Surely you need deeper foundations for this? Once the water gets under the concrete base level you could if you wanted push this over or move it freely?
Excellent video I learned a lot from this. I need to lay a block wall 12 blocks long and 3 high. I only have one of those plastic mixing trays and I'm wondering if I can manage with that or if I really need to hire a cement mixer which I don't want to do.
Thank you for the video! So helpful. One question how deep and wide do you build the foundation? I'm planning to do the same for a 1 metre tall wall. Which holding back soil which only half metre tall. Thanks for the help again
Great vid. Do I have to create a concrete base before laying the block. I notice you just put the mixer on the gravel and lay the block on. Your response will be appreciated
Thanks for making this video. It gives me confidence to build my retaining wall this weekend. What type of chippings you suggest I use? I do see many out there so not sure which one to buy.
Good morning this is exactly what the wife is asking me to build , how do I get the wall straight from end to end , I understand the level but it’s making the wall straight I’m worried about?
Hi. great video. trying to decide what bricks to use for my wall and these look great. are they just standard bricks? what measurements are they. thank u. jonny
Hi, I have followed your instructions and ratios but used builders sand mixed with gravel not sharp sand for the concrete… only planning on a 3 or 4 block high wall.
How high could you safely go laying blocks this way for a retaining wall (soil and only people walking on it)? Great videos by the way really helped me.
If your building a retaining wall this way it depends on what it's holding back but the higher you build the thicker you'd have to build, thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for this, any tips on how to make sure those dry blocks dont suck the moisture out the mortar? Or is it all in the mix? I think im getting the mix to a nice consistency but its drying out and not giving me enough "squish" to level out blocks...if that makes sense?
@@CyberWolfVR it boils down to durability and lateral strength in my opinion, that's not to say that houses in the UK during the early 1900 and earlier were built on concrete footings because not all of them were, some had brick spreader footings so the bricks were banked, some built on a raft and some didn't have any, this is often why you find some houses need under pinning because of substandard and non existing footings.
I that because the plastic grass is laid on a concrete slab? I suppose that it will retain water, but as its not earth or even any significant height I doubt it will "fail". You'll just have a soggy garden. But drains may have been a nice thought.
Yes single skin is fine but it's a bit harder, just take your time and don't go to high, go up 3 to blocks high then leave it go off before going all the way up 👍
thankyou so much..this video has been a great help for me to avoid being fooled by the builder.
Many thanks. This is exactly what I am doing now in the garden.
Great inspiration for a wee job I'm planning!
Lovely work - your previous videos helped me lay 42 blocks on Monday - thank you very much :)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed 👍

You can mix with your hand. Just labour intensive
@@onelove6971 Thanks onelove. I'm half way through the job and have been mixing by hand. It is very hard work but keeps me fit and strong :)
A little bit of knowledge gained from watching this could mean I could make a nice job, Of cause I would have this video at hand just in case 🌹

If your building a retaining wall you'll need a good footings, about 300mm deep by 400mm just to be safe, thanks for watching 👍
Great vid. Do I have to create a concrete base before laying the block. I notice you just put the mixer on the gravel and lay the block on. Your response will be appreciated
We made a stiff concrete mix and layed the first block straight on, but you'll be better off concreting the footings and leaving it dry first 👍

It must save a lot of muck by not putting any in the perps?
Gotta do a 4ft block wall tomorrow for a customer, first time I’ve done it myself on a live site, so this video has helped massively mate 👍🏻👍🏻
How much would a job like this cost if I would have to get someone to do it? Without the materials.
From £200 to £800 it depends where you are
I can’t any see any weep holes to release hydrostatic pressure. Is there a reason for that?
There's no need in this wall it's on for plant pots 👍🏻
Good morning this is exactly what the wife is asking me to build , how do I get the wall straight from end to end , I understand the level but it’s making the wall straight I’m worried about?
Just simply lay one block on Eather side and put a string line on the edge of the blocks and lay the blocks in between, 👍 cheers for watching
Top job Mr Evans 👍
Do you need a deep footing for a wall that will be 3 block on the fly high with the garden coming up to around the 2nd block
Hi. great video. trying to decide what bricks to use for my wall and these look great. are they just standard bricks? what measurements are they. thank u. jonny
Hi thanks for watching, they are concrete blocks 100mm x 450mm
nice job! how much did youy pay for them bricks?
Excellent wall job 🙂where did you get these concrete blocks from? Are they heavy ?
Hi, I have followed your instructions and ratios but used builders sand mixed with gravel not sharp sand for the concrete… only planning on a 3 or 4 block high wall.
Do you think the footing (3inch) will by ok with the builders sand? Thanks for you videos 👍
@@stukhokhar671 No problem if the ground you are laying on is fairly solid.
@@garrypainter3023 thanks, I dug down till harder ground, tamped down a load of gravel, and then poured the concrete on that.
Can you built wall by upright block instead of flat?
The answer is yes but not as a retaining wall, ie, a wall holding backfill such as soil or backfill.
U could. But won't be as stable. So suggest you would do both. One flat to two verticle spaces or something.
Have a good think
How long did you leave the footing for to dry or did you just go straight to it ? Thanks
Leave the concrete go off for a few days is best but in this video we used a hardener so the concrete went off quickly
Cheers mate
How come for 20mm joints ??
Great video
Can you build a wall with blocks flat for a driveway? About 2 metres high. What do you suggest for drainage? Thanks bud
Ye block on flat would be great, and either echo dains or decorative chippings for drainage
Was a layer of hardcore put down first before the layer of cement ?
No mate just concrete 👍
What’s the mix ratio for the footing? Looks like a mortar rather than concrete?
It's a 3 chippings 2 sand and 1 cement mix mate

Is it compulsory to ware tracky bottoms when your a bricky 😂
Do I need airbrick on a block retaining wall ?
No air brick needed weep holes at the bottom of the wall for drainage 👍🏻
@@thewelshbuilder2454 thank you

Try a tiny bit of washing up liquid in the mix while it's mixing 👍
@@thewelshbuilder2454 will give it a go! Cheers
9:45 people with OCD like "WHY ARE THERE 2 SMALL BLOCKS AHHHHHHHHHHHH" lol
😂 Sorry about that lol
They look like standard concrete blocks. Do you have any concern over water seeping in and freezing over the winter, cracking the block?
I’d assume they’d be getting rendered.
Its look like the owner is checking on you from time to time 😂
😂 Yep
He can check on us as much as he wants as long as he's bringing tea for us☕😂
thank you so much
The master cowboy in action
Why cement for footings, why not just lay a row of cement blocks in the trench? Isn’t it the same thing? Both cement..
Are you for real?
@@ChristopherLyon-r8v Tell me why it’s different then please? Yes, I am for real. Just trying to learn.
