6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for RUclips. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free RUclips Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on RUclips.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
Every guitar player struggles with chord changes early on. It's the only thing keeping your playing sounding like the REAL thing, right? This video identifies the most common habits that are holding you back. You can conquer chords !! Видеоклипы
Jonathan Kehew is ready a good teacher from whom I can learn a lot chords. I like his good humor and a good way of explaining! I am 62 and just started playing a guitar about 2 weeks ago. Thanks to Jonathan, I am progressing quite slowly.
I appreciate that, aslamahmed2564! Please join me Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free RUclips livestream Q+A all about learning, playing, practicing, and caring for guitars. You can text me your questions LIVE ! Sat. 5pm ET on my RUclips channel ruclips.net/user/jkehew1. See you there ! (you can also watch later on my RUclips channel and soon it will be available as a podcast.) And please subscribe to my channel!
Jonathan I recently found your channel as I surfed through all the channels on playing guitar. I'm 73 years old (almost, next month) and had started learning to play as a teenager. I gave up guitar for girls and never picked up the guitar except on occasion. For Christmas my family bought me a new guitar that fit me. I've always had guitars in my house but had problems. My previous problem was the necks were all too small for my big hands, still somewhat of a problem but not like before. Of all the channels I've watched your's has been the most informative, you're easy to learn from and explain things real well. Thanks for starting this channel and all the best for in in 24.
Jonathan- love you, brother!... "Jonathan Kehew", "Paul Davids", and "Dave Simpson"..... (The only three, a budding guitarist needs!!!!)
gotta admit: was a bit surprised when you talked about dvds and youtube...the video kinda looks like it's from the 80s

This guy is a jewel in a sea of rocky places to learn from. One of the best guitar teachers I've ever come across. Thank you so much on getting my journey off to a better place. I'm more confident now ever, that one day, I'll be able to play like you.

Probably the best tuition video i've seen on changing chords on the entire internet, very well presented, great manner, clear and concise, thank you jkehew1
I love that there is as much explaining as there is playing.Usually in other tutorials, there is a lot of playing and less explaining.Great video!!!!Just stumbled on it and am really hoping there are more.
Fortunate Anane Yes, I'm working on more videos and a new website !
so glad i found your video. I decided to take up the guitar as a hobby a couple of weeks ago and these are the chords i'm working on. it's slow going, sore fingers and all, but this makes it easier. thanks so much for posting this!
Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my request. I am very grateful. The video is really helpful but again he just explain what you should do with your left hand witch I learn already. I know what my left hand should do I just don't have the ability to make out what my right hand should do .I love your lessons they helped me a lot with my learning process. If you ever have the time to look at the picking pattern only for the live version intros will be amazing. I'll keep monitoring in the future. Thank you so much
This video is pure gold! Very easy to follow along with. You are a one of a kind instructor. Thank you.

Very interesting and well explained better than many other teachers I have watched. You certainly make a person feel confident. Cheers. Llewellyn, Swansea UK
The best teacher I have found on the internet. You can't go wrong watching, listening, and learning. His wife also does a great job with the camera! I have learned so much from these videos!
Frank Cerrone You made my wife's day !
This is the best C to G chord change tutorial I've seen. Especially leading with your second and third finger, and keeping the pinky out of the way, which is something I figured out for myself through trial and error.
Good job, LB906!

I just have to say this was hands down the best tutorial I have watched to date... ive always been a music lover but no musical talents, so when I was given an electric guitar I thought I better make use of it 😎 so after about 3 months now I went as far as I could go but hit a wall Im still learning chords but am getting so frustrated when trying to change between them my brain was talking but my fingers weren't listening lol but now ive watched ur lesson I have renewed hope theres still a chance for me lol Also i love how ur so flexible not demanding strict adherence to every rule... Ive just subscribed and can't wait to watch the rest... Thank You So Much xoxo

Just found your videos. I'm a long time but often frustrated player who hit a wall and hasn't been able to make much progress. Thanks for the clear and easy to understand instructions. I look forward to following up with your lessons.
P.G. Keller Hi P.G. I know that wall well ! Hang in there and be patient (and creative!) Please subscribe to my RUclips channel: jkehew1. New videos and a new website are on the way.
Thanks a ton Jonathan... This is by far the easiest and the best video I've seen on RUclips to shift chords! You Rock!
Sukhish Puri Awesome ! Thanks Sukhish !
I've been playing guitar for a long time but I've learned a lot by watching your videos. Great patient teacher.
thanks John ! www.song-bike.com for more !
You are a great instructor, My main problem has been changing chords and taking my hand off the fret board, I am now focusing on the movement and practice, practice and practice, thanks...will be tuning in more on your lessons
Such great tips in this video. Keeping my elbow free and letting my thumb move around have drastically improved my chord changes. Thank you so much!

I recommended you to a lot of players you are a very good instructor, probably the best.
This was very helpful man, it took a day for me. Good luck to you mate.
I have been working on you are my sunshine as i was told it was a good basic song to start on but was having trouble with the g to c transition. This video is already helping and i have watched it once. My main problem was playing the g chord without my pinky on the e. Thank you for the video and I will definitely be checking out your others.
so glad I found this, you make me feel like maybe I can learn to play guitar.Great teaching style. Thanks
At a point when I got frustrated, this video gave me hope! Double thumbs up!!
Thanks for the video, great pointers on changing cords. Picked up the guitar after a failed attempt 40 years ago.
Thank you for this awesome video.... Love people who are sharing their knowledge with the world!!! keep up the good work
This is so great! It's a great pace for learning, and I really appreciate your thorough instruction on changing chords. Thank you so much!
Lisa Shaffer Thanks Lisa !
This video is awesome! Your experience with teaching really shines through. Very easy to follow and understand and not dry at all. This video is perfect for exactly where i am in my journey of learning the guitar. I had an electric for a few years and basically only got as far as learning most of the open chords, some power chords (Black sabbath type stuff: Sweet Leaf, Iron Man etc), a pentatonic scale and diatonic scales (of which I only remember 1 diatonic). I recently sold the electric which I hardly ever touched anymore and picked up an acoustic which I was itching for. Since then my practicing has gone way up again but i was hitting a wall. I was trying to learn by learning snippits of songs but that seemed to be slow learning and kind of hard just looking at tabs. I'd practice trying to learn the song for about 10min then get frustrated because it seemed harder than it should be, so i'd want to practice some other aspect of the guitar but i didn't really know how or what I should try to practice/learn next. After watching this video i'm seeing things much more clearly. No wonder learning the songs was slow going, although I knew some of the chords my chord changing wasn't developped at all. I was totally removing my fingers in between chord changes (worst case scenerio), and I hadn't been practicing that repetition to commit the chords/changes to memory. Gotta take things back to basics! You totally just knocked down that wall I ran into and provided me with many hours practicing potential! Thank you for that! Great video, great teacher. I've watched many of your other videos as well and made tons of notes and now have months of guided practice ahead of me instead of staring at a brick wall! I also bookmarked the new website coming soon, subscribed to this channel, followed on Facebook and instagram. (Also told some of my friends about jkehew1 here on you tube) Thanks!!
Mathew Giroux Thanks Mathew !!! I really appreciate the encouragement. Stay tuned !
WOW! Great instruction on chords for beginners. AND you teach things here that NO ONE I've ever seen teach before. Like the left hand thumb techniques etc. Really good teaching here Johnathan. MORE - PLEASE . . . .
Hi PIC, thanks for your kind words! I'm posting a new video tonight. Check it out and keep rockin'...
thank you so much for the assistance with practice in changing chords. That is definitely that hardest thing to master. The exercises that you showed help me almost immediately. It's thanks to folk like you that I am again (after 50 years) getting back to guitar and enjoying it.I guess what they say is right practice practice practice.
Thank you again.
I'd like to add my tuppence... A good example of a solid and honest guy that is using social media to do something positive. Helping others. Excellent on all counts in my opinion and I appreciate the assistance given.
Matt Holland Thanks Matt ! Stay tuned for my new website. I'm filming new videos right now. www.song-bike.com. It's almost ready ! Please like my facebook page : facebook.com/mysongbike
Thanks Jonathan! I'm a beginner and you got me over a major hurdle in chord changes with just a few subtle changes to how I was playing the chords!

Thank you very much, Jonathon Kehew for this video.
This video helps me to play guitar more easily and I learned many things.
Thanks soooo much for this. I had a 3/4 acoustic guitar as a child but I never bothered with lessons or videos in the past, I used an old book. Soon got bored. Recently bought a Crafter guitar on Amazon UK (it was a steal, crazy cheap for such quality) with the intention of getting some proper lessons. But wow this vid is a revelation. You made things clear and understandable.
My main problem is toughening up my very soft tiny finger tips (oh man they get sore) and using my pinky, but I'm slowly getting there! I'm trying to practice for at least 20mins every day. Your vids are gonna be a huge help!
You're welcome, Cara ! You've identified two of the main challeneges everyone faces: soft fingertips and the pinky finger. Hang in there - it gets easier, especially if you're playing every day ! Thanks so much Jonathan, you made my guitar life so interesting & fun. It's now addictive! Thanks to you, so many wonderful people around this Earth are having a great time playing their guitar all because of this beautiful man called Jonathan keyhoe. Lyn & I love ya matie!
Thanks Tony ! I'll get Down Under someday !
Another GREAT video for chord change drills I really loved the idea of timing yourself you are so on to the muscle memory thing and yes in the long haul it will make a massive change!
Hi Advan, thanks for your feedback. Keep thinking about your progress over the long run and enjoy even the smallest signs of progress - those are the most common!
Great video. I've been playing C,G and D chords in progression, one strum each, over and over and over and over and over again, whilst watching episodes of the US Office (20 mins per episode) to keep my mind slightly occupied!
I've nailed G and D, still getting used to C!
Now THAT sounds like a good practice plan! Please 'like' and subscribe and check out my newest videos at www.song-bike.com. Other videos are at ruclips.net/user/jkehew1. And you can receive news, updates, giveaways and cools posts if you 'like' my facebook page: facebook.com/mysongbike.
i just found it very useful after you posted it 7years ago, god bless you!!
You're one of the best guitar instructors I ever saw. Your clarity to the point is not only phenomenon but very lucid to see and comprehend. My question therefore is, "Do you have a DVD for purchase or download?" I say this in all honesty, I can't seem to get enough of all your DVD's I have came across. Thanks Jon. You are a true professional.
primeminister51 Wow, thanks !! I'm happy to sell any of the RUclips lessons as a DVD, but at the moment I don't have anything to sell that's not already available for free on RUclips. I have a big project in the works though. Stay tuned !!!
Thank you so much for your video. Any tips I can get are extremely appreciated.

He is very classic I almost thought the video was from the 70's era. His voice is crystal clear. His way of teaching is very light and straight to the point. I listen to him very carefully and take notes. His videos are perfect for beginners or those who got lost somewhere in the middle like myself :P

Thank you for the finger control tip. Changing to B minor is really hard from D or A and not lifting fingers off really helps. At 78, I'm a combat vet transitioning from staccato noise to melodic sounds. . LOL!
Great video! And you are a great instructor! Thanks a lot for patiently explaining so many basic concepts. I am struggling with changing chords. Have been learning for 6 months. I suppose I am not practicing enough. Will try to follow as suggested. Thanks

thank you i found that really helpful. you give so many nice little tips that helped me a lot :)
Hey! You are the GREATEST! Thank you so much for taking the time to post these videos! I started taking lessons about two years ago ... no, make that five! Wow...time does fly! Anyway, during that time, I was at the grocery store and slipped on a shopping list that somebody had dropped and before I knew it I was on my hands and knees facing the opposite direction! At one point during that nice little flip I heard my neck pop! Well, the gist of this tale is that now I have some serious spinal damage that is taking a toll on my hands ~ and whatever it is, the numerous doctors have not quite figured it out. So, for the past year and a half I couldn't even handle touching water! The good new? I've found a new doctor...yeah me! and....even better ....YEAH YOU~~~I picked up my guitar yesterday for the first time since Nov. 2014 ~~~ found your videos on RUclips and played around for about six minutes then had to give in due to the pain! So, not only will I donate I'll also KNIT YOU A BRIGHT BLUE CAPE cause my friend, YOU ARE MY HERO!!!! so...now for some bad news? I do not knit...I do make jewelry...alas, no knitting. You are safe. No BRIGHT BLUE CAPE in your future friend. ... ;0)Peaceout!TeriUrban Muse, LLC

I have often had this experience that music teachers are unfortunately grumpy and dry. You definitely changed that image for me. That smile and way of talking rally affect the learning process.
Keep up the good work.

Great Video! I like your style. This helped so much!! Thank You!
You're great! I no longer rest my elbow or forearm on my lap and the chord changes became easier! Thumb placement made a difference too, thanks!!
Hi Tresidential, thanks for watching this one too! I love knowing that I'm helping....
Thank you for the video. The tips are really helpful! Looking forward to more videos.
陶然 Thank you !!!
I'm self taught and have been playing guitar longer than this man has been alive. :D Which means I've picked up LOTS of bad habits like playing a G as: 2-1-O-O-O-3 instead of 3-2-O-O-O-4. The former, means that making the change from C to G requires a fairly big shift in finger positions. The latter, which Jonathan shows here, is ultimately the best way since it requires the least amount of finger-switching. This "minimal finger movement" philosophy is one I've seen taught by many, many guitar teachers. Someday I'll get that through my little flea brain. Thanks for posting this video.
I like how you think, Bob!

Gautam Jain Thanks Guatam !
Thanks,
Doing the 2 min now. Need to say it give me a smile on my face to do the G difrent like you do it. Only problem what is still have is that need learn my self to go back from G to C. But thanks a lot.
Investing in yourself..... nice way to put it. Great lesson. Thank you! And 116 people thumbs down this? The title has “Beginner” in it. Again, appreciate you adding context and thought process to support “why” your approaching the chord process this way.

its awesome , actually i was looking long time for this kind of video, thank you very much
krishanth c Thanks Krishanth !
Your lessons are very helpfull. When I first heard about using the little finger for making the G chord I was thinking how I will make fast the C chord that was a issue with the normal way I learned at first.Anyway I tried to make it as you said and today I watched at this video also and I was enlightened by you.Its logical all that you are saying and I made some progress.I will keep that minute of pain or better said minutes of pain as also daily exercises. The hardest for me seems so far from the A major Chord to D major. It went better after some tries, hope to be resolved with practice. Also the elbow tip and being aware of the thumb helps a lot as you can have more grip from what I ve seen during a chord plus less or no pain.Thank you for all the help
I really enjoyed this video, has made practicing a more interesting, very encouraging. Subscribed.
Thanks Bob!

Thanks,will look at that..
On vacation and stuck in Saudi Arabia.
Unable to go home due to corona virus.
Bought a guitar a while back.
Took it out today.
I started practicing your chords.
Was amazing.
I also enjoyed the finger picking.
Always wondered how musicians achieved that.
Will continue practicing
I'm better player thanks to you. Thank you so much for this vid helped me a lot I had no problems with my pinkie from the C to G transition. I was surprised that was easy as it was
I've been playing a guitar for almost a week now and it's the hardest thing that I've experience since I was born. My fingers has its own life. But I'm doing this cuz I want too. Good luck to me. And I love the way you teach. Thank you!!

Jonathan, the video is from 2013 but it looks like you are still paying attention and responding. I found the instruction very good. For a 28 minute instructional video, you stay on poin and don't ramble and wander aimlessly. I am new to guitar, about 9 months in. I practice a lot, especially chord and chord changes. Sometimes I think I've got it figured out, then sometimes it slips away! I had some instruction but because of the quarantine and staying in, I am just running through a lot of self practice. Here is the issue I am having. You eluded to it at about the 16:00 mark of this video. It has to do with thumb placement and trying to avoid contact with other strings. The suggestion is to move the thumb to the middle of the neck and let the hand curl around the bottom of the neck. This accomplishes space between hand and bottom of the neck thus preventing the bottom of the hand from contacting the bottom string. All fine and well. But in doing this, the left hand is not really supporting or holding the neck - the neck is free floating. So here's what happens, even when I try to practice chord changes slowly: I'm playing the chord, the guitar is basically being supported by thumb and fingers that are playing the chord: I'm holding the guitar neck between thumb and fingers. Well, when I change chords, the neck sometimes moves just because the right arm is strumming. When I release the chord, the neck moves and in order to get it into position, I grab the neck from the bottom with my left hand muting the bottom string and wasting a lot of movement. What happens often is I'll ever so gently pull the neck towards me to play the chord then when I release, the neck pops away, outward and there's no way to pull it back in easily. I'm sure that the mechanics I've just describe should not be happening when I use this 'invisible' thumb method. The concept of minimizing finger motion when changing chords makes perfect sense. But even when I work on reducing finger motion, as long as I'm not supporting the guitar from the bottom, when I release a chord to change to the next, the neck floats and can move and I end up touching strings while I chase the neck. What am I doing wrong here? So a follow up video and/or explanation what's wrong here and how to fix it would be great. In other words - how to change chords using the invisible thumb method would be great! Thank you.
I don't know if this will help, David, but I hold the guitar tightly against my ribs with my strumming arm whenever I need to stabilize it.

Thank you jkehew, you are a natural teacher, a maestro....
Hey Jonathan, great video. I just picked up the guitar a few weeks ago, and I think this is a great way to practice. I do this for a few minutes in the morning before I leave for work and it is great practice for a beginner and I find it really helpful.
I think you did a great job here.
s-viv Thanks s-viv ! You're wise to carve out a little time to play...if you do that every day you'll notice results before long !
