    I am not a pro at any of the trades featured in this video. So this can be done by nearly anyone. You just need two main things: determination & time.
    I have worked in the construction business very briefly as a worker and then as supervisor for a few years. After that I did construction estimating for another 5 years or so, but my actual current job for the last 12 years+ has been sports video editing. So I apologize to the pros community in advance if something is not up to par here ;) but I strongly believe in alternative ways of building things. Even though an industry would like to tell you something cannot be done "the right way" unless you hire a pro, it's simply not true. I don't believe there is only one right way of doing something. I think we all have to find our right way.
    Anyways, if you have any questions about what I did and why, fire away and I will try to answer them the best I can!
    I trust my instincts and I do like to work with my hands (I like carpentry work especially) but I do play it by ear, figuring things out as I go along.
    I don't like making detailed plans ahead of time.
    My process:
    1. get an idea
    2. watch some RUclips videos. A lot of RUclips videos.
    3. tell the wife
    4. watch her roll her eyes at me
    5. plunge right into the project without making a clear plan
    6. figure things out along the way
    Like someone said: "if you know what you are doing, you are not learning anything"
    The project took a long time since we did all the work ourselves. About 2 months give or take.
    It cost upwards of $4k in materials.
    See the description area for a full parts and materials list.
    Thanks for watching!

      Very creative, love the idea I'm starting to plan my spring project and this is a great idea, question, how's is holding up, I'm a carpenter by trade and I like the idea of the 2xs framing for the walls (in on my field) just wondering if you had any sagging or movement by the water weight pressure against the walls, thanks

    • @Red.Scapes
      @Red.Scapes  4 года назад +13

      @@DavidJDM Thanks! No movement so far. It's a strong structure considering you have the 2x4s held in place by the plywood and durock screwed in every 8 inches or so and then a full mortar backing and then the tile. Time will tell but so far it feels as strong as making it out of concrete.
      The only issue I encountered so far was the caulking on the inside corners. Had to be replaced a few times because I used the wrong stuff (silicone) and then after getting the correct marine grade caulk (see description) I had to fix a few spots because they got loose due to my negligence when I applied it. You really have to dry & clean the area properly (using rubbing alcohol) and then let the caulk sit for more then 72 hours in temperature higher then 55 or so to cure. I used a heater with the covers on since it is winter here already.

      @jennifersnyder1405 3 года назад +1

      I'm not giving it a thumbs up or down but I hope no one does it this way. Those tiles are liable to pop off because he did not use the proper techniques. And the safety issues when he was cutting those tiles for the pipes! I was cringing as I watch those bare hands that close to an open blade. There's also gonna be a LOT of moisture issues in the structure from the ground. All I'm saying is if you're gonna do a diy project (especially if kids are involved) do your research and make sure you're following ALL safety precautions.

      @jaime del salto Hi, thank you for watching!
      The hot tub is doing great. No major issues or movement. We did have some problems with the caulk on the inside corners (kept coming off even when using marine boat caulk) so we ended up doing 2 coats of epoxy pool paint over the tile. The color change was also welcome.
      But the overall construction is holding up very well. No major movement after 3 winters.

      @jaandel1 Год назад

      @@Red.Scapes thanks its impressive also i have winter here NJ. But how you handle water or pipe frezze i cant still figure it out.
      Caulk issue probably bc of chlorine in the water.. maybe change filter system

    • @Red.Scapes
      @Red.Scapes  Год назад

      I agree. Chlorine is probably the culprit for the caulk failures.
      As far as pipes freezing, we keep the water level in the tub lower then the pipes so as to not have them full of water over the winter but still keep enough water in the tub to be over the ground level to help with the walls not pushing in from the freezing ground pressure.

    I admire the effort you put in on this project. A couple of things that will be helpful in the future: Before putting up the tile, do mesh and a layer of mud to make all the surfaces perfectly flat. You need 100% bonding of the tile and thin set for constant submersion. It’s pretty much impossible to get that without doing a aforementioned step. The only other thing I would have added would be a floor drain. Things settle, switching the filter to pull from the bottom from time to time makes life easy. Nice work!

      Absolutely killer project for sure. Super jealous in all kinds of ways related to your space. I keep my kiddos involved as well. It’s a whole job unto itself. 😂
      It must cost a fortune to keep that up to temp. We’ve got a tiny inflatable tub, which seems to cost 50-100 a month the keep warm. If I was you, I’d look for some used hot water solar collectors. People are going solar electricity only and stripping roofs of hot water collectors. You’d likely get them for free and it would save you a ton of money on electricity. You could even use them as a roof for your robes, etc...they’re traditionally 5’ x 10’. Might be able to source a smaller size as well...Congrats on getting those soaks in!

      We don't keep the water hot all the time though. It would cost a fortune, you're right.
      But I do need to harvest that sun energy, especially in the summer.

    With time anything can be DIY, good job taking that and running with it. Makes me happy to see someone's enjoying doing this kinda stuff with the drive and determination to follow it through all whilst saving money doing it.
    Even though I live in the middle of no where the county still requires licensed plumber, electrician, and contractor as well as a "reasonable time frame" and plans for a permit to even break ground for the project.
    So I just sit and live vicariously through others by watching then DIY thus stuff while I save up more money than need be necessary for my pool, hot tub, and garage.

    Just stumbled on your channel and we might be the same person. Video guy here but after my contractor bailed on me in the middle of a project on my first house ever I decided to learn myself. Its just nice to get off the computer too and utilize your hands for some building! Not only that, but we share the motto of "more than one right way" and also just doing it yourself even if you arent a pro. You'll enjoy your product much more if you made it yourself! As spring has just started, I'm gearing up to tear the yard apart and landscape for the first time in what seems like years for this house. Probably won't be getting around to making a hottub YET but thanks to your video, I know now its not impossible for someone like me! I think I've been watching too much Thermae Romae Novae ;)

      @@Red.Scapes Yeah! Theres tens of us! :p I actually am getting so excited for this project that I might just build one above water as a test with a shell for ponds as a temporary fixture to make sure I have the knowledge to fill it up, keep it hot, circulation, and draining. I really love that camplux set up. and I'm thinking if I get the big boy one (4.6 gpm) and maybe a refurbished little one (120 bucks!) to constantly circulate the water in and out to keep it hot. I recently got off a show called therme rome nova on netflix (an anime) and it put me into hyperdrive. Its about a roman bath designer, who slips or falls in water and comes out in modern japan. He freaks out about all the technology, but mostly about their bathing culture and how advanced it is. Its a fun lil show about how societies really love their bath culture and honestly, I wanna bring it to my yard! BTW, I think you have the best video out here since I've been looking for other videos too just to see how people are making them. One of your links to your smart plugs you used is 404 btw! OH and follow up question thats actually important... Do .... Do I need a permit for this kind of thing? I generally don't know where people fall on permits for a lil hot tub!

So many kids are glued to device's these days & parents can't get them out of their rooms to even take out the trash... but who gave them the device, the wifi connection, etc? The parents made them that way, now as parents we gotta change that. Gotta stop hoping & wishing, time to take action as parents.
