My dad purchased a 2003 CRV brand new when I was 10 years old. He passed away in 2008 and paid it off before he left this earth. My mom drove it but encountered issues along the way that were to expensive for us to repair so eventually we just let it sit around not being driven. Fast track to today, I pulled the engine out of it and did a full rebuild on it, it drives so smooth like a new car! I absolutely LOVE this car, 147k miles on the dash fully revived, and so blessed that my 19 month old son can enjoy it with me! I dedicated so much time and money into it I actually call it the most espensive 2nd gen on earth 😂 the sentimental value still tops that price❤ the plan is that it is going to stay in the family forever!
I have a 2004 CRV-EX. Only has 174,000 miles on it and runs like new! I had to replace the a/c compressor and it needs shocks, but that's about it. Great car
As a tall guy, I prefer a swing out tailgate. One less thing to hit my head on. Also, you don’t have to swing it all the way out. You could swing it a foot or so, and get smaller items in/out pretty easily.
My wife bought a Honda crv 2nd gen, in 2007, it was unsold, because the new model was already in the dealership, she had a nice price reduction. 2L petrol model, automatic gearbox, manual air conditioning, and no other extras, only the stainless steel rocker strips. Today, the car has 200,000 kms, it works wonderfully and we are very happy, we will keep it as long as possible.
You aren’t quite correct regarding the mid Gen refresh. It was actually quite substantial in terms of mechanical upgrades. The 4 speed AT was upgraded to a 5 speed. VSA (traction control) was added, plus larger brakes, and ball joints. They also had a reinforced b pillar as well was side and curtain airbags. The AWD system was also upgraded.
My friend's father last month sold me their 06 CR-V for a whopping $10 because the starter went bad. Otherwise its immaculate inside, has a bit of hazy headlamps but that can be easily cleaned, and the rear cargo-door lock is broken. But it only has 95,000 miles on the odo. Barely broken in, lol.
I loved my 2002. LX. Ran it for 22 years, 145,000 miles. However my AC died on my 4 times. Yep had to replace it 3 times, but I bought a 2025. I sold my 2002 and the new buyer had to replace the AC. Things were just wearing out. It needed new brakes, and tie rods. I had it die at a gas station bay. Had it towed for repair found out needed a new starter. I still love that car. Sometimes I wish I still had it. Great car.
My dad had the 1st gen CR-V, DX manual, I loved that thing. That also had the folding table in the back. As far as we know it’s still driving around the Big Island of Hawaii to this day.
I just bought a 2005 CRV EX trim for $500 with 169,648 & still runs really good. Needs a tune up & shocks that’s it. Ac works really good & dries & response well for an automatic.😁
It was $500 plus it needed tires, brakes, oil changes, shocks, front end suspension & she runs great now. She has now 171,000 on the clock still running strong. Insurance is $360 every six months. I can’t complain I’m happy. Thank you all for wishing me well with it.😇
I own a 2005 CRV manual transmission, bought it used a year ago with 230K miles off of FB Marketplace for $3200; red paint with brown interior. It now has approx 257K miles on. I've done a handful of minor maintenance work which is to be expected for the year: new brakes, rotors, tires, power steering pump that failed, catalytic converter, o2 sensor, front axel, replaced all the engine fluids, rear sway bar links, bushings, master clutch cylinder - now that I type all of that out, yes I've done some work to it. But, know what? I freaking love this car, so much fun to drive and very practical. If I could find another manual transmission 2nd gen out there with under 200K miles on it, I buy another one.
I have a GR86 as my sports car and I have a 2005 CR-V AWD as my daily beater. It’s the best car I’ve owned. I love how small it is and how many quirks and features it has (table, counter console, handbrake, bed seats, compartments up the wazoo, the load of space). I hope to keep her running for as long as possible.
Thank you for this terrific review! I’ve owned my blue 2004 since new and, with some maintenance and occasional parts replacement, still runs great. A few thoughts and corrections: 1. The picnic table is standard issue from the factory and yes it’s a great surprise when you find it back there 2. The most significant mechanical changes to the refreshed Gen 2 (in my opinion) was the inclusion of a 5 speed automatic (up on extra gear from a 4 speed like mine) and side curtain airbags in the top trims for a major boost to safety 3. You get two (A and B) trip mileage calculators if you push the right side dash stalk by the speedo 4. In the automatic, the coin tray/ ashtray thing is a pop-out cup holder since the gear shift is up on the dash. It would definitely get in the way with the standard transmission.
I loved my 04 CR-V for the short time I drove it. With some snow tires, it is practically a snowmobile! It has 115,000 miles and runs perfectly. A friend of mine has an 03 5-speed with 450,000 miles! Only problem with his is that whistle you mentioned and broken AC. The whistling is common with 2nd/3rd gen CR-Vs, I believe it is due to a pinhole in the exhaust somewhere.
OMG slayyy. This video is everything. Who needs netflix when you have Bern on Cars, not only preaching the truth about how 2nd gen CRVs are gods gift to drivers, but ALSO being surprisingly hilarious
I have an 06, red with beige interior all-wheel-drive EX automatic. One of my close friends from high school has an elderly father who I noticed kept it in his garage up in Philly since we were in high school. Going on 12 years now 😂 and I always noticed that rear end with the tire sticking out of the garage when they’d open it. He told me if I could get it out of the garage, I could have it. He’s a bit of a hoarder so it was an all day thing, but ended up plugging a jump box in it when I cleared everything out around it and saw it only had 60k miles 😮😮😮😮 this past 2 years I brought the thing close to brand new: new tires and brakes/rotes/lines, new suspension, did all the services etc. All new plastics on the exterior. Threw in an Prioneer Apple CarPlay screen too which turned out really nice. Couldn’t believe how many people walk up to me in the parking lots down here in Florida at the supermarkets and offer me money for it on the spot. I have a 2014 MX5 Miata, and Tacoma. All the same color combos, didn’t do that on purpose either 😂 But probably going to sell both of them and just hold onto this. Love it.
Ha, I'd just emailed a friend, 20 mins ago, saying that I daydream about getting back to work (I'm 73, 7 yrs retired). Heading to Houston, TX to teach. And that I'd buy an acre+, a Walmart tiny house, some Nigerian dwarf goats...and a 2nd Gen Honda CRV! So, thx: you've backed my long held belief that these are good, solid vehicles. Blessings!
I have a 2005 CRV Very reliable Bought at 121k Now it has 180k Repairs Knock sensor, thermostat, housing, brakes, and calipers , axle. Never let me down very reliable car
I love this ride. Got 04 silver lx. 315,187 on odometer. All I go is change the oil,had it since 2006,did have to swap out the transmission at 223000 but other than that she's a tank
I still have my Honda CRV LX 2004 with 128k miles, I love it but I had to replace my entire A/C system in 2016. I've replaced my alternator in 2021. In 2024, I've had to replace knock sensor, wheel rims, engine mounts, serpentine belt, brakes, trans oil pressure switch and P02 sensor circuit. My cruise control recently stopped working so that is another thing I will have to get fix. I want to keep my CRV for another 100k so hopefully no more issues come out this year.
The 2nd gen crv is somehow special here in the Philippines. We have the regular version just like the one here, and there’s another version only found here in the Philippines which is the 10-seater version which we fondly call the 10-cheater. There are articles online about how Honda Philippines decided to make that montrosity exclusive to our country😊
Just brought a 2gen 2005 CRV LX with 175,000 miles after struggling to find one that ppl weren’t skull bashing for even tho I felt like I paid a little too much still got lucky. I now want to mod it with a lift kit and some other interior mods.
I drove a 2002…got 249,000 miles on it. The best car!! The A/C was the only problem with it. I loved that it included a foldable table under the floor in the back end
Not only do I know somebody who drives one of those cars, but I also drive one of those cars myself. Also with a stick shift. I absolutely love this car.
We had a first gen growing up we didn’t know the table was in it until we got rid of it lol. Just found your channel yesterday and watched probably too many reviews 😂 keep up the good work!
I Recently Bought A 1999 CRV. It Is An Excellent Luttle Rig! But The Seller Lied To Me About It's Conditions. I Found It Needs Motor/Transmission Mounts, All 4 Shocks and An Oil Pan Gasket. Which Is No Big Deal For DIY Home Repair. But At A Shop It Will Cost Just About The Same Price As I Paid For The Rig. Debating On Just Buying Another CRV 2nd Gen And Sell The 1999 1st Gen. It Is A Great Little Rig But I Have No Ability To Do The Work Myself.
I had the 98 forever and kept holding out for the stick version of this generation. They are in demand! I ended up getting a 2011 Hyundai Elantra touring. Same cargo space, just as light and stick shift! You should review it!
Ben, I am only 1/2 way through you CRV video, & now I like it better than my MDX. Thank you for your videos,... watched a bit more of your video. Noticing a bit of maybe stain on the arm rest, & wondered, if the rig was detailed, maybe a friend or detailer that would like to make a name for them selves "Ben's Detailers" would do the work, your video item would be as good as it could get, & your lender would be very happy, & more may be willing for you to show their older rig. Just a thought :-) Love your video reviews. When the CB-750 came out, Honda has always had a nice sound, & AWD, your tires will have some sound, they will grip what they can, mud, rain, snow... as safe as can be. You see the Nicest People on/ with a Honda. Thank you Ben :-) Just before you ended, I had a thought... What if... the cars, some, maybe not all, could be sold because of the detail & review. People could see a car type, & year, cleaned up, reviewed, & maybe even sold. I am sure that would be a very small % of the cars your review, as you would not want to be known as Ben, The Car Seller... But, a review could interest some to the rig they really should have, & if the owner really is not using the potential, why not get something that does. It would be really cool, if your video prompted a person to have you review their rig, & that led them to want another in your video. Just thinking, maybe...
I appreciate you watching! Yeah sometimes I help my friends sell their cars, and the videos certainly help! My friend Louis does detailing by trade so he cleans most of the stuff I film, but this one definitely could use a good cleaning too haha
I got a 05 crv that I daily with super low mileage, just hit 86,000 miles, saves gas so i don’t need to use my truck when I don’t need to load anything
I love the voice during the powertrain explanation lol. I had an accord 7th gen with the same powertrain and yes indeed K24 are not all created equal. I’ve had a few Hondas 4 cylinder and V6, all manual, and this powertrain was the worst by far. Zero shifter feel, terrible steering, power was decent, could do burnouts in the wet, but the whole car just felt like shiht. And the trans lost 5th and reverse was whining when I sold it around 160k. Those trans are known to be glass
I have always liked this generation and have seen a few manuals pop up here and there, but do to their rarity the manual is always overpriced. I recently rented a new 2024 CRV that was fully loaded for two weeks to drive cross country and back with my family. It was a wonderful vehicle when not in the mountains as the CVT does not have pre set selectable gears like other manufactures have, making the many steep grades difficult to navigate, but over all, when put into S it did okay. The overall gas millage was 28mpg but that was with going through multiple mountain passes there and back and at time around 90mph for hours.
it is true utility vehicle for normal people which don't need a truck every day to day life. that e brake handle really threw me off when i saw it first time. later year of that 2nd gen has, heated front seats as well. I was looking for one, because it fits perfect commuter car with space and easy to replace audio. Audio stands at driver's eyesight perfectly. For automatic, the shift is at the steering column, so it definitely saves the room in the middle. between driver and passenger. like you mentioned, one bad thing is transmission. I wish automaker bring back old designs with new tech and improved system.
I was looking at finding one of these in the 3rd generation. It’s hard to decide whether I want this or an xc70 haha. But I don’t even got car buying money yet 😝 nice video.
The XC70 isnt so reliable as the CRV 2nd. Gen. Go for the Honda if you want reliability. On the other Hand you have to hold some many back for the Awd System of older Volvos. @@BernonCars
I’m 15 and my first car is this exact with the 5 speed it’s on 184k and the people we bought it from maintained it decently how long do you think it will last me?
Nice ride. Do yourself a favor and check out the 2010-12 Ford Escape Limited with(!) navigation package. I bed you'll love it. But get the Limited. And with navigation package. You'll love it.
Looked at a 2005 Honda CR-V LX today that the dealer wanted $8900 for. I'm sleeping on it, this video just happened to be recommended to me. Can't decide if the price is worth it. It legit looks like it never touched the road, despite having 138k miles. Pristine and looks brand new, can't find a scratch on the exterior or a bit of wear on the interior. Under the hood looks fresh out of the factory. I love it, but I can't decide if I should buy it.
@@BernonCars It was a bit too steep, I ended up passing on it. It was the most immaculately kept used car I'd ever seen, but money is money. Going to keep an eye on the market, got a few months before my current car will fail inspection haha
I found an 05 where im at with 145K miles for $5,600 which to me is too much for a 19 year old car. I'm thinking $4,500 would be fair. What do u think? Is the dealers price a fair price or should i try to get them to lower it?
We had a Honda crv, the vehicle never got us stuck in snow. Always started right up, honda signature of course, closing the door is ridiculously easy and light. My father got rid of it years ago and he regrets it now, literally out of all the vehicles we owned, it was the most reliable. The handling felt great, but the big shock for me is how comfortable this car is, I go as far to say that the honda crv is more comfortable & more upscaled interior than the toyota RAV4 in the 2000s. Lastly, Honda CR-V has a 5 speed manual or automatic, the Toyota RAV4 has a 4 speed automatic and a 5 speed manual.

My dad passed away at 74 and left his 2nd gen crv. I never loved a car like i did now.
Oh wow that's a special little car for sure

Mate! I am looking at a manual '06 CRV later today - thank you for uploading this!!
Ohh woww what a coincidence!! Im glad you found this haha! Let me know if you buy it!
Ohh thank you for the notes! I completely forgot to mention all that!

How much did starter motor work cost?
I was a Honda salesman and at that time we couldn't keep them in stock. Definitely still looks great

For sure bro I appreciate you!
Thank you Ben :-)
Just before you ended, I had a thought... What if... the cars, some, maybe not all, could be sold because of the detail & review.
Good video, ill wait for the second gen automatic review.😀
Thank you, haha yes!
My mom bought her 2003 CR-V brand new. Since I started driving in 2006, her CR-V has outlasted my Neon, Milan, and Elantra... Lol!
Wowww that's fantastic! 😂
I got a 05 crv that I daily with super low mileage, just hit 86,000 miles, saves gas so i don’t need to use my truck when I don’t need to load anything
Nice!! That's so low!
I don't know Bern I think you should give the 1st gen manual a go! I think you'll love it...
I still have to drive one of those!
2002 CRV AWD owner. Great little car with big space.
Decent gas mileage for a 22yr old vehicle with AWD.
Very nice! Yeah they're excellent!
Haa LOL 😆😆
I have always liked this generation and have seen a few manuals pop up here and there, but do to their rarity the manual is always overpriced. I recently rented a new 2024 CRV that was fully loaded for two weeks to drive cross country and back with my family. It was a wonderful vehicle when not in the mountains as the CVT does not have pre set selectable gears like other manufactures have, making the many steep grades difficult to navigate, but over all, when put into S it did okay. The overall gas millage was 28mpg but that was with going through multiple mountain passes there and back and at time around 90mph for hours.
Nice, not bad. Yeah the 24's aren't bad either, just a totally different experience haha
it is true utility vehicle for normal people which don't need a truck every day to day life. that e brake handle really threw me off when i saw it first time. later year of that 2nd gen has, heated front seats as well.
Yeah they are great! So easy to customize, good old Honda haha
had an 04 and hit a deer with it. bought two elements. both of those got totaled too.. now im in an 08 crv lol
Shiit! Bad luck LOL
2005 honda crv owner here 🙋🏻♂️
Woohoo!
The Pilot especially has that “whistle” that the CRV has. Plus I’m getting my uncles 2003 Pilot with around 278,000 miles on it.
Oh nice yeah O2 sensor whistle haha. Ohhh nice!!!
the 2nd gen model had very few 5spds made and are getting super rare to find.
Right, I don't see many at all!
Good explanation
Thank you!
I was looking at finding one of these in the 3rd generation. It’s hard to decide whether I want this or an xc70 haha. But I don’t even got car buying money yet 😝 nice video.
Haha thank you! Both really good, and I do love the XC70 lol
The XC70 isnt so reliable as the CRV 2nd. Gen. Go for the Honda if you want reliability. On the other Hand you have to hold some many back for the Awd System of older Volvos. @@BernonCars
Man I wish Honda still made their diesel engines. That 1.6L and 2.2L inline-were amazing.
A diesel CRV here would be fantastic

This was my dream car for a while because of the rear hinged door
Yeah just like the old Passport! It's cool haha

@@Newussd227 LOLL grrrreaat!
Man, you got a check engine light on this good car
Oxygen Sensor 😂
@@BernonCars The car is so good that you could just consider these minor things as welcome lights🤣
But I'm kidding, the car is actually good.
Are these ok for off-roading? Like bot extreme off roading just like being able to drive through looser sand and what not
They're not bad for light trails and stuff! Just let some air out of the tires to 20ish if you drive in sand
@@BernonCars ok cool! Thanks!!
I’m 15 and my first car is this exact with the 5 speed it’s on 184k and the people we bought it from maintained it decently how long do you think it will last me?
many years and miles to come, as long as you maintain it. That would include keeping up with changing all the fluids in a timely manner.
Yeah it'll easily do another 184k with fresh fluids and such! Congrats bro!!
Nice ride. Do yourself a favor and check out the 2010-12 Ford Escape Limited with(!) navigation package. I bed you'll love it. But get the Limited. And with navigation package. You'll love it.
@@mr.2cents.846 I'm sure it's fabulous! 🤩
I have the same one it's amazing
Lets go! That's great!
Interesting! That's honestly pretty expensive, especially considering its an LX! It would treat you well, but that's a bit steep in my book!
@@BernonCars It was a bit too steep, I ended up passing on it. It was the most immaculately kept used car I'd ever seen, but money is money. Going to keep an eye on the market, got a few months before my current car will fail inspection haha
Good call, I wish you luck!
You are so underrated
Thank you 🙏🏾
Mine shakes at 60mph. After New tires and alignment it still shakes. Any ideas?
Strange. Maybe road force balance on the tires.
My 2002 has 318,000 miles. Running it until the wheels fall off then I'm buying an 06
Nice!! As you should!
When you ignore inflation 💀
2nd Gen is a Classic
100%!
I kept the 1st gen because it has wishbone suspension on all four conners
Ohh true that's a good point
I'm the one that loves the CR-V
Me too!!
I have one....beautiful vehicle
Great choice!
Honda CR-V ❤
My crv whistles as well I got 365k on the dash
That's funny, chuggin along!!
The Baby GX 470
LOL right!
Terrific !!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!!
The new pilot window design appears to be a homage to this 2nd gen crv.
I see that!
I found an 05 where im at with 145K miles for $5,600 which to me is too much for a 19 year old car. I'm thinking $4,500 would be fair. What do u think? Is the dealers price a fair price or should i try to get them to lower it?
That's honestly a good price for one with those miles too! What trim?
@@BernonCars EX. Maybe max $5K for me
@@BernonCars EX. But $5,600 is still too much imo. Maybe $5K max for me
My favorite fact about these are that some were built in England
Oh interesting!!
When life has sucked your soul, you buy a crv

My pleasure! Thanks for watching!

Nice Honda
Yeah!
crv passport and pilot are all good cars
Yes indeed!
You probably don't know that nothing front seats can recline back for sleeping.
I did!
I Have 2003 model. Is the best 👍👍👍👍
Nice very good!!
Incorrect CRV stands for CERTIFIED RACING VEHICLE
LOL!! I read "inccorect" and was like "oh no a heckler" 🤣
VTEC BABY!!
This...or the second generation Nissan X-Trail?
Nice, yeah I find these older CR-V's more appealing than most of the older RAV4's!
@@BernonCars Without a doubt, for sure.
Headlights looks new.
Right!
CR-V 👍👍👍👍👍🇰🇬
Why check engine light turn on at 19:30?
Nice and satisfactory video, cheers!!
Thank you!!
Oxygen senor, that's why it whistles too 😂
they copied the light design from the gx470. i understand honda whated to make it fuel efficient but should have made some with v6
Haha right and they came out and nearly the same time 😆 a V6 in this would be a hoot!!
1st gen best gen
