- The full restoration of the forgotten 1959 Vw Beetle continues! I found this old car sitting in a garage for 30 years back in 2019. It had been saved and stashed away waiting for a full restoration. Larry and I pulled this Volkswagen Beetle from it's soon to be grave, a crumbled tent garage I had it stored it in and Larry brought it home. Follow along on the journey of the restoration videos as this car will be 100 % restored by Larry...edit I have worked on this car haha :)

This man is very good. Can tell this is not his first rodeo. Hope you are paying attention Jason. He’s a great teacher.
Another great episode of "This Old Bug"
I'm loving this series. This guy is a great teacher.
great hear , yes he is , thank you Ken
When someone makes it look easy, you know they are an expert.
very true :)
Enjoying this as my first car was a 1959 and the same color! All I have left is a photo, memories, and one original taillight!
This guy knows his stuff
Love this series
thank you, me too :)
Great time lapse video, some verbal repeats, maybe my poor replay. Thx for bringing us along. Can’t imagine what you promised to get into his shop! Happy Holidays to all!
And people complain about the costs associated with full body restoration, it takes time, a lot of time, keep up the great work
The man is an "artist"!
Wow this guys is really talented.
Great video Jason your on your way to be a professional body man 😊👍 Larry seems to be very knowledgeable and does great work. I used to do a lot of chemical stripping which basically is a powerful paint and body filler remover this avoids removing any metal that grinding discs tend to do this was quite often used on higher end cars and also we would send the stripped all small parts removed body's doors hoods etc. to be dipped in a big chemical vat to remove paint rust does a nice job as well. A little advice on safety glasses Jason they don't work wearing them up on your hat. I can tell you from experience and most of them was from metal grinders used by someone else across the room throwing a peices of steel or stone and getting piece in the eye and going to the ER to get it removed is a pain in the ass so wear your safety glasses Jason.😊
It's going to look really beautiful when it's done.
I still look at it now and it's hard to wrap my brain around it
Larry top drawer ,not only teaching you Jason but all of us watching 👍
Awesome :). Thank you Coco
Larry is awesome! You are soaking in the knowledge!
Larry is a genius
It’s so much fun to watch a master at work!!
Even better in person :)
The knowledge that Larry has on that VW bodywork and the learning you're getting Jason, well that can't be bought with money. Nice!
Yes! having the chance to watch / work / learn with Larry is priceless. He let me weld in and grind some trunk holes that took me all day....he would of been done in 20 minutes. It takes time to teach and I appreciate every minute he spends doing so👍.
Larry got some free labor there!! :))) I am very much enjoying this series. Thank you for presenting it to us.
haha, yes having me doing the work puts us behind 3 days lol. Great to hear, we thank you for the kind words
@@5150mxVW Lol. It looks like you are having AT LEAST as much fun as the rest of us!
Come on Larry metal finish the whole car.....No please dont spend that much time. Looking Great!
Awesome work Larry, great to see you both working away. Larry should have been a shop teacher, super easy to follow and loving the logic he brings to a build. Keep them coming. =)
Such a great project and professionalism towards the repairs.
Keep the videos coming
INteresting ! One day I will also be so lucky as to have a Larry as my neighbor .. .. .. .. ..ha ha ha ha
haha, well he's.a 45 minute ride away but beyond worth it
The Master and his pupil. This project is coming along very well and quite quickly too with some help from Jason. As you say Larry save what you can, so important! Thanks again to Larry for putting up with us nosy folk and thanks Jason for filming and your work Happy New Year to you Larry and the family. 👍👍
Absolutely fascinating watching an artist at work, keep an eye on Jason he needs watching Larry
Perfectionist. ! Great detail & perfect results. 👍🏻
Larry thanks you , much appreciated John
Definitely a labor of love..lots of time and Patience..Thanks for SHARING 👍
love this type of video also. Nice to see a pro take his time to show the correct method to a beginner who wants to learn. Thanks
We thank you Brian...ps , I'm a Novice now haha
Best restoration words ever..."cut it out, make it proper" awesome! Happy New Year fellas!
Awesome too see some more progress on that beauty! Digging the series, Jason
great to hear, we thank you JP
Sheesh, what a hugely-talented guy. Utmost respect for people who can do this kind of thing - especially with such care and attention to detail.
This is progress. I am wondering how long it will take to finish. Love the projection ahead of completion. I like the production values here. This is going to be special.
Hi VC, I think summer it will be done, he could have it done for spring if he really hammered down it. Thank you
flawless hood repair....going to go try this on my 66 beetle!
:) , good luck👍
I respect your detail and quality work
Larry thanks you, new vid from Larry's tomorrow on the 58
The Volkswagen Beetle restoration is coming quite awesome 👌 👏 👍🏿 😍
Love watching these video's with Larry, His work is 100% top notch
I think everyone does stuff differently, but in the end as long as the panels are flat then your good. When I was younger, I was told by older metal workers to skim coat all panels and block sand. Then prime 3 times(wet sanding) then block sand and paint. This way any tiny spots that may break through are covered. But this was 15 years ago. I enjoyed it so much and my specialty was automotive electronics. But who says you can’t learn a few skills. Love watching these videos, jay you will get the hang of it real fast. Nice job all around guys.
We can all learn a ton from this guy!
There is nothing like a DA sander that covers more areas of the surface for a more professional results, instead of a silver dollar small disck , that eats in to the metal , , keep up the great work dudes, !🤨
The skill and seeing each section repaired beautifully is pleasing to watch.
Hell yeah Rad Dude!! Looks just about a similar condition to my 56!! Cant wait to see the progress!!
Jason's "Please sir, I want to be a body man" moment. Good skills being learnt.
😁👍
Looking really great!!
Larry - " Jason, you don't have to go full bore on the sander."
Jay proceeds to sand pedal to metal full send😂🤣
did i? haha! I swear I had some finesse going, maybe that was the next vid lol
@@5150mxVW That thing was screaming lol !
This guy is a scientist
Great video thanks for the update . It’s really looking good!
we thank you Marty
Real Nice Work ! Man anyone hoo buy's a bug from Larry can sleep at night ! This man is a true Artise !!!! And you should pay for his work !!!! O you did a good job To 5150 ! Thanks Straight Ahead ✌😎 PS next Video i will tell you about a 1964 green bug i bought back in 1974 or so ? for $50 You will get a lough !
Very nice ❤
nice job.
Jason if you can video the rust repair on the rear of the hood.
Nice job Larry.
will do👍
great series, maybe you found a niche that showcases others hands on skills, tanks for sharing...
With all the holes he has, I don’t feel so bad about all the holes I get welding
Very nice work. Good to see things being done right. Larry, you are a master and a great patient teacher. Another one being saved right.
Your a lucky man Jason, Larry is a great teacher. Happy new year guys.
Very lucky ! Yes is he is , thank you. Happy New Year
Another awesome video. I am really enjoying this series with Larry. Without mentioning other RUclipsrs, what I find shocking is that this series of videos is not getting more views than others doing VW body work primarily incorrectly. These videos deserve better. Thanks and keep them coming!!!
Again, why watch Bob Ross when you can watch this? Amazing!
😎 thank you
Nice work! Looking forward to seeing more updates!👌😎👍
We ( Larry ) thank you 😁👍, more soon , next vid being edited now
@@5150mxVW awesome!😎👍
Outstanding artistry, Larry.!
Happy New Year! That car is special because I’m a 1959 model!
Happy New Year James
Lovely professional repairs, great to see.
cool
thank you Dan
Love these repair videos your doing. I’m a big bug lover in Oregon
we thank you David
🤔 nice metal work.
Looking good love how it is going.
we thank you Dennis
This is a great collaboration. You are getting some great experience that should be useful when you get to work on some of the old treasure that you have kept. Soon, right?
thank you, yes i am 🙏....yeah well you know I have to " help " Larry finish this restoration first😆😁
Whoops! Accidentally hit the arrow!
Anyway, the progress is exciting! I know the feeling of anticipation when a restoration gets closer to completion. I've been there, even when it's something small. I'm stoked for bud! Can't wait to see that shit eating grin on your face when you're taking that first cruise!
doing great!
thank you Timothy
J I'm curious as to how long this type of restoration takes to complete?
Это очень интересно! Вы молодцы! Круто!
She's coming along nicely. I'm sure Larry explained ( Metal Strech ) to you eh. You can only beat on metal with a body hammer so much or it will start to stretch and cause more problems such as ( Oil Can ) symptoms.
Again really good content and I am learning. Keep up this type of video mixed with your other stuff!
Will Larry keep this beauty when he is done or will he sell it? He will have done so much work to restore this Beetle that I can’t imagine he would sell it.
Hi Deborah, he is keeping this one but he puts the same work into anything he touches
@@5150mxVW Thanks Jason! I cannot wait to see this Beetle when it’s all completed. 😍❤️
Happy New Year, Guys!!! Beautiful work, Larry. It certainly didn't take Jason long to strip like a Pro. You taught him and the rest of us Well! Great camera positioning as usual, Jason. Hope you're giving Larry some pointers in case he wants to dabble in RUclips himself one day. We hope he does. We're all really enjoying this. See ya next time, Thanks!
Go home and tell your wife that Larry taught you how to strip like a pro. Record her reaction
👍
Afternoon mate
Afternoon Mr M
great job //can you show the old gas heater that run in V.W.
Nice work ! No treating the sheet metal ? The safety glasses need to be in front of your eye's ! Thank you !
Show
Jay, does Josh have any interest in this process? Just wondering if he does how much he might absorb for the future🙂. Of course he may be in school during the filming and good ole Dad can impart the wisdom he has learned at a later time. Just a thought.. Take care and thanks for another great video guys. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee.
Hi John, he did some welding years ago and used to be all about yard work and wrenches ...not these days. I did recently add something new to the herd that may stimulate some Father and Son wrenching in the garage
@@5150mxVW So, as long as you continue to be a part of his life and he knows how much you love him. That's what really matters. He's a great kid and you are a great dad from what i have seen Jay.
Essa solda mig solta muito bom é o macarico acetileno e axigeneo muito mais resistente
Good.jop 😃😃😃cool
Igual maçarico acetileno e axigeneo não tem e o melhor a muito anos sem dúvida. Mig também usa gaz solda fraca
How many hours has he put in on this?
at this point I think i've still pushed it around longer than he's had his hands on it :)
I couldn`t remember half of what that guy knows.
Hey Jason can I ask a question? Larry is going to great lengths to weld up every single tiny hole on the edge of the bonnet there. Could they not be filled with a tiny spec of filler? What's the advantage of welding even tiny, tiny holes? Thanks, from the UK. x
those tiny holes can trap the smallest amount of moisture and come back to surface later...that filler will rise up through the paint
Jason, great addition to the series. I was wondering if you or Larry would be so kind to tell us the exact areas that will be sand blasted. From the video it appeared that Larry doesn’t have the lower quarters sand blasted. Are there other areas that he doesn’t sand blast? Can I assume he has the the wheel wells, engine compartment, and areas under the hood sand blasted? What about the fenders, hood, deck lid, and doors? Thanks!
Hi Jeff, I will be filming the sand blasting ...I know we stripped the doors and rear quarters by hand because he did not want them sandblasted to avoid the chance of warpage. There are few questionable spotty / rust areas the size of a quarter he may have hit with the media blast. Than you Jeff
@@5150mxVW Thanks Jason! Looking forward to seeing the results
What magnet light is that? I need one so I can see what I’m welding.
harb frt
Jason
Could you explain why it’s called a 4 tab hood? I never had a bug that old and I don’t understand that thanks
Hi, the VW emblem has 4 prongs and not 3 like the later one, It's also flatter. There are some other structural differences with the early hoods vs late 60's as well. Don't forget the crest above the handle on the early hoods also.
Well my 59 isn't a Rag top it's a deluxe hard top,,so basically no frills.. only 4 fuses total...It was in much worse shape than your car but two years later it's getting close to paint... ever thing was broken missing or siezed...I have not bought any body panels what so ever...all hand formed by me with basically hammer and dolly and sandbag.. Soon
CAN YOU ADD THE MICE , PISS SO i KNOW THIS IS YOU ?
:), not in Larry's shop !
How can anyone pay to have a VW restored. I am a California VW guy don’t see how you could ever get your money back on a restored VW.
This is going to be one of Larry's personal cars. Go on bring a trailer and see what people are paying for Vw's. Worse is when I see Ghia vert's bringing over 50k on there with a 1/2 " of filler above the headlight bezel ....I've seen multiple bondo bucket " 80K " restorations sell on that site... :(
Love this series
We thank you Chris
