I only saw one booth selling seed starting gear (silicone pots) that wasn't a greenhouse, and I definitely would have snagged some 4 cells for up-potting my 6-cells. Would love to see more edible gardening booths and talks there next year!

    Was great to see you at the garden show. Glad you found where they moved your books, I knew they'd sell out!

    It is always hard to play catch up after travel - the garden grows so much in your absence! We have a ton of worms now too, I think all the rain really helps.
    I used to live near Seattle and I loved Pikes Place Market, my favorite was the fish vendor throwing the fish across the aisle!
    I definitely vote for the new stainless steel plant markers! I hate throwing the plastic ones away and they always break so fast. I have tried wood ones and they just get dark and hard to read, and the copper ones fade over time. Today I am enjoying the sunshine and putting together my new birdies beds!

    • @TheActiveLifeLived

      The garden never seems to grow that fast once you're chilling at home...go away for a week or 2, and they seem to get separation anxiety or something...boom!

  • @garchompy_1561
    @garchompy_1561 7 месяцев назад +6

    I think the stainless steel tags you showed will be a good "budget", but long lasting tag, but over time it will probably still rust in the wet, ion filled soil in the garden. will last longer than plastic for sure but theyre definately not going to be a "forever" thing I imagine.
    I have seen some porceline..? glazed clay..? whatever the material is called. That along with Glass or polished granite would probably make much longer lasting tags given the conditions, since all are basically (or literally) just rock. All of which would probably do quite well on the store, because imagine coloured glass markers, could have a chart in your greenhouse of what colour is which and then be able to look out and see at a glance which is which. I suppose you could do the same with the glazed clay ones. different coloured glazes, they would also be easy to read off of which the glass might struggle with.
    hope to see what ends up sticking though.

    • @GoingGreenMom
      @GoingGreenMom 7 месяцев назад +1

      I have been thinking about using some aluminum pop cans to cut up and make tags. Would be able to use stamp or something to label, or just use a garden marker or grease pencil on the. Being aluminum should avoid the rust issue, and still be durable while avoiding plastics.

      Hey James,what part/climate of NZ? Like, coastal, mountain, plains? Not sure how your hardiness zones compare to the US. I'm in northern New Mexico, 6900 feet, dry and sunny 280 days. Extra windy spring/autumn, but a relatively short growing season for tomatoes: late April to Early November before first frost.

    • @JTNZ333
      @JTNZ333 7 месяцев назад

      @@Neenerella333 I was in Auckland, so that's Zone 8a, with a South/East facing property that received not much Sun due to tall trees. It gets cold and humidity is high in autumn. *Note South/East facing would be your North/East facing equivalent there, so pretty shit.
      Chocolate sprinkles is a hybrid and hybrids will always do better than heritage, this is why it survived. I kept the seeds and they all stayed true to type considering it being a hybrid.

    I purchased garlic from Epic gardening, refrigerated them for way too long, planted all of the cloves even the not great ones. They sprouted within 10 days and were off to the garlic races. Then all of the California rain dumped on them. Multiple rain storms over the weeks that kept the from drying at any level. They started to look a little yellow but are now back to green and amazing! They are planted in rows and there are 4 blank areas where nothing came up so most of the cloves sprouted and are doing really well. I don’t know what the garlic head will be like but so far so good and very satisfying.

    Its great that your climate is about 2 weeks before mine. I can kind of judge my progress by the size of your seedlings in this video. I have a question about the linaria. I planted some in a 72 cell tray. I turned my back for 2 seconds and my little helper had dumped the entire pack of tiny seeds in the tray. Every single one sprouted. How do I keep them choking each other out before they are big enough to thin out? They are about an inch tall and blanketing the tray like microgreens. Also, are you hiring? I have a computer and a business degree. I think I could fill a slot on your team nicely. I have enjoyed watching you grow as a gardener and entrepreneur. I would love to be part of that.

    A lot of the stainless steel tags we use so much plastic once and then it is wasted. Trying to reuse the plastic tags it’s not the easiest thing.

    This video was fun with the little vlog! It's also nice to see how to handle not perfect or ideal seedlings.

    Love your montage of your time in Seattle 👍. I’ve grown Chocolate Sprinkles tomatoes for the past few years; great taste and quite productive. Grown in Alberta zone 3.

    I really like the way you are going with this channel.
    It's almost like we are right next to you when you are filming yourself doing some things in the garden while sharing some good knowledge and tips.
    You and Mark (the Dad Joke Gardener from Australia aka Self Sufficient Me 😁) were the first RUclips Gardeners that i found a few years ago and you both are still my favorites.
    Thank You so much for inspiring and showing all of us what you can achieve in the garden and in life! 🙏☀️

    I am jealous that you are able to start seeds so early and already have your seedlings so ready for transplant whenever the weather is right! I live in Central FL, so it's not an issue for most of the year, but our "winter" is sort of obnoxiously cold (for here..), can get a light frost if it gets in the low 30's. My garage is sweltering 10 months out of the year, and then frigid for 2 lol, so seed starting indoors has been a little challenging, though the heat mat seems to be helping. I was thinking about making a faux greenhouse out of some acrylic sheets fashioned together, I usually do about 2-3 of the epic trays per round, depending on time of year, so I think it is doable. May make a few small holes just to allow some ventilation.
    Sorry, long tangent, seedlings look great!

    Spring is coming, have the fever today for sure with 62F in zone 6a! Lots of blueberry bush pruning and fertilizing and acidifying happening over on the east coast! Great to see you guys.

    Garden looks great Kevin. I have found not thinning beets gives a decent second or even sometimes a third flush. They will push away from each other well and as you harvest it will allow others to take up space. Carrots obviously dont work out so well but baby veggies are so posh! 😂😊

    Look at your plants. ❤ Lo e the plant tags. 😁👍 Up here, it's up to 7°, and only 3 inches of snow on the ground. Getting close to time to plant seed trays. I'll start dropping seeds, in trays, next week.
