- I don't usually do reviews like this. But I'm making an exception this time. I hope it works out for everyone, because the CONCEPT is solid.

That "I would really like that for them" at the end was the most heartfelt sentiment I've ever heard in a gear review.
It sounds like there is at least one person at the company that knows shipping the lens that way is not acceptable, but hasn’t been able to get that heard. Hopefully this gets the message across.
I think this person might get fired. He probably shouldn't have mentioned him. The thing that confuses me is why they didn't want to send another lens.
I hope just the opposite happens. I think the company NEEDS this person if they are to succeed.
This might be the wake up they needed, thanks man.
Hugh, thank you for doing this review. Not only, as you said, perhaps this will be a wake up call for this company, but this also prevents others from supporting this business model. Running and growing a business is hard, but the feedback and corrections are essential. Perhaps this company will improve. Time will tell.
Saved me some money with this review. Was thinking about trying one of their lenses given their price. Thanks for the heads up.
We need a drummer that follows your talking rhythm and I'm sure we'd get a nice jazz. Great review!
That is a shame but lets hope they review their product and improve it because we need a range of more makers producing lenses that something different from the big companies at a price that keeps photography open to everyone.
You Sir, are a Wizard. A negative review about a product that was poorly implemented and didn't even work. And at the end, I left feeling hopeful for the company involved and wanting to be encouraging toward them. And I don't even shoot Leica or manual. Wow!
I like the refreshing perspective of this review. Even though negative, there's no punching down on a startup-in a situation where it would be easy to do and other reviewers probably would.
Kudos for your 'This is obviously your first effort, so try and do better next time' approach.
😉🖖🏻
I bought a AstrHori 75mm f4 lens GFX mount (manual focus) for less than US$300.00, and I was more than surprised how well this lens performed on the 100mp sensor, I'm definitely interested to see more of their products as their range of lenses are unconventional as well as boldness in their design that separate them from other manufacturers.
I second that as I bought the same lens and equally very pleased with the performance, build and IQ for the lens' price point.
As an owner of 75mm f4 lens, I am in complete agreement with your comments. Positive experience with that glass peaked my interest in other AstrHori’s products.
I have 50mm f1.4 tilt ..its amasing..
i watched this and thought not to buy, but i asked the company and they said the lense doesn't need to be adjusted for adaping to sony camera. so i bought it, it is very sharp. anyway, it is genuently bad not to spend more time on the lense for them, lica users prabably wouldn't care if its 200% more expensive if it is sharp and can be used right out of the box.
Yeah... Send a product like that, to the man who practically invented the phrase 'no futzing'. Brilliant move....
Crazy, I guess it is like show business, any news is good news!
very interesting, and somewhat perplexing, I have never heard of a company doing exactly what you said that they did here. I wish that I knew more about this company on the one hand, and on the other hand it probably is a waste of time. If anything exceptional from them rolls down the pike I will hear about it anyway. What I did like was the positive, well wishing for this company.
Looks like you were a means to an end. Its better to be known for having problems, than not be known at all. In any case best wished for them to improve the product and lets hope you get a chance to try it :)
As a connoisseur of Budget Gourmet, I'm sure my M8 needs a CLA and having lenses that "need or can" be calibrated is actually a benefit for me. Either that or I'm just that much of a control freak. I have Minolta M-Rokkor 40mm f2 that seems perfectly calibrated to said M8 but have purchased 3 7artisans lenses since. Not only the image quality but being able to calibrate it myself has been the biggest selling point
Thanks for offering an alternative perspective!
TT artesian and 7Artisan does the same thing but out sell
Can’t agree enough with the others about your ever-present professionalism! Your assessment & subsequent review lacks nothing (at least for what you were able to assess), but is concise & even courteous despite the obvious criticism.
I agree: lenses should be squared away before leaving the factory, but this also goes to show that companies shouldn’t try to shave manufacturing costs by using either sub-par bolts or sub-par metals, either of which increase the probability of failure (ESPECIALLY If the end-user is expected to make adjustments themselves…).
Big LOL: Now it's up to the customer to calibrate the lens...
Next thing you know, they will ship the lens as a kit and you will have to follow the instructions in order to assemble it just like a box of Lego.
THAT… is actually a FASCINATING idea. It would automatically mean the people who bought it would WANT to do it; and the manufacturing tolerances would HAVE to be air-tight if it were to succeed!
@@3BMEP OR: Some companies would try their luck and try to impose this as the new normal. Haha
A fantastic idea!
@@anthonyrock5039 it depends for who.
@@MrPsanterIsBack exactly! As an option, this can be very interesting for those interested on that level of hands on experience but not by default as that is not for everyone. There is a general expectation that a lense arrives at your door in a "ready to shoot " condition.
I get sent cheap Chinese electronic products to review all the time. Every once in awhile I wonder if I am unknowingly part of a Chinese spy ring that has installed firmware in my computer and phones.
I have a deal with the companies. If I don't like the product, I will not review it and I send it back. Most of the time products are actually pretty good especially when you consider cost versus quality ratio.
Early on when I started reviewing these knock-off products, the imitation GoPros held their own against the actual GoPro for a fraction of the cost. I would say the highlight of my knockoff review career was when DJI sent me their first DJI action camera. I fly drones and was hoping they'd send me one, but that never happened. I have been sent several projectors which were surprisingly good and relatively expensive for what I usually get offered, but unfortunately, I know my limitations and understand I will never be sent real products by nikon, canon, Panasonic and so on. So for now, I will continue reviewing cheap Chinese products that I do not mind owning. I got a dash cam coming in a couple of days. Good timing because my own dash cam just broke. Yes, it was a Chinese dash cam, but at least it lasted a couple of years.
I'm guessing they were reluctant to send a second lens because they know it wouldn't make a difference. Hopefully they can step up their game but it appears they're not ready to ask for creators to post public content about their products but rather should be soliciting feedback in private and refining their product before bringing it to market.
I'm just not sure where a 40mm f5.6 fits into my Leica lens "collection." And I'm not a super-fast-lens fan; I have several f2.8 lenses that I use a lot. Plus, of coarse, there's no 40mm finder on most Leicas. They could have picked 35mm or 50. Wonder why they didn't.
There's a flood of 50mm and many 35mm out there. Lengths between are much less common although that's closer to a "normal" length if you take the image diagonal.
One viewfinder variant of the Voigtländer Bessa cameras starts with 40mm frames. And I shot a bit with an SLR (yes, not digital) with a 40mm (or 45, not sure) and liked it more than I expected.
Yikes!
They would have lost me at 3..
The person contacting you is paid, or given credit for the job they have done, when you post a video, regardless of content or quality. This is how many of these setups work, often the rep doesn’t even have anything to do with the company, the are the equivalent of a work from home telemarketer.
Oh! Fascinating. How do you know this?
Hello, Hugh Brownstone
I am very sorry to bring you a bad shooting experience
At the same time, thank you very much for your evaluation in the video, which made us realize our own shortcomings.
As a camera lens manufacturer, we will actively listen to the real voices of all parties and adopt professional suggestions. We've taken your suggestion. I decided to tell you that astrhori will decide not to update the m-mount lens for a short time, redesign and make more crazy lenses, in the future, we will invite you to review our camera lenses again to make them meet your satisfaction. I promise that just like this time, we will randomly send one among many packages to ensure fairness. astrhori is very confident in its own image quality, for example, astrhori40mmF5.6 can achieve 44*33 format, which can be transferred to more camera bodies for use.
Team AstrHori
Thank you. I am pleased that you have taken my comments in the spirit they were offered. I look forward to testing a future version of this lens that lives up to your ambitions for it. Bon chance! 👍🏻🖖🏻
@@3BMEP Hugh, once again you impress me with your class!
It's not uncommon for these... 'types' of lenses to require calibration. Heck, most of them include a little screwdriver and a focusing chart to make it possible. What's weird to me is that they expect the end user to do so, but then don't utilize hardware that offers enough robustness to withstand the adjustment process, which would lead one to believe the rest of the construction of the lens is equally bad.
Also... 40mm is such an odd focal length. Not many RF cameras have 40mm framelines, which tells me this was a sort of lazy attempt at a lens. I dunno. It's nice you wish them well, but everything about this just feels uninspired and careless.
One of the Voigtländer Bessa had a viewfinder with 40mm and I think also the CL and/or CLE.
I agree that 40 to 45mm is less common than 35 and 50 but it's much closer to the diagonal of a full frame sensor.
