Man...I got trouble with understanding of all kinds of hinges which one for this door and others for what.....what the hhhh! Now I got them all from this channel. Thank so much
Very clear and sensible. The templates are clever, and would be very useful if doing a lot of doors. What I most liked was the visual discussion in the beginning where you show how things fit together.
I think its great when video makers don't assume we know stuff that is common knowledge if you're in the trade. We watch youtube because we don't know this stuff. Great video, thanks.
Thank you. I got a mostly-made cabinet. I finished the drawers (never made them from scratch, but this was a chore). Now to hang the doors. Your video is great.
Thank you, your explanation of different overlays and cabinet types was super helpful and easy to understand. Really appreciate you making these videos.
I did just use the Kreg jig for drilling the holes for the Blum hinges. Worked great. I did not use the two little holes to locate the screws to fasten the hinge but rather placed the hinge and used the pilot bits you showed. I do not build anything for a living so the Kreg system is fine.
Okay very good info thanks, because hinges come is such a variety of styles and quality you could do a weekly video on that by it's self. And buy hinges from Amazon or China for lower cost some do not come with any INFO , so your setup (jig) could be a good starting point to have. I was looking for so information on how install a set cheap hinges and found a PDF from Blum that is 110 pages long (Concealed Hinges) so your help in this area is very much needed. Thanks for your time that you give to help newer wood workers. Mr D. Forth Worth TX.
Good tips. I use the easy disconnect Blum hinges. One tip you could try is using a straight edge across both hinge bases as you screw it down as that also helps to keep the pivot perfectly aligned. I think I will make some jigs like yours.
I have plans to make a secretary desk out of a bookcase, with cupboards below that open to sit flush with the bookcase sides, so the desk flap sits on top of the cupboard doors. This video has been really helpful. Thanks!
Love the templates. I will try to make mine out of aluminum possibly since I am a fabricator by trade. (maybe even adjustable..?) I watched another video earlier which was kind of hoaky. Although, one good thing I did take from it was (on the door side) pressing a straight edge against both hinge flanges to square them instead of trying to eye ball them or having to layout the screw holes by hand. Not sure that will make sense when reading...
2:44 which hinges are these? Will they be strong enough to hold a 24" x 80" closet door, if I get enough of them? Where can they be purchased? Thank you so much!
that depends on the material the door is made from (ie; its weight, for example solid mdf is a little heavier than solid plywood, but a pine shaker panel door will be lighter) you might need 4 hinges per door for a closet door. It's usually the case no matter which hinges you use - but a good Blum hinge, will handle the weight of a large door better than the cheaper ones, but is still reasonably priced, readily available everywhere, in case you need a part later.
thank you for explaining this to a guy who is self educating himself on how to make cabinets. i just screwed up a small one i made for practice and got frustrated .... i should have watched this first
Great info and I loved the self-centering bit info. Will the insert hinges work on 3/8 inch plywood? sometimes the foster point can go through the door? I can only use the 3/8 thick material to build the little library project. Loved all the teaching here... And making a jig saves a bunch of money here, esp. when you only need it for ONE project!:) Cheers and thanks so much!!
Love your videos! Question, what hinge is this that you are using in the video, and, do you think it would work on a drop down door for a concealment shelf build?
@Inspire Woodcraft - Hi, is there a way to get more than a full overlay (where it hides the side of the cabinet)? And if so, would it be available on a frame and frameless? Thanks!
Awesome, very helpful video. We are going to replace all the hardware firm our kitchen cabinets and I will be able to use this video to help understand how to go about it.
Awesome video, Jodie, as usual. Lot's of tips that are useful for other tasks. One thinge you didn't explain was how to calculate the length of the cabinet template (you just gave the length you built). I presume that the cabinet template should be twice the overlay shorter than the door cabinet template. For example, if there is a 3/8" overlay top and bottom then the cabinet template should be 3/4" SHORTER than the door template. Correct?
After buying one piece surface mount soft close hinges and trying to install and adjust them, I'll gladly pay the 50% premium to use a quality hinge. For me, I went with Blum, yet the biggest reason was they adjust three ways and you can remove the door from the cabinet by un-clipping the hinge from the mount. I did shell out $30 for a Kreg concealed hinge template, which worked great. I made my own mount hole guide versus paying $8 for one, but I had the material and it only took an hour. One problem I did run into was that the package said they were half overlay (3/4 cabinet), but they only overlayed a maximum of 5/16 and I needed 3/8, so I'm figuring that issue out. Don't go cheap on your hinges!
Help, I am making a hidden cabinet behind a mirror. The mirror is the door. What kind of hinge can I use? The Mirror will be larger then the cabinet by at least two inches on each side and will be flush to the wall to hide the cabinet so the hinge will need to open away from the wall a little which is the problem since the mirror is larger then the cabinet the edge of the mirror will hit the wall when it opens if it's not the right kind of hinge. Any recommendations?
Nice video thx. I am looking for hinges to attach to a large mirror to cover a hidden pew pew room. The mirror will be 65" × 31" do you think these would work ? Thx
Very informative, thankyou. I have the same style 90degree hinges on a full overlay framess cabinet. On one set of doors i am needing to open the doors more to say 165-180degress. My question is, can i remove the existing 90degree hinges and replace it with a 165-180 degree hinge? Do i have to remove both the mount side and the hinge side? Thanks in advance
Would you ever use 2 different types of hinges on the same cabinet? We have new cabinets and the cabinet maker put 1 set of hinges on the left door and another set on the right door. They did this in our kitchen and 2 bathrooms. I'm not sure if they did it to save money but they are not giving a clear answer. Thoughts??
I personally wouldn’t unless I was somehow desperate or in a jamb. Of course I would have to see it in person to have a better idea, but one thing that comes to mind is that possibly one door opens a different way. Not because of the direction that it opens but maybe it needs to clear a hurdle, like a wall or another cabinet, when it opens and so maybe they need to install hinges that open a certain way. I would look for consistency within the inconsistency, so to speak. Are all the doors with mismatch hinges on a particular side? Are they all up against something? In my experience there isn’t a lot of money savings by going with a few extra sets of different hinges, but it could also be that they simply didn’t have enough of the one kind for the whole job, and used what they had to get the job done. If it was me, I would save all the odd hinges for one room with the least amount of cabinets. Shortcuts like that happen all the time because most “pros” assume that the one paying the bill won’t know the difference. Let me know if you figure it out. I’m really curious.
Hello, I have a question if you could answer this for me. I’m building a concealment case for a charity auction, I have the top part which is a wooden flag, it’s not extremely heavy but it’s kinda heavy, I need hinges that could go on the inside to hide the fact that it’s a “concealment” case. Which hinges should I use? Someone suggested a piano hinge because of the weight but it sits on the outside. Please help... 😫 thank you I could send you a picture of the project face “flag” if needed. Thank you 😊
Nicely done video! Question. Has anyone successfully attached European hinges to cinder block? I have an outdoor platform with solid wood doors I built. For design reasons, we have to use hidden hinges but there is no wood frame, just cinder block. Adding a wood frame would make the doors too far away from the concealed opening
Nice awl you've got there. Do you mind me asking who makes it or where I can find one? Been looking for something like that for an ice pick. Hope someone can let me know. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Funny you mentioned drawers because I planned on making a video about drawers when I did this (I was already making some at that time) and I didn't have time to film. I will add it to the list! Thank you!
What brand and model hinges do you like to use? I am getting to build kitchen cabinets for my sister in law, the cabinet I built I used Blume soft close hinges at 120 degree swing Great video
I think Blum is probably the way to go if I had the choice. A lot of times to save a couple bucks I use the Everbuilt ones (I think that's what they're called) and I've never had any problems. I think the biggest advantage to Blum is just the ease of adjustments like the cam adjusters and snap-together door-to-carcase assembly. But maybe it just depends on what level of hinges you get too.
But If I take apart the hinge, this 'knucklehead, will never get it back together! I can use this idea to make templates for the clocks, the issue is I will be using a 3" fortsner bit and controlling that thing... Well it can be a challenge so template like this is a great idea. Thanks Jodee!
Helllo! What do we do if we have an framed system with overlay where a lot of the frame is visible when the door is closed (is this the combination of systems/partial inset that you mention)? What hinges would we choose?
That sounds like a partial overlay, but it could be something special for the cabinets that you have. It's really hard to know without seeing it of course.
Great video and tip, only thing I would do different if I made the jig is put the hinge model or type with the jig, but that's just because I have the memory of a squirrel.
Ha! You and me both. Yeah I forgot to say that and I haven't even put them away yet, but that is a great idea! Especially if you don't need them again for a while.
8:15 I realized that contrary to the title, this video is never going to explain how to choose hinges. Good video on procedures for installing them though!
Man...I got trouble with understanding of all kinds of hinges which one for this door and others for what.....what the hhhh! Now I got them all from this channel. Thank so much

Self Centering Hinge Bit, I never knew it existed and thank you so much for sharing that tip. That will make my project so much easier. Thanks Bro!!
Just saw this - I like the durable version made from the paper template. I also have to give a thumbs-up on your "coffee" mug. I need one of those.
Thank you. I got a mostly-made cabinet. I finished the drawers (never made them from scratch, but this was a chore). Now to hang the doors. Your video is great.
Great job. And for once a video that moved at the right pace. Much appreciated by an English guy in France.
Very interesting job God bless you Shankar from Hyderabad India India
Good video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. Good information. By the way, I love the mug!!!
really really nicely done! Thanks Jodee!!
Thank you, your explanation of different overlays and cabinet types was super helpful and easy to understand. Really appreciate you making these videos.

Thanks for the video. Genuine, straight-forward, emphasis at where it needs to, no BS.

Just a simple question Jodee: What type of hinges did you use for the frameless cabinet?
Love the templates. I will try to make mine out of aluminum possibly since I am a fabricator by trade. (maybe even adjustable..?) I watched another video earlier which was kind of hoaky. Great video with tips! I learned in the 1st 2 minutes that my current cabinets can be flush to the frame with a full overlay hinge. Thank you!
Jody thus was very helpful as I am about to install Blum on a frame insert. Do you have a video for that?
Thank you, nice video, and nice one. Excellent and helpful video.
Very informative and explained very well. Thanks!
Great work!
I love your no bull shit approach to woodworking😂 Thanks

Are there shallow conceal soft close hinges for partial overlay doors?
Vinaka bro...really help me out on my DIY project😊

I like your coffee cup!
Simple and to the point, thank you. 😎
Nice info my friend you give me an idea the best
Dude, thank you for the tips! I'm definitely going to buy me a set of self centering drill bits. A must have!
Really helpful, thanks again.
Hello. I have framed cabinets. I want full overlay, which is 2”. Is there a hinge option for that?
Excellent video, especially liked how you added the measurements for your jig. Subscribed.
Do you think it be possible/advisable to add some material behind my face frame to make it compatible with frameless hinges?
Thanks for showing how and sharing that
Nice DeWalt radial arm saw in the background. I've got the same one. I'm currently restoring it. Great video.
Oh sweet! I can’t wait to get mine going. Actually all it needs is a blade and to be adjusted to the table. Thanks for watching!

Thanks man. I’m jumping in with my first cabinet doors this week. I’m going for the big ones (2440x 510) so i need all the help i can get!
What do you use to make the hole? AT your 6:14 time stamp? What can I use on my hand drill to make this hole?

Great vid. Would love to see the finished product of the computer cabinet you made
What kind/Brand of hinges did you use?
Where can I get that coffee cup?
Great informative video!
Great video. Cheers for tsaknig the time to do this. Great for someone like myself who knows next to nothing about hinges!
may cabinet is thickness is 3/4 " and the door is 1/2", any tips how to use that kind of hinge.
First time here; thank you for sharing. Good information on the cabinet type. I hope you have a video regarding to different types of hinges.
Thanks for the video. Your technique is great! Great Hat.

I'm not expert, but hold my beer and grab me some MasTek Self-Drilling Concrete Screws 1/4 x 3" with Steel Tungsten Carbide Tip and watch this!
Thank you for a very informative video.
AS always an excellent video, thank you
Thank you, that was helpful
Very nice!
What brand hinges full overlay to you use?
What brand hinges for full overlay frameless do you use?
Thanks for sharing! Your video is exactly what i need at the moment. More power to your channel!

From your channel, do you have drawer making and sliding drawer installation?
Not yet, sorry.
Helllo! What do we do if we have an framed system with overlay where a lot of the frame is visible when the door is closed (is this the combination of systems/partial inset that you mention)? What hinges would we choose?
Looks like we have an 3/8 of an inch overlay.
The current hinge after some research appears to be a Amerock 7530. However I am having a hard time finding any details on it.
That sounds like a partial overlay, but it could be something special for the cabinets that you have. It's really hard to know without seeing it of course.
it's nice to have limp bizkit explain to me how cabinet hinges work
Good video.
well explained
Thanks for the info I needed this
Hi mate
Can explain how to remove this hinge please?
Inspired
Great jig! I want to see the jig for framed cabinet.
I might be able to do that today!!
my hinges for my cabinets are on the outside (exposed) will i be able to easily change them to these conceled hinges?
You probably have a frame like mine. I think there is an concealed hinge that will hook and screw into inside lip of frame
