$100 Redneck Hot Tub-- A DIY Off Grid Simple Camping Spa

  • Well, technically it was done for $125, but honestly, with a used stock tank (they ARE out there- less so in my urban area) and a freebie oil barrel (not uncommon), you could probably make one of these pioneer style "cannibal hot tubs" for about $50. I live near Boston too and things here are more expensive than other parts of the country too, hence the general title of "$100". I did use a freebie piece of repurposed or found pipe for a chimney flue too. Anyway, this is a very simple DIY spa or hot tub project that would be great for any off grid homesteads or even for people in the low dough and light living tiny house and small cabin world. Yes, it takes awhile to heat up, but if you have an abundance of free wood (or even pallet wood) at your disposal, its really no big deal (and you can even cook or heat food on the top of it- its almost like a skillet or grill). I actually see the process of firing up this hot tub as an excuse to clear my yard of sticks and debris. All you need for this simple homemade DIY project is a stock tank, a metal barrel, a grinder, pavers, something to function as a flue pipe. some screws and a drill. A project like this doesn't require much skill or precision. Have fun with it! Note- I've seen other version of these on HGTV and DIY Network shows and so forth, but this version works well, and costs a lot less. You might want to landscape around it later though (as I plan on showing in another video) as it isn't all that "gorgeous"- again, it works WELL though- almost too well, as I'll describe.

    I was wondering about feet getting too warm, too. In your next video, would you show a shot of the wood burning section. Thx!
    I am going to go price stuff so I can make one of these soon :)

      Yes, good idea- I'll show the fire in the next update- and no, I haven't burned my feet- the fire end does get warmer though- and if that one section of the stock tank floor gets too warm for comfort you can prop your feet on the wall of the tank, or put a paver on the floor to dissipate/eliminate that direct heat.

      @@relaxshacksDOTcom Do you think an old clawfoot tub would work? If I can get a pretty good seal with the barrel? Super excited about this idea! Thanks!

    You should look at some of the water heater ideas from the Aprovecho website.

    Got an ad for hot tubs during your vid, lol. Pretty sure the crowd watching is thinking Craigslist for a freebie before buying new. Same types of people get rid of pool tables all the time, too.
    Anyhow neat project, Deek!
    This seems less destructive than the ones I see with a copper tubing heating coil needing to be welded or threaded into the water tank.

    This is very cool! I have questions:
    1. Do your feet get overly hot? Could they get burned?
    2. How long does it take before ash in the water creates lye?
    Looks amazing. I would Need a bigger tub so everyone can use it.

    • @relaxshacksDOTcom
      @relaxshacksDOTcom  3 года назад +1

      I've only been using the tub twice before each water change and not all that much ash is getting it, so I'm not overly concerned. Tub end does get hot, but only "burn hot" if you overtire the tub. You could always put a paver or something else in that end to put your feet on, but I haven't needed to.

    Hi. I used that tufftex from lowes. It rotted and crumbled in the sun under three years. Any thoughts?

    • @relaxshacksDOTcom
      @relaxshacksDOTcom  3 года назад +2

      You sure it was that kind by brand name? I have one structure that is over 10 years old now and its fine. There are other brands I used to use- Palruf and Suntuf which would crumble, but I've had zero problems with Tuftex- even with a structure I have in Joshua Tree, CA (blazing hot desert).

    How does the metal tub not get crazy hot?

    • @streetsshallprovide2029
      @streetsshallprovide2029 3 года назад +1

      If you over-fire it, it could, and in that case you can put a flat paver on the hot end to act as a buffer for your feet from the heat- I haven't had to though.
