  • Between 2002-2006, Honda made the 2nd generation CR-V, which grew in size and gained power from the 1st gen. 20 years later, these crossover SUV's are very popular amongst people looking for an an inexpensive car with All-Wheel-Drive. But how good are they? How reliable? And more importantly, will one suit your needs?

bro literally missed the chance on the best party trick🤦🏻‍♂️! When it comes to sleeping if you remove headrest from driver and or passenger seat slide the front seats foward lean them all the way back, they will lay flush with the back seat literally converting them into one big resting couchbed seat once rear seats are leaned back!!

I bought a 2005 CRV with 200k miles on the clock in January. This car is a time capsule to the turn of the century. Only one intermittent wiper speed, no telescoping steering wheel, it starts without my foot on the brake. It’s a reminder of just how much Honda was killing it in the late 90s and early 2000s, making simple cars with everything you want and nothing you don’t.

Couldn't agree more, and honestly, that had been their mission since the beginning when they imported the 600 Sedan and Coupe to the US, and then followed with the CVCC Civic and Accord. Currently looking for a 2nd Gen myself, having recommended them and the Gen 1 and Gen 3's to people for years.

@@josephpuchel6497 I really like the one I purchased a month ago in non-running condition. Took me a couple weeks to get it running, because I was waiting on parts, but it's finished and is great.
I'd recommend having your inspected by a local Honda dealer, and if you decide to purchase it, have them do a full service on it, so that you start out with fresh transmission fluid, rear differential fluid (if it's an AWD model), power steering fluid, brake fluid, air filter, cabin filters, engine oil and filter change, and a serpentine belt. Pay attention to the round bushings at the front mounting point of the front lower control arms, as those are typically cracked badly, or torn completely out.
These are outstanding cars and I think you'll love it.

@@josephpuchel6497 Still solid after 12k in under a year. The O2 sensor can be fussy and trip the check engine light if you have an exhaust leak, but I've been driving mine with the CEL on all year. Still getting close to 30 mpg highway.
Ask your mechanic to look at the axle carrier, and the VTEC actuator.

The 05-06 CRV is better than the 2002-2004 models. They have improved all wheel drive, 5 speed auto transmission and optional leather interior and better stereo. I had an 03 and bought an 06 and it gets better gas mileage (30 mpg highway) and much nicer to drive with the leather seats and leather steering wheel. This is the roomiest and best looking of all the CRVs. Super-duper reliable. Get 235 70-15 tires to make it look better and get better gas mileage. I still see so many of these on the road - the only thing that stops them is getting in an accident. Otherwise they will easily drive over 300k if you just change the oil every 5k and change trans fluid and dual pump differential fluid every 50k.

Still running good. Gas milage improved using Chevron Techtron additive. One reason I bought the Honda over same year Toyota, was the rear window on the back Door flips open with a switch. If I need to haul some 10 foot 2x4s they just slip in the back without having to tie them to the roof racks. Hope to put another 110k on it.

It's a very utilitarian car. I bought a 2004 about two years ago. I did end up having to get some work done on it. But the exterior and interior were in good condition. It's a great car. I needed a car to explore our local mountains as well as around town. It had good ground clearance and the Real Time AWD works great in the occasional snow and mud I run in to. The gear shift and E Brake on the dash. So quirky.

Put decent tyres on a Mk2 CRV for winter mud and snow - and it’s great.
We have two - an ’05 and ‘06.
With the Diesel engine we get 50mpg from the 6 speed manual gearbox.
In the past 6 years, we’ve covered over 100,000 miles with just a couple of major issues… camshaft spindle snapped on the 05 - rear suspension collapsed on the 06 (due to previous owner backing his boat into sea water continuously - causing extreme rust).
AC has packed in on both cars (rarely needed on the Irish Sea coast) otherwise just routine servicing. They’re good for 300,000 - so won’t be changing ours anytime soon.

They are fun to drive on the forest roads and light offroading, they can fit and turn around on tiny trails that no other car would dream of. Also the approach and departure angles are awesome. Just watch the gas tank that hangs down unusually low on the driver side rear, so ground clearance is mediocre for a crossover. It has a steel cage around it but I still wouldn't try bashing over a rock.

The dome light often dosen’t turn on because 1: fused bulb,
2: if the switch by the door is broken due to the seat belt getting trapped in the door breaking the pressure switch.
If it is the latter turn your headlights on with the engine off, open the door and the car will not alert you to having left your lights on. Unfortunately this lead to me getting a flat battery once so I went on eBay, ordered a new pressure switch (it was really cheap) and it is literally just one screw and a push connector.
The differences between MK2 and MK2 facelift is:
    Reinforced B Pillar
    Introduction of curtain airbags
Pre facelift only had side airbags on Executive and Later SE Sport before the upgrade.
And a few minor style updates such as different alloys different tail lights, cut out rear headrests that push down to the height of the seat, slight front bumper refresh with round instead of oblong fog lights on the cars that have them.
The facelift model also gets a 5 speed automatic rather than the older 4 speed transmission.
In Europe/UK we had the option of a 2.2 I CDTI diesel manual only (stick shift)
And a 2.0 Petrol. Automatic or manual.
I have driven both, for me I like the Petrol automatic, owning one 2003 currently and previously has another 2 of them, I just keep coming back to these cars. There is a lot to like.

Reliable CRV and easy to maintain. Electrical issues with bulbs burning out every year ( or every 7 months like mine) prob due to harness and also hate the idle air code always popping even though I have cleaned the darn thing and even replaced. The fuel range is 250 miles to a full tank so not that great. But she is very reliable! 262k and marching on

@@YoungAmzn Starting in 2005, the Gen2's received all of the modern safety features. So they have side curtain, as well as seat air bags, and VSA (vehicle stability control). They also received a 5 speed automatic transmission, instead of the 4 speed that the previous models had, the AWD system was improved, and the issue with the a/c compressors failing (commonly referred to as "the black death") was resolved. There was also a slight change to the bumpers with the front getting round fog light openings. The tail lights were changed to not have the amber turn signal at the top.
Finding a 5 speed manual transmission model is a challenge, because very few were made.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your search.

@@glennhansel9411 I've had my 5spd manual for 2 months now. Plenty of around-town driving, and a pair of road trip: one was just all freeway, point A to point B, and back, 6hrs round trip, and the 2nd was long distance 2 lane, then twisty mountain roads into a national park, at about 4-1/2hrs each way. I love that it's a 5sp model, but I'm not sure it's "the better" version of a Gen2. I don't like the light flywheel and the lack of low-end torque. I don't like the rev-hang that the engine does, between shifts in order to control emissions...which on my car has worn out the 3rd gear syncro so I have to shift very careful and slow, or I get an ugly "crunch." I don't like that it holds the throttle open on long decelerations where engine braking would be really beneficial. I don't like the bump in rpms that the engine does in parking lots, every time the steering wheel is moved. It's also got a little thing the engine does when you're just barely on the throttle, like coming down a long grade on the freeway, so you're not completely off the gas, but are just holding light throttle. The engine does this little "I'm on....I'm off" jerk, as if I'm repeatedly taking my foot on and off the gas. Car runs and drives beautifully, but I think the driveability issues that I'm describing probably are smoothed over by an automatic transmission. No regrets on the purchase, but I come from the German car world, where these sorts of issues have never existed.

Just bought a 2005 CRV a month ago after driving a 2001 Accord for 10 years, both with 5-speeds. The ride of the CRV is punishing after the Accord. I have to treat speed bumps as though they were curbs. The gas mileage is mediocre compared to the Accord, even though the engine is only 100 cc's bigger. I think it's because the gearing is so much lower. This car should have had a 6-speed with a higher highway gear. I'm averaging 24 mpg after 30 in the Accord. I already changed plugs (car has 106K miles). I'm going to replace the PCV valve next. Love this car on rough roads though. My heart was in my throat on some National Forest backroads before; now I smile. I know the CRV won't drop the bottom onto a rock. Another small complaint: the red needles on the instruments are invisible when wearing sunglasses; they should have been white like the numerals and letters. Still glad I bought this car. The engine hums like a sewing machine.

Set the cruise control at 55 mph on the highway. For example, on the K24 engine, the cam switches over to V-TEC right around 56 mph, and the other cam gets way worse mileage. They made it that way on purpose, because 55 is the typical speed limit.
In other words, the engine is designed to get good mileage at 55 or below, while cruising. No amount of tune ups will change the way the cams are designed... but it is true that using accessories like AC, heater fan, will cause the alternator clutch to engage, which causes the engine to consume more fuel -- a best case scenario for MPG is having a bit of traffic on the highway that causes you to drive at a steady speed of around 40 mph in 5th gear, with no stop-and-go, in daylight, no rain, and temp of around 70° (making AC unnecessary).
Also, take all the junk out of your car, including the rear seats (if you don't use them regularly). And keep your tires properly inflated.

    • @hxhdfjifzirstc894
      @hxhdfjifzirstc894 7 месяцев назад

I forgot to mention that when these cars were made, gasoline was not mandated to have ethanol added (which reduces MPG). Also, the EPA might have rated MPG differently back then. So your current calculations aren't 'apples to apples' with the old ratings.

This generation CRV is a little too old for me. I would go with a 2014, just before they switched to a cvt transmission. The only reason why I would consider a CRV is last year when my wife bought her 2011 Honda Fit, the Honda dealership replaced the brakes, the suspension, the light bulbs, the indicator lights, and touched up the paint, free to us.
I was not expecting that. I currently drive a 2011 Mazda CX-7 2.5 fwd base model, so when that dies or I get bored, I would consider a CRV myself. A little side point, up here in Canada we got the European/Japanese only Nissan X-Trail from 2001-2005 I think. It was based on the altima, it had the 2.5 and 4 speed auto. Same size suv, they are now popping up around here with stupid low kms for really cheap. And just like this year CRV, it has a quirky little attitude.
