Chris, you are very blessed. Savor every single moment and live every second of every day to the fullest. Never take anything for granted, and when you get a chance to love… Love with every ounce of your heart. We all only have so much time on this earth. So we need to spend it as freely and open as possible. Drink every drop of life in and don’t miss one experience. Because we never know when that experience will be our last. No regrets, only inspiration and aspirations.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and have a happy new year.
