Really loved your in-depth review! My one wish is that the original creator, Keita Takahashi, actually received royalties for the first two games he directed - Katamari Damacy & We Love Katamari, especially since the Reroll versions have been released.
Just got into it. Was playing the psp version for the last week getting my butt kicked lol. Kept rolling up the wrong stuff. Checked Xbox live and seen the reroll on gamepass. Been playing it a few hours ago and like it a lot! Trying to get better at it
We Love Katamari was the first ever video game I asked for growing up as a kid because I was really shy and always followed what my big brother wanted to do I didn't have "my" thing and that's when I found it, I remember asking for it when I saw a cute cover design for the PS2 and I fell inlove with it and after it's reroll i got it on my birthday June 12th (25 now) and just had to get all the trophies. I really missed it and it's just as great as I remembered it, Weird, Wacky, And you can feel the "Love" from the title put into it. It makes me smile knowing someone shares the same opinion thank you for putting it #1 💗
We Love Katamari was my first Katamari game. Played it back when it first came out and adored it. Nearly twenty years later and I still find myself popping it in and playing it. Such a beautifully designed and addicting game. Happy to see it got a re-release.
"Framerate has never really been an issue in Katamari." The PS2 games had massive framerate issues. Play the underwater level in WLK for a perfect example. Even the Reroll games have issues, at least on the Switch.
I just played that level on ps2 and it actually felt pretty smooth. Sure, it drops to the 20s a couple times but Katamari has never been about super fast reflexes.
My sister and I love playing We Love Katamari (PS2)! It is always our favorite game and after watching your review, I also agree that We Love Katamari is the best Katamari game! Also it's great to see other Katamari enjoyer as we are!
I remember when my brother first picked up Katamari Damacy when it was originally released. I was like Omg this game is so weird. Were they high? I almost dismissed it completely, but it caught my attention and I found I actually loved it. I have many fond memories of my usually nice mother laughing like a maniac when people started screaming. 😂 When it was released I was SO excited! But extremely disappointed that it seemed like they were never going to rerelease my favorite. Thankfully they just did, and I have been addicted since it came out. I even took off the day it came out (I had a day I needed to burn before the end of the month anyway). It is up there with Octodad - Dadliest Catch for weird but strangely addicting games. I wish that one was longer.
These are great games, but I wish they would expand on it a bit more and make it longer. I beat the original in under 5 hours, and totally loved it, but the other games feel like mostly the same thing.
Having only played Beautiful, seeing the clip of that stupid freaking heat level gave me the biggest PTSD, however I have heard legends about it's ursine predecessor... Edit: Was it the first one to go to space? If so, they really made it's progression at that stage fairly clever, since you start out in Japan, near most of the small countries. Edit 2: It's online stuff still works? Yet another 360 exclusive that's survived longer than Halo, let's go!
You never forget your first Katamari edition :) I grew up with xbox so OST from BK is iconic.. Boyfriend A GO GO, Katamarity by Kyoko, Sayonara Rolling Star, Katamari Dancing... even Danketsu ♡♡ Now i listen to music from all games (Disco Prince, Bluffing Damacy, Everlasting Love + You, Blue Orb, Que Sera Sera... & so many more) and I still think BK's lineup is on-par with the others
Absolutely love Beautiful Katamari! I remember trying to get really high on the leaderboards for some levels, I think the highest I ever got was 3rd on Vega, the top time was just so many leagues ahead lol. Great series, I'm really glad it caught on. Also bricks
I think the only stages that got reused on TMK were the Cows & Bears, Zoo, and then Snowman in the DLC and then there were a lot of them that were new. And also for MMK there was levels with non size related objectives on the Volcano island. But I still really enjoyed the video
I love how we can all collectively agree that Touch My Katamari was a mistake. I have never encountered a single person whose thoughts on the game weren't at best 'underwhelming' and at worst 'absolute trash that should have never been made'
The use of the rear touch pad was the best of any game on the system barring Tearaway. It fit SO naturally and perfectly, stretching it out and then tapping to go back to normal like it never happened, I will play newer ones and MISS being able to do it. Other than that, it was a little lame, but the music's great as always and like I said, the stretchy mechanic is amazingly implemented.
if you say its absolute trash your just wrong anyway Touch is a great game and the squash feature isnt just "slightly wider radius" that has no reason to exist
I think katamari forever ran poorly just because it's a ps3 game. Ps3 architecture is confusing to the point that even Valve couldn't figure it out, the ps3 version of the orange box was made by EA.
@ytphmaker2323 the way you have to code ps3 games isn't like other game consoles or pc. It's a whole different kind of computer than most programmers are used to. Theoretically, it's a really powerful console for it's time. However, because it's so different than what game developers were used to, most ps3 games ended up running worse than their Xbox 360 counterparts, even though the 360 was significantly weaker. Valve famously hated the ps3 so much that they had EA make the ps3 port of Portal for them.
After falling in love with the original I was excited for the remaster of We Love, especially since the internet seems to favour it but I don't get it. It is for sure a fun game, but feels like a case of quantity above all else. I can't put my finger on the exact issue but it really lacks the spirit of the original (maybe it's subliminal since it dropped the "damacy" (魂) which means 'spirit' in Japanese 😅). All I can think is the first seemed to have direction: playing the levels in order, along with the story, made me feel I was building to something (especially with the last level being so epic in terms of scope and soundtrack). We Love lacks this. The story that unfolds as you play is just telling you about the king, but it doesnt tie into what you're doing. So I can understand why, looking at it as just a game, We Love is more popular, since it offers plenty to do and good variety... but as an experience? It just doesnt do it for me. 塊魂 will always be my number 1.
I loved the video!! Your opinions are stellar and I agree with almost everything, except I would flip We ❤ Katamari and Katamari Forever. However, why does no one ever talk about KF's color filters??? It's hands-down one of the coolest parts of the game and is only present in Katamari Forever. I get that the framerate can diminish how pretty it can look in motion, but c'mon, that crayon filter absolutely crushes and makes replaying levels a total joy.
Touch My Katamari had the potential to revive the series but it felt so fucking depressing due to the fucked up art direction, reused content, horrifying king design, and micro transactions. It feels good to play, good controls, that’s about all that it has going for it. The soundtrack was okay but it doesn’t really feel like katamari to me either.
"slightly wider radius" Nah the squash and stretch in Touch my katamari actually bangs, you can flatten it out to steam roll people and things on mass without rolling in circles to pickup a few items game changer tbh
I hope we get a brand new katamari game. I think it would be cool if they made us roll up in new wacky places. Like if we start tiny in a jungle or something. Or maybe have us rolling up on the moon or mars or something. Just with wacky things the devs think could be in these locations. I think that would be fun to see and play through.
I would swap Katamari Damacy and Beautiful on your list, if only because I feel like the levels repeat a bit too much in Damacy and you always feel like you're going fast as a cannon ball. Still a good first entry, but I would definitely put it on the lower half of my personal tier list.
When someone is meant to find a flaw in something, there is no stopping... I played over and over the Katamari Forever and didn't notice that Frame rate dropping he mentioned. If you're telling me it happens on the underwater level, I tought it was because of being underwater, like in some Sonic games. We Love Katamari is the best game EVER. My first Katamari game, memorable and fun.
Katamari is the kind of series where there isn't much in the way of lore or continuing story, so it's pretty beginner friendly! Hop on with any game in any order, really.
my favorite katamaris are katamari forever and beautiful katamari katamari forever cause its the first game and i was really young and the bright colors caught my attention and beautiful katamari because despite having the buy levels to get all the cousins i really like the soundtrack its really good and it has online multiplayer (i think) (no one uses it anymore)
But it lacks the 1000000 roses level: rubber bands on your controller, and leaving the PS2 on for night after night.... Only to find out your son resets the profile at 900000 roses.....
i like touch my katamari. I KNOW I SOUND BAD BUT it has a cool gimmick that was very underused, but i mean it was my first game in the series, and then i played the first 2, and realized “wow this game SUCKS” but i mean its pretty much just a stupid game that i like a bit. JUST abit
I totally agree with the order, maybe I will say 1 and 2 are a tie, as playing Kamari in Full HD does give some nice extra, and the soundtrack of Forever has some kick-ass house tracks. But We Love has a more refined feel to it, and the campfire level is doable in We Love, where it is totally impossible in Forever. I have both your #1 and 2 signed by mr. Takahashi when I met him, so that is very cool, the best Katamari's signed by the designer.
Nah... Disco Prince of We Love alone is worth the newer OST. And then there is Everlasting Love. Another top 5 of the entire series. The only song from Damacy coming close is Wanda Wanda. The other top 5 tracks are from the PSP and PS3 games.
It is Japanese. And fun thing is that you can best speak the romaji syllables as if you are Dutch. I happen to be Dutch. So it is neither cat nor coffee. Coffee is too much "o" sound, cat is too much "e" sound. It is like the a in "half".
Really loved your in-depth review! My one wish is that the original creator, Keita Takahashi, actually received royalties for the first two games he directed - Katamari Damacy & We Love Katamari, especially since the Reroll versions have been released.
Katamari will always be my #1 weird comfort game

I really enjoy that they allow you to play the drive mode on all the levels of katamari forever in addition to having all the old levels
I remember when my brother first picked up Katamari Damacy when it was originally released. I was like Omg this game is so weird. Were they high? I almost dismissed it completely, but it caught my attention and I found I actually loved it. My mom absolutely hates these games lol. She regrets introducing me to them when I was a kid lol. Now she's cursed for life with katamari
These are great games, but I wish they would expand on it a bit more and make it longer. I beat the original in under 5 hours, and totally loved it, but the other games feel like mostly the same thing.
rolling things up is the future of gameplay

My favorite is beautiful katamari. I’ve never played the other ones but I grew up playing beautiful katamari with my mom, good times.
You never forget your first Katamari edition :)

Well, now you have. I really like Touch, my only complaint was that it was too short
I like Touch! The touch controls are “meh” but the game is fun. It IS too short, but the DLC levels make it at least decent length.
Touch My Katamari is fine. The way you unlock the DLC levels is absolutely horrid though, and the length is far too short. Killer soundtrack tho.
if you say its absolute trash your just wrong anyway
Touch is a great game and the squash feature isnt just "slightly wider radius" that has no reason to exist
Really well made video. I only played the psp version and now I want to try out the others.
I have yet to try a Katamari game so this video was very helpful in choosing where to start thank you!
So cool to hear Beautiful Katamari still works online🔥🔥🔥 After playing the first two Reroll editions, I'm definitely going to buy it!
*just picked up we love katamari for my ps2, what a beautiful game.*
I think katamari forever ran poorly just because it's a ps3 game. Ps3 architecture is confusing to the point that even Valve couldn't figure it out, the ps3 version of the orange box was made by EA.
they ended up figuring it out with portal 2 though
what do you mean? i dont understand what youre saying.
@ytphmaker2323 the way you have to code ps3 games isn't like other game consoles or pc. It's a whole different kind of computer than most programmers are used to. @krich451 idk, i like ps3
Oh and I bought the vinyl for Katamari a few years ago and looked up how much it was worth now and it was 500$. . .Nuts
This list made me bought Katamari Forever. I already like it a lot the two originals thought.
After falling in love with the original I was excited for the remaster of We Love, especially since the internet seems to favour it but I don't get it. gamepass just got We Love Katamari and i was pissed when i didnt hear the theme song from Katamari Damacy
They should make a crossover game titled Mr. Driller and Katamari for PS5, Xbox Series X and Switch.
what would such a game even look like?
I loved the video!! Your opinions are stellar and I agree with almost everything, except I would flip We ❤ Katamari and Katamari Forever. As all the Katamari games are on sale for the same price on the PS4, I really appreciate you untangling the details and which one to pick ❤
I'm so old I remember buying the soundtrack CD of the first Katamari. This is so awesome.
Touch My Katamari had the potential to revive the series but it felt so fucking depressing due to the fucked up art direction, reused content, horrifying king design, and micro transactions.
It feels good to play, good controls, that’s about all that it has going for it. The soundtrack was okay but it doesn’t really feel like katamari to me either.
got it recently and cant wait to play We Love Katamari reroll for PC 😭🙌
Are you gonna rank the street fighter series?
He should rank the Street Fighter 2 series and then the Rest.
"slightly wider radius"
Nah the squash and stretch in Touch my katamari actually bangs, you can flatten it out to steam roll people and things on mass without rolling in circles to pickup a few items
game changer tbh
16:36 Bro, play the credits. Best credits ever
I used to always play the mobile game amazing katamari damacy and recently found a way to play it again and having a ton of fun
Beautiful Katamari is underrated as hell, I will die on that hill.
The best beside the original...

I played the original in 2004 when it first came out and my friend introduced me to the sequel.
You can get we love Katamari on sale GG deals only $17
What's the song starting at 21:48? I can't remember and it's driving me crazy
Well its been a minute so I have forgot but its a lofi remix of something....
@@TotallyTubularJonathan Just found it lol. Lofi remix of Falke's theme from SFV, it's on soundcloud. Thanks

Four words: Wake Up the King
What katamari needed was a different environment imo. It would be cool if they went to the us
touch my katamari umm interesting choice for a title.
"Hey mom, can I get Touch My Katamari?" 🤣
Beautiful was my first and favorite
I was wondering if I can start with the newest one. Does it really matter?
Yes you can! Rlly the Katamari Franchise is only for the fun, not history
Katamari is the kind of series where there isn't much in the way of lore or continuing story, so it's pretty beginner friendly! Hop on with any game in any order, really.

All of these games scratch a nostalgic itch
Katamari Reroll and We love katamari reroll are the same game?
This is a great video! I agree with your list completely really.
(Small pet peeve, it’s pronounced kah-tah mari LOL)
Katamari is so relaxing
I respect your opinion buttttttttt. Katamari forever is the BEST one and that's not debatable 🤷🏾 it really is
But it lacks the 1000000 roses level: rubber bands on your controller, and leaving the PS2 on for night after night.... Only to find out your son resets the profile at 900000 roses.....

Great video. You’re awesome
Although all Katamari game plays the exact same and getting stale, it all still fun to play.
YOKOHAMA CRACKHOUSE SPOTTED????
in my opinion, Beautiful Katamari is the best
Actually on Xbox you can get the games for free with the cheapest pass
i like touch my katamari. I KNOW I SOUND BAD BUT it has a cool gimmick that was very underused, but i mean it was my first game in the series, and then i played the first 2, and realized “wow this game SUCKS” but i mean its pretty much just a stupid game that i like a bit. JUST abit

The original has way better music than we love katamari. That might just put it over the top as number one for me
