Great analysis looking at angles and understand levers at mile 21. I believe the fatigue factor does play into these angles and its what makes this games so dam interesting and fun to watch. Great job! Now off to train and engage my hamstrings more.

Incredibly informative, and as a happy beginner, I can easily relate to this. I would compare it to when you biking, and are on top of the gear, instead of trying to push through a gear you dont have the power for. Crowie is very much on top of his run and controlling the full motion, while Lieto looks like his just trying to survive. For me it translate to reminding myself "be on top of your run" and just recall the picture of Crowie running. Thanks!

Do you think bad form is a symptom of something else(depleted energy) This video is shot when Craig is surging so his stride is longer. Chris just beat everyone up on the bike and didn't manage his energy. Toward the end of my run I am always spent and my form changes. Craig has excellent form but if you watch throughout the Ironman, it never changes. In one of his interviews he mentions it isn't about being fast but about not slowing down or making mistakes.

Cheers James great stuff, maybe a little on the tech side for my standard of running but every tip helps especially at my age.

it looked as though crowie's feet were landing straighter, ( only slightly ) than chris's
    great video. :)

Great analysis. "Heel to butt + knee lift" may not always be easy, but the decreased load through the quads is noticeable straight away. Like anything, it's practice. Creating a new movement pattern takes time. What do you think about their arm positioning?

I enjoyed your analysis James. Technique is an important dimension of our sport so personally, I do a lot of technique drills in training and think about gate & running mechanics when I watch others race. Question, what software do you use, I would be interested using it to assess my own run.

You hinted at the rotation being wasted energy but could it be that crowie is using that extra rotation to drive his arms, using that extra upper body momentum to keep raising that heel?
Or is the extra rotation a side effect of their fatigue??

Would you say Crowie lands with his foot parallel to the ground?

Why is picking up the trailing leg so important?

    Too long winded.
Leiti. Drive Forward AND Tall from the hips. Eliminate the 'floppy/weak' wrist action in favour of a more dynamic 'drummer' action. Relax more at the ankles. Of course none of this will help if he is not running enough kilometres annually AND running them all technically correct so he does not collapse at the waist as he is in this video.
Craig Alexander could also improve if he was more relaxed at the ankles in the flight phase of the run.
