  • A New Life To Save 🐘 FULL STORY: herd.org.za/bl...
Little Phabeni is an orphaned four-month-old elephant that was rescued in November 2023. One morning, a woman living near the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, on the park's boundary at Crocodile River, woke up to find an elephant calf in her property. There was no sign of his mother or herd.
The woman wanted to do the right thing and asked us how she could go about giving the calf milk. It is not an easy task to raise a baby elephant orphan, and is much better done by a dedicated elephant orphanage like HERD. It is a difficult process as in the longterm the baby will become an adult elephant that needs a family. Giving a calf milk is always tricky and giving the wrong milk can be fatal - even if it is only once.
Officials from Nature Conservation at the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency were sent to the scene and while en route contacted us at HERD to ask if we could step in to help. Having a request from Nature Conservation directly is much easier when it comes to getting the right paperwork for an export permit. This permit is needed to transport the elephant from Mpumalanga, in this case, to the Limpopo province where HERD is situated. Paperwork is essential in moving wild animals as you need permits in order to avoid and restrain the illegal movement of animals and animal parts.
While this was happening, wildlife vets from the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, including Chris Hobkirk - who in fact helped rescue Khanyisa - were called to help tranquilise the baby for transport. Nature Conservation had a big crate for rhinos and could accommodate the little elephant.
"One of the vets made contact with me, as he wanted to know what I suggested he give the baby, based on our usual operating procedures," says Adine. "I really appreciated this as tranquilising wildlife is tricky business and how you go about it creates different after-effects. We discussed our estimates for the calf's weight based on what I saw on the videos and photos sent to me, and what I had experienced in the past. The calf was tranquilised and loaded into the crate. The vet handed a top-up tranquiliser to the team, as this would be needed for the trip to HERD. We didn't want to give the calf too much at once, as any sedation always has its risks. The vet also confirmed with me that the elephant had small injuries that will likely heal easily."
With the help of the veterinarians, the calf was transported to Kruger National Park's Phabeni gate, where the HERD team was waiting for him.

Why oh why would the South African authorities consider killing this baby? Especially since they know elephants are endangered and there are so many organizations involved in conservation and saving the elephants. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Please if anyone can explain this please do!

I get the logistics and cost of moving him, and that they can't release a milk dependent baby into the Kruger Park on his own (he wouldn't last long against predators), but this is why we have places like HERD and HESC. I'm so excited about the new baby Phabeni! Thank you for rescuing him and to the wonderful lady who called for help from the Herd to take this little one. Stavros and Adine...you are irreplaceable along with all the Carers at the Herd. I can't wait to watch this little boy grow and play with Khanyisa! He's going to get such good care. I can't help but feel sorry for his Mama who is probably missing him terribly, but he will grow and thrive with the special care he receives from Adine, Stavros and all the wonderful Carers.

Relieved to know he's safely at jabulani HERD where he'll be lived and cared for. Joshua Tigere and Stavros, thank you for your loving kindness and reassurance to phabeni. I'm so glad hes safe and warm and fed. I noticed the milk looked like a coffee colour and was wondering what sort of milk phabeni is having ? What a blessing each one of you are to jabulani HERD. God bless you in Jesus Christ name Amen . Can't wait to see him settled and thriving.

They estimate Phabeni is about 4 months old. Not intending to be offensive here, but at 4 months in the wild baby elephants will naturally consume certain things.
The bottles he'll be fed for several weeks are call "Shit Shakes". They take some of the dung from one of the healthy adult elephants in the herd and mix a portion of it in his bottles along with milk formula and a few other ingredients. They will also hand feed him some of the dung directly. The baby elephants need to ingest the dung to develop healthy bacteria in their gut. Their milk formula during their first year, in particular, changes several times. Adine, who loves the elephants with her whole heart, performed alot of research and spoke to a number of large animal veterinarians to develop just the right formulas for Khanyisa over the last 3 and a half years and they will now use the formulas they developed with Phabeni. I'm excited to watch this new baby grow and be welcomed into the Jabulani Herd.

@catherinethomas1276 Adine has mentioned this before in videos, and again in the live feed yesterday...in the baby's milk they add dung from other herd members as it helps their gut area. That's why milk looks brownish. Baby elephants will also eat dung which helps with digestion. You may recall videos of Khanyisa doing that very thing when she was very young. They call them "poop shakes" or "s**t shakes."

Thank you Adine and every one at HERD for introducing us to little Phabeni and for giving another baby Ellie the chance to grow surrounded by love and a Herd of his own. We will never know what caused him to be separated from his mother and family herd. But seeing the protective behavior of the HERD'S own Ellie's especially the females, but also the males when they rush to surround Khanyisa and the other youngsters putting themselves between the babies of the herd and any danger. I don't believe Phabeni's mother and her herd would have willingly left him behind. It must have been beyond their control and his mother would have been very traumatized by his loss. Being so small It is a miracle and a blessing that he was found with only minor wounds and mainly unharmed and he will not have to suffer the physical trauma from deep wounds like Khanyisa and Fenya suffered when found. Thank you for reminding us that Baby Ellie's are very fragile and to take each day he gets stronger and healthier as a blessing. Thank you to the lady who found him and started his rescue. With HERDS care and love and the guidance and love from the Elephants of the herd he will grow into the Majestic bull he was always meant to be and live a long healthy life. Does the Herd realise there is a new baby in the Orphanage ? I assume they would if they can smell or hear him. Can you may be explain (at some stage) what changes in behavior you can see in the Herd at this early stage while he is in quarantine that lets you know they are aware another baby Ellie is near by and how you help the Herd especially the females cope if they are aware a distressed baby is near by especially before they get to meet him at the fence ? The love and joy evident on the carers faces knowing they were about to meet their new baby Ellie was heart warming. Watching Phabeni close his eyes as he suckled down his first bottles was both heart breaking and joyful.❤🐘

I am sad that it will never have it's original Mom or Herd, but relieved that the minute they had the baby at Herd, they fed it. You can see it's bones around it's face, and this is a clear sign of starvation. Stavros, Herman, Lammie and that soft touch Adine will help this baby thrive. The mystery is why his whole family would leave him is puzzling. I imagine that if the Mom wasn't killed by poachers, hunters, that she is mourning for him right now.
