Can’t quite believe that’s 40 years Davy. I remember watching that as a kid and had completely forgotten about it until your video popped up! I remember little 6 year old me being very impressed with it. Thanks for that. 🙂
Me and my sis watched this so often back in the day on VHS, got it on dvd already and have watched it every December for many years it's a staple of the Christmas run up. Think the upgrade to bluray is worth it for the documentary alone. Good review pal 👍
Excellent stuff Davy, this was a firm favourite in my youth, I always found the Rat man disturbing when he said something like "Got any green cheese for me ?" I'll have to buy it now.
I remember this being HEAVILY pushed at the time by Blue Peter, who had cast members on for interviews, and props and costumes from the show on display. Never watched it. I was a big fan and avid watcher of 'The Children of Green Knowe', though.
The box of delights was def part of my childhood (I was 5 in 1984) Ive recently brought the Blu Ray and Ive watched the bonus features and episodes 1-5 but Im saving episode 6 for Christmas Eve as that episode was shown on Christmas Eve 84 (as mentioned in the bonus features I think) when Ive watced the episodes Ive kept the picture aspect the size it would of been back in the day just to keep the vintage feel.
Sadly, I was already an adult when this came out; as a consequence, perhaps, I struggled to get into it. I like Patrick Troughton, so I was glad to see him. However... without introducing a spoiler, I found the ending more than a bit clichéd. (Also, everyone seemed to accept all the magical elements without the slightest element of surprise, which I found, well... surprising!) Having said all that, I can easily see how a young child would be drawn into this on first viewing - and would probably carry that sense of wonder forward while watching it again as an adult.
I think the ending could be a bit fleshed out. But it's nothing compared to the other book that's never been made into a show. Poor Kay Harker...Abner was the least of his worries.
That wonderful intro and theme...

Yes, it really is oddly disturbing. A lot of 70s-90s "kids" TV in the UK was. A lost art, I fear.
Had the original dvd for years...its totally wonderful...all the best.
And to you!
Excellent review
Thank you kindly!

There'll be a review of Green Knowe in the new year for sure along with Moondial and others!
40 years shows my age remember watching this on TV long long time ago
