Oh shit, I used to own (sold it very recently) a flyer that was sent to me by Circle One and the little blurb / balloon that the guy in the flyer is saying is the same thing that starts GI Combat, about having killed the enemy, I caused it but I can't do it anymore. That was written on the flyer!
I got here because I was looking for more info on John Macias as I was about to post a comment elsewhere here on RUclips about my story of John Macias. That being the case I think I will copy and paste that comment here also because ... it is relevant.
John Macias was from my home town of Pico Rivera and was one grade above me and graduated in 1980 from the same high school El Rancho. There are 2 distinctive things that I remember about John and one was his little brother who was in my grade, and the other is the first time I ever saw John.
First was John Macias' little brother (I do not remember his real name) we all called him Homegrown. Because he was ALWAYS trying to sell marijuana in high school that he grew himself, hence the name Homegrown. He was a tiny wirey kind of guy who was very hyper and sort of annoying. John on the other hand was HUGE! As Henry Rollins points out he was the kind of guy you would think was pumping iron 24/7 because he was just massive ... but he didn't. He was just naturally a really BIG guy.
Second is the first time I ever saw John. It was in 1979 and ALL of us still had long hair at that time. My group in particular had REALLY long hair. We were the stoners and were proud of it. So we showed this in the way we wore our hair ... really fucken long. Anyway, John had just seen Pink Floyd The Wall in concert the night before and was wearing the concert T-Shirt. That is why I remember John, because my friend Mike who knew John yelled out to John "Did you go to the show?" with John responding that the show kicked ass or ... whatever. I just remember asking "Who's that?" with the answer "Homegrown's brother".
Then 2 years later in 1981 I go to see Circle One (ALL of us short or no hair now) at The Cuckoos Nest in Costa Mesa, almost get my ass kicked by Cowboys from next door at Zubie's (one of them yelled "Punk Rock sucks!" to which I immediately responded "FUCK YOU!!! .... uhhhh why did I just yell that?!?" AHHHH RUNNNN!!! I was by myself).
But this is where it gets blurry for me. Because I have heard conflicting accounts of John at this point. One is that John is the leader of the punk "gang" The Family. And that they go around serving their own sort of vigilante justice on "The Scene" with John being the main instigator of this so called justice. A good friend of mine who was more into this scene than me says John would beat people up at will in a very malevolent (evil) way. And my friend would have no reason to say anything bad about the guy unless he had seen something with his own eyes. But then you got Henry Rollins extolling the virtues of John and John being this sort of benevolent (good) being. What I do know is if John was the leader of this gang, it would sort of make sense in a twisted way. Because I grew up in Pico Viejo (Old Pico) vs John in Pico Nuevo (New Pico). I grew up on the older side of town vs him on the newer side of town and there were Mexican gangs that reflected this. Basically we grew up with Mexican gangs ALL AROUND US. So to me it was like "Really, we need another gang?". But from his viewpoint it may have come naturally since he may have seen the unity that those gangs had. I don't know, but can just speculate. Anyway, what else I do know is that John was actually mentally ill as in having severe Bipolar problems in his head, and ... don't quote me on any of the following but something like ... about 10 years later John goes nuts one day, punches a German tourist lady in a McDonald's in Santa Monica and is subsequently shot dead by Santa Monica police on the Santa Monica pier. And ... Henry Rollins can pick up the story from here.
    Uh ... Henry?
No, I do not know Henry :-)

There was some interview where he said he changed for the better and left the punk scene completely, but then came back to it later with a more positive attitude. Maybe his changes of mind over time also help explain the two portrayals of him? Regarding his death, I heard that he was street preaching at random people crazily and people didn't like it, and someone pulled a knife on him, and he threw someone off of the pier, and when the police arrived he charged towards them and was shot multiple times in the chest. Not sure if his final meltdown was due to the mental issues or drugs, or both.

John had sort of a split personality. You were either with him, or against him. To us kids living at the Wig Factory, he was a protector, he got us food and supplies and watched out for us. I heard a few stories about him b** up guys for minor stuff, though.
You didn't ever want to eff with him.
Once at the Wig Factory he was getting ready to go out somewhere, and put on a stocking cap. My friend said, "Going chopping?" and John grabbed him, then started slapping him. He was doing it in a controlled way; you could tell he was working hard to hold back. He just kept on kind of medium-slapping him now and again for about five minutes while staring at him. Didn't respond to anything the guy said - the guy was practically crying at this point - just kept on doing it, then finally let him go. He didn't really hurt him, but he definitely scared him.
Another time he pulled a guy I was fighting off me and told him, "Leave him alone!" It was all in how you treated him. If you gave him respect, and he knew you a little so you weren't a complete stranger, you'd generally be fine. He was violent, though, and he could be unpredictable.
