6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for RUclips. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free RUclips Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on RUclips.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
This episode teaches how to move open-position chords up the neck to create new "voicings" of chords. Guitar players do this to create new tones and options when playing with a second guitar player who IS playing the open-position chords. Also, these up-the-neck chords are useful in band situations where open-position chords can be too boomy or jangly to fit the song.
Best guitar half hour ever in three years. Thank you. Just learning 84 year old. U K
me too just learning 72age from Malaysia
Just relearning at 60 after 42 years of an initial failed attempt. Never too late to learn.
That's amazing
Jim O'Toole how is it coming along?
Started both bass and "regular" guitar at 40. In 2020. Coming along nicely here.
God bless you. One of the best things you can do.
This is what should be taught to a beginner the day they form their first chord. It illustrates what the fret board (WWHWWWH )chord recipe MEANS on the fret board and gives us newbies a a tool for playing along with other musicians...SOLID GOLD Jonathan. Thank you.
If ever someone was Born To Teach -- it's this man.

@@thecastle09 You're just mad.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! Yayyyyy no one has ever taught me much on utube! You have!!!!!
10 years of playing 5 open chords ..you just opened my world. Thankyou
Three years ago I had brain 🧠 surgery and was incapacitated for awhile. I found a old guitar 🎸 in the alley. I had never played before. . I took it to a music store and had it restrung. I went on you tube and find JOHNATHAN KEHEW. You my teacher have greatly influenced me . Very VERY slowly thru much repetition i’am beginning to comprehend. Thank you 🙏 more then you can understand what a special, patience teacher YOU are. PLEASE continue!!!!!!
Jonathan Kehew the Bob Ross of guitar. You sir have helped me progress on guitar far more then any of these other guys on RUclips. (As awesome as they are.)
High praise, Maxwell! Don't forget to subscribe to my channel. And I have LOTS of videos at www.song-bike.com available to subscribers. Please check it out !!
Thank you Mr. Kehew a few years ago a good friend of mine gave me a guitar and told me to learn how to play it. That I’m doing so it would help me through my journey battling a couple cancers that suddenly became an issue. Your lessons were part of my medicine. After 4 years now I’m cancer free. I also have learned enough guitar to go back through my lessons. This one was a big boost, once I learned the regular chords . Thank you sir.
You're very welcome David! Join me this Saturday May 13, 2023 5pm ET for a free RUclips livestream Q+A all about learning, playing, practicing, and caring for guitars. You can text me your questions LIVE ! This Sat. 5pm ET on my RUclips channel ruclips.net/user/jkehew1. See you there !
I am a 63 year old beginner who has mastered a few chords. I can be a bit slow on the uptake sometimes but Johnathan is a great teacher. Really impressive. Thank you.
Also a 63 year old beginner. No one makes me feel as optimistic about my guitar playing future as Jonathan!
@@MrBritishGent I am a 69 year old beginner and I agree how patient and thorough Johnathan is. Great Teacher. Good Wishes!!
Jonathan is sooooo underrated. He is absolutely amazing. He can spot on relate to my playing abilities & challenges. He’s so patient & progresses at a perfect pace.
I'm a 63 yr old beginner also. As of Jan 1 2023!
@@guyshaffer6156 Well, Guy. I still consider myself a beginner with 4 years of “playing” under my belt. And I’ve been around the sun a couple more times than you. But Jonathan doesn’t get the accolades he deserves, like other instructors do, such as Marty & Justin. His teaching style is perfect for me.
I just started trying guitar at 60. You have taught me my first 5 chords. And the more I watch your videos? I hope to learn more.
Welcome to the world of guitar! Please check out my website www.song-bike.com to see my other learning materials like books, e-books, PDFs and of course more videos!
Favorite corner on RUclips. That's Johnathan Kehew, Guitarist extraordinaire. Man, would he be a great psychologist as well Zen Master.
This dude's voice is so perfect for instructing.
I am 6 months into playing the guitar and you have practically taught me how to play. My fingers are so sore but I can't put it down. When you see progress happening right before your eyes it is hard to stop. Thanks for all you do.

Stared playing over two years ago and you have got to be the best guitar teacher in the world . I’m 60 years old and you have been a great motivation to me because I have been searching for a way up the neck and you teach a clear path .
I have just found this site. At 72 I am about to start playing guitars I have had for years. This lesson tells me that I have a good chance of learning a lot more than going for weekly lessons with a tutor. I will be looking into all these lessons on a daily basis from now. I have 36 lyrics written over the last few years and I can now start fitting tunes from my head to the words. Thanks a million from an old man in England.

Basic principles of good teaching, going from the familiar well known stuff to the new ,not so familiar, stuff, which is cool sounding but not too difficult.
From one great teacher to another.
I really appreciate that Gerard - do you teach guitar too? Please check out my website www.song-bike.com for lots of other learning material!
You have the gift of teaching and I thank you for sharing your talent with us guitar enthusiasts (a.k.a guitar nuts). I've been at it for about 50 years now and I really enjoy your posts. Besides confirming a lot of techniques I've already used you always show me new stuff. Awesome! Johnathan, I just found your videos today and have to say I'm digging your approach! At age 54 I'm recovering from carpel tunnel surgery in my left hand and facing the same in my right. This video and the classic blues riff video are the only ones I've watched so far but what therapy not only for my left hand but the soul. When my left hand starts cramping I'm going back to the blues riff video to give it a bit of a rest. Thank you for posting these videos and reminding my that I'm not working my guitar, I'm PLAYING it!!
Kenny Coinneach Hey Kenny, good luck with your recovery. If I'm playing a small part, that makes my day!

ALWAYS a sheer pleasure to another video you've done. Am 74 and have played many years, love your teaching style. Not everyone can teach - lots of players "know how" , but can't explain it to a new player. Wish I was as polished as you in teaching style.Keep playing my friend. Best wishes in all you do.
LIFE changing- the lightbulb just went off in my brain. Fantastic way to explain it
I happily find myself back to this particular tutorial. Playing up the neck has always been challenging, don’t know why, but Jonathan makes it easy and for me at least, his tutorials just rise above all the others with his simplicity. Someone already said it “ if someone was born to teach it’s this man”. Thanks Jonathan, you continue to both inspire and aspire!

Good morning Jonathan. Just finished watching your lesson on Up-The-Neck chords. I have been wanting to learn how to do this for years. Other instructors make is so confusing. Your method of teaching makes it simple and easy to understand. Thank you. Now I am going to sit and practice. This is really great fun!
Just wanted to say thank you for posting your videos. I am learning at age 60 plus and it is a bit of struggle on finger flexibility but I am improving with practice. Your teaching style is superb, you are very clear and show exactly how to do things and offer lots of little tips that make all the difference. You have been a lot of help to me and I think you are one of the best teachers that I have come across on the web. Thanks, Ady from Cornwall in the UK.
YOUR THE BEST, I LOVE THE WAY YOU BREAK EVERYTHING DOWN WHEN TEACHING SO TALK ON AND PLAY ON. GOD BLESS YOU!!
Great lesson... Thank you.
Thanks very much for this lesson, informative and very clear and fun to listen and try
Jonathan, you are the BEST teacher I’ve found! Thank you so much!
Hello....Hope you're doing good and staying safe?sensational
I have a whole new out look on the guitar I was so ready to quit but finding you and these lessons has changed this ole mans mind !!!! Thanks you are an awesome teacher !! Thanks again !!!
I finally got enough basics under the belt for this not to fry my brain. LOL Weeeee! What an eye opener. Thank you so much! It finally makes sense...finally means something. It means I'll be able to go up and down the fretboard and not be locked into just the first 5 frets. 🎈🎉❤️😁
You got it, Melody!!

Holy cow!! I have been looking for you all my life!! My guitar "career" started when I was just a wee thing and my uncle taught me an open G chord. Showed me a little country/western strumming pattern, and I have been attempting to learn to play ever since. I can't learn all the other ways for whatever reason - you just made this a billion times easier!! I hear so much creative music in my head, but while I can pick it out on the piano (though I play classical) it is always something that will sound better on the guitar. I left the lessons on the guitar alone, because the piano lessons "killed" that creative streak. Your method is FANTASTIC for someone like me! You show where to go without losing the shape and THAT keeps the door open for creativity! Thank you SO VERY MUCH!! *subscribed for life!!* (Or at least as long as RUclips's life lol)

finally a teacher has addressed the question that's been on my mind after learning the open chords (what happens when you move the shape up and down the fretboard) thanks i really really appreciate it.
Wonderful tutorial. Wonderful teacher. I like the way Jonathan doesn't automatically assume that we already know something. I've watch a lot of guitar tutorials where the guitarist is more concerned about showing off his skills) knowledge than teaching. There's a humility clarity, honestly and unpretentiousness to Jonathan that's condusive to the whole learning process. Thanks man. 👍

BRAVO !!! BRAVO Mr. Kehew ! Finally after a dozen guitar teachers, I found your method the most digestible in getting started with chords. I already can four finger alternate pick because I have been a finger drummer my whole adult life, so this video has given me a real good primer for working the confusing fretboard. I’m a newbie to the guitar although I’ve been playing piano for a while and understand theory. But barre chords have been elusive and this up-the-neck method is brilliant to let me play any chord I want to while still learning barre chords gradually. Looking forward to many more of your videos.

Your lessons encourage, inform & are clear & I like how you accent topics & points w/observations of, & anecdotes on real-life musicians. Your enthusiasm & words build confidence, & thanks so much for conveying such relatable & conscientious comments in a genuinely friendly way, & for the great asides & tips.
There's a great spirit behind these teaching videos! A well-covered Gerry Goffin & Carole King tune says, " . . . and something happens to me that's 'some kind of wonderful' . . . ;" & it seems this describes how so many of us students feel from your teaching, so let me borrow the title and say YOU are "Some Kind of Wonderful!" Thank you!!!

I don't class myself as a beginner, but self teaching and improving via youtube (until lockdown is lifted and I can afford a local teacher) I do move chords around a bit because they sound good, but I had no idea how to find out what these chords are. The example using D major moving it up to become G then A, is a real light bulb moment!! Many thanks☺
I was wondering if we move the d “shape” up to the first fret if that’s a C chord? But I’m with you, old vid but this guy is really good, I’ve watched 3 of his vids so far, the on the blues is pretty cool. At 62 I’m just starting to learn, it’s my retirement plan, and you tube sure helps a whole lot🎸🎸🎸
I've learned more from following you than any other method I've tried. Thank you Jonathan, keep up the excellent work!

I LOVE THIS GUY. These are the most useful lessons - it's hard to find stuff at this level. I know my chords, I know some scales, I need help with the difference between where I'm at and a "normal" pop use of a guitar.

Thank you Sir, of all the online videos,I learn the most from your videos. Most of my progression of learning guitar is all your fault in a good way. Again thanks for teaching the way you do. I have learned so much, my wife is even impressed. But litterly being a basement guitar player with no one to play with I have come along way.
I appreciate that, Joseph - that means a lot to me ! Don't forget to subscribe - I'm hoping to reach 100k subscribers ! And check out my website: www.song-bike.com
Thanks Jonathan. That was really helpful. Applied some music theory in an understandable way and showed how to move up the fretboard at the same time. Great!
Hi TMD! You are invited to join me this Saturday May 13, 2023 5pm ET for a free RUclips livestream Q+A all about learning, playing, practicing, and caring for guitars. You can text me your questions LIVE ! This Sat. 5pm ET on my RUclips channel ruclips.net/user/jkehew1. See you there !
This lesson was utter perfection! Thank you so much for providing me with a warm, inviting , and encouraging way of learning to play guitar. I don't have enough to afford lessons, and I've been trying to teach myself for over a year, but your lessons have taught me so much already. I subscribed to you and truly hope you make more videos because you are an excellent teacher! Thank you!
Jonathan, just watched your Beginner Up-the-Neck Chords episode. Fasinating sound through the use of the E major grip to play A and B, especially leaving the #1 & #2 strings open. I experimented using the pinky to depress the #2 string at 7 for A and 9 for B. The variation (open/depressed) on this string provides another unique sound. Good work on your instruction.
Fantastic video! I have been playing over 10 years but never really got into the mechanics, for lack of a better term, of music. The how and why chords are what they are. Loved the lesson!

Jonathan, I've picked the guitar up to spend some quality times with my 3 sons who play guitars and drums....your videos and teaching style have made the daunting task of learning the guitar much easier....I thank you for enabling me to make some great sounds with my sons at the now "Play to eat" BBQ get togethers that have become a neighborhood favorite! Keep up the great work....much appreciated! - Mike
Mike Boudreau Hi Mike ! You get The Comment Of The Week Award ! That's what music is all about. Before the Rock Star was invented, MOST music was neighborhood music, if you know what I mean. jkehew1 Done! Keep up the great work Jonathan! Your inspiring to many to explore and grow their creative side!
Mike Boudreau P.S. ....I'm in desperate need to learn how to pick at a beginner level....any exercises or videos would be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy all of your lessons! Very good lesson to broaden ones use of full neck of guitar. I love the oldies and intros. The more I learn harder things, the more easy basic things will be.
I appreciate that, NGS !

Jonathan, I only discovered you recently, and I'm most glad that I did. Your ability to simplify and not make what seems to be daunting or overwhelming less so is truly wonderful. Thank you for putting yourself out there. In a perfect world I would hire you as a private teacher, but I've not the luxury to do so. Thanks again!
Everything I need/want to know about playing the guitar lies with you. Thanks.

Great. Very easy to understand and helpful. I’m learning upside down(left-handed) but it all works great.
