So you're saying this wasn't Vinnie Zummo? I see the same drummer from Vinnie's concerts and I believe that is Graham on bass, but you're right, the guitar player not only elevates the guitar parts but carries the song because Joe is using such a stripped down version of his band/players. Guitar has to carry the tune, and he does.
This must be one of the few instances in music where the live version is ACTUALLY better than the studio version. The strength and the sheer push this performance has is nuts. First time I heard this cut in the radio I could not fucking believe it. 10 points.
Frankly, this version is just vastly different than other live versions....not necessarily better. It features the guitar out front and Joe's synth lead.....but my counterpoint would be ….where is the brass, acoustic piano, bass in the physical sense or in the mix? Not there. Joe and his players are outstanding musicians but each tour was different, featuring different arrangements, and they will appeal to different folks for different reasons.
@@Lunatic4Bizcas You might look around on YT and try to locate another live performance of track at this same time with his mainstream players at the time. It was incredible and featured the brass, the great Vinnie guitar work and his impeccable bass player as well, and Joe's signature vocal delivery and horn work.
@@johnmaer : Indeed. I'm quite familiar with that performance as I've seen it time and again. Truly impeccable . That video truly highlights Jackson and his complete band at the top of their game.
I remember I heard this version about 20 years ago on the radio and loved it, despite not knowing who did it or what song it was. I spent the next 10 years trying to google and figure it out until one day I'm in IHOP with my (now) wife and we hear the studio version on the music in the restaurant. I finally put 2 and 2 together and figure out it was the live version that I had heard. She laughed and said "You really didn't know who that is? Thats Joe Jackson!" I felt like a fool but was extremely happy to finally find the song I had been looking so desperately for. Thanks Joe!!
But the killer thing about Joe is that he can arrange and perform about a million different versions of his hit recordings.....they are all original, unique tone, assorted players, and they all sound great.
What a great song, what a great talent, what a great environment, what a fascination to be able to play in Tokyo, with an audience that appreciates good music, what a great jacket, in the best hotel, to feel that they appreciate good art, a tour in Japan is a trip to paradise , i love you !!!!!!! so so so cool !!!!!!!!
Tom Teeley's touch on guitar here is exquisite. The vibrato chords, the arpeggiated chords, the riffs...all wondrous and influential on my own playing.
When I bought the CD with this song on, I thought it was a ten piece band, but there's only 3 of them! Awsome full sound from drums, bass and guitar. Great musicians
theres a shot of the audience at just over 4 minutes and Im hoping that their complete dead pan silence is because there are so in shock from the incredible music in front of them.. I wouldn't be able to sit still!! I'd be up and dancing all by myself 😄
So true. Married last Week . She was there my Whole life. Since Kindergarten ,my Neighbor . Jill Lauesen I Love a you more than life at self. Thanks for Being My Woman . My Princess Forever . Joe you Rock big time .

Joe Jackson is such an incredible Musician, singer, song writer, arranger that in my eyes he can do NO wrong. And while I admire the many directions that he can take his songs during a live show (BUT,) I really prefer the version with the brass section right up front. It gives the song a much more Jazz tone to it. Plus IMO a ggod strong horn section can raise the band's level of performance by a factor of TEN. Easily!
Thank you of roosting one of my fav live Joe Jackson songs. Shazam! It's one of those unusual cases where the live version is better than the studio take. Always suspected on the audio that the guitarist had broken a string but looks like the hand held keyboard was an intentional solo? Love it when the guitar comes back into solo with Joe together they drive that message home!
The guy in the foreground playing that awesome blue guitar is actually Vinnie Zummo not Tom Teeley. Tom is supposed to play on this recording also but we never see him for some reason (he gets a credit on the official live album for the Tokyo '86 tracks).
Finally. I had the live album with this very version on years ago. It introduced me to this tune, and while the big brass version is good, this one with Tom Teeley's ripsnorting guitar on is the one that for me is the best. I've looked for this before on YT and only now have I found it. Thanks
great video, thanks for posting......reminds me of when i drove from L.A. to Atlanta in 40 hours to see the love of my life after 5 years apart......God i still love her
Joe Jackson in a dirty old man Mac… feels pretty much on-brand. All kidding aside, fucking killer intro (coming out of the gate in top gear just like “Don’t Take Me Alive”)… and a SUPERLATIVE bass solo from Rick Ford.
An excellent live version of this iconic JJ tune…the version here (ruclips.net/video/Bo759np9-nM/видео.htmlsi=8ddweZBZxFRYb4MR ) WITH horns is definitive. Sooooooo good…every note! Cheers gents and thank you! 🙏🏻
This vid should have 10 Million views...!!!.. They didn't leave it all on the "flo"

This is one of the few reasons why life´s wonderful.
Very well said!
Agreed
Amen!!!!!
Saw the gig in Perth (WA) on the big world tour.Still puts a tear in the eye from the memory, just so so good
@@KevinIon-p3h I saw him live too. He played at the Perth Concert Hall late nineties ish. Great concert.
it amazin how , without the horns and keyboard accompaniment , they didnt just "pull it off" - they knocked it out of the park
Tom Teeley's guitar playing makes the hairs on my arms stand. Breathtaking.
So you're saying this wasn't Vinnie Zummo? Wow, guitar player rocks...
The drummer played it perfect.
Bass guitar also wonderful
So many great musicians.

Agreed. The guitar work is AMAZING

@@humbertholloway7701 : Yes. I prefer the complete album version; however, this performance was so tight and nothing short of phenomenal.

Oh, when he started with that keyboard, that was magical.... Brilliant !!

What a great song and what a great message. Bravo!

Tom Teeley is just brilliant on guitar. What a song.
The Drummer was tearin it up!
This is the best song ever
ONE of Top songs ever 👌
This simple version is also wonderful!!!
Joe's Japan performances were some of the best...
Sadly, this video was only ever put out on VHS and never reissued. I want this on DVD/Blue Ray!
Just awesome!!!
that has to be the sickest keytar ever!
I can watch this version over and over and just sit here in amazement. Truly gifted musicians.
Ooooo que buen temazo de los 80 !!
This is real talent ,boys and girls!!!

完璧・・・
This was the jam.
The guitar man plays great on this song, great stuff
This performance covers all the bases and also kicks ass.
This sounds incredible on my phone, stunning production (audio engineering)
The band was tight that night!!1🥂🎵✌️
Saw Joe a couple of years ago. This song is still one of the highlights of the live show, a guitar solo replacing Joe's key-tar part.
Had all his albums in college, especially loved this one. Love to see a guy who is comfortable playing different musicical styles.
UNA VERDADERA OBRA DE ARTE
Great guitar player.
I love the DVD of this concert.

Unique Genious, your legacy will Never die, bless Mr Joe Jackson the Boss
excellent performance!! I never get tired of watching it :D
Joe Jackson definitely knows his s*** in music!!!😁
I prefer the version with the horns. Thf horns are this song’s trademark
Sounds 👍💯

Great playing and if memory serves (if it so chooses) the later Blaze of Glory tour featured BOTH Tom Teely (sp?) and Vinnie Zummo.
Great song!

He addresses him as Tom Teeley on the full video though when he introduces the band.
La mejor versión!!! Un crack Joe
Listening and loving his music since Body and Soul came out over 30 years ago.
Rick Ford shows probably one of the first Fodera basses ever built.
Wow!! Damn.
The same performance recorded onto his Joe Jackson Live set that I have at first, on cassette, and now on CD.

Not the same without the Horns
:-(
For sure .... DIfférent, but excellent !
Interesting without the horns of the original arrangement.
This song played by a three-piece - genius.
Theres no horns...
🤨
with the horns better.
this guy is good but Vinnie plays the shit out of this tune
